SGOTM 01 - V Q

One More Thing(tm):

If we pass Gandhi in score, he won't PA with us. Keep that in mind.

We're real close right now in score... Gonna be hard to finish/prolong the war with Sala without passing Ghandi.

We're going to take cities and that improves our score. Perhaps gift a city or two to Ghandi?

Yes on the UN, the candidates are always the owner of the UN city, and the highest population civ. OF course if the highest pop civ is the UN owner, it goes to #2 pop civ.

Looks like right now, we'd have enough population with Gandhi voting for us (we only need 60%, correct?) Whereas we are probably 10% short on land area. A couple more of Saladin's cities should do the trick...

To get the UN, Mass Media would require the following techs:
Sci Method (7turns) - Physics (16) - Electricity (18) - Radio (23) - Mass Media (14) = 78 turns at the current research rate. It would be 54 turns at 100% research the entire time. I realize this number may go down, but I would still bet a minimum of 50 turns...

I still wonder if we would be able to get the DP sooner than that?

If we did go the UN route.... so here's a CRAZY thought... not wiping out Saladin...

Build UN in Medina, as planned.

Gift Medina back to Saladin and then go for the UN victory! :lol:

Lurker comment: I know that having a higher score doesn't preclude a PA. I've played with the option a bunch of times and have always had a higher score. I seem to recall forming a PA with a #2 once. Every other time, the PA partner was #3 or below. It may be the case that there is always so much competition with #2 that it reduces the relationship score/index.

:cry: My/Our CRIII macemen :cry:

Why axe the workers? We have a lot of railing to come up... Guess we will have to make due... Oh and we will probably catch some more workers, so OK then...

Will gandhi go for PA with him beeing score leader??

Now here is a crazy thought... We stop all research after rails and go all out military, maybe even try to fight 2 wars? Cyrus and FDR? I bet we get a quicker win than 78 turns... What techs do we want/need after rail? Tech that would make killing everyone easier that is?
Communism maybe? For State Property... Less maintenance make for more war money... but we need 4 techs to get to Communism....

Assembly Line is 11200 beakers and Rail is 10000 and some change. Thats quite a few Mace=>Granadier upgrades :) How about we stop research now
I say we go the *Fox03* way, build CR2 (or even CR3) macemen and upgrade them to Grenadiers. Allong with Cannons and some Caveliers, there should be no stopping us :)

Edit: That is untill some AI (other than Baldy) gets Assembly line, then we are toast :(

Frankly, I prefer to depend on myselves rather than rely on some iffy assumptions on AI's algorithms. So I definitely would choose to conquer my way to victory.

Whether or not we go the 0%research route to fund our CRIII grenies depends on how fast FDR is researching. We need to figure that out first. Impression is that FDR seems to be researching at quite a frantic pace, only slightly slower than Gandhi. So, the CRIII grenies route may not be viable.

Don't forget thus far we have been fighting weaker opponents (apart from Cathy). When we face FDR+Cyrus, it will be an entirely different story. We need ample defence in HC-land (remmeber the stack there), and we need ample defence in our original cities (They are pathetic at the moment).

So we have to brush up our defenses first. That will cost us a few turns, and by that time FDR may have AssLine.

Agreed. That was part of my reasoning for considering milking the war with Saladin. It may be rough trying to keep the war around for 50+ years, but the payoff may be immense.

Emancipation and WW will continue to slowly cripple our cities. I know we want to go the military route, but if we can convert those techs into constitiution and democracy/liberalism.... much happier our people will be.

You know, Team One has already passed us in score (still 60 turns behind) and may even finish the SGOTM before us ... yeah, we could conquer our way to victory like they're probably doing, but I thought we were trying to have some fun here? I think it'd be a lot more fun to build UN and gift it to FDR or Sally than it would be to just run rampant over the globe...or try to get a PA that gives us an instant win.

Just a thought.

And fighting our way to victory is not fun???? :confused:

Anyway, obligatory notice:

I would be out of pocket from 4th to 10th June (SGT = GMT+8). Though I will still have internet access and may be able to play at night, but don't wait for me to post a got-it. Whenever the next player can play, simply grab it, unless I have already posted a got it.

I am good with any victory we get, I would like to try getting a PA tho... If only because thats the way it was setup, tho it might have been much better to get the PA somewhere in the first 4000 years ;)

Anyhooo.... Like I said, any way we can. I am up for a retry of this SG if that is still on... Would like to try it without the Pyramids or something...

I downed the save and the Mace=> Granie upgrade is no longer an option as appearently rifflemen replace them... So thats one less option to consider...

:yup: :) :yup:

I think I haven't stated my congratulations on the "gifting the UN"-idea yet. So ... Congratulations! And maybe even letting Sally survive, gifting it to him and building up population instead ... that's really ... I'll call it 'phunky'. I really dig that. :thumbsup:

Since we're going to be done so much sooner than the rest of the teams, I think we should ask AlanH if we can do a "does not count towards the Golden Laurels" second go-round. I'd be interested to see what that variant rule does to the results of the game.

Obviously voluntary, and dot you're welcome to join us if we do it :D

If I am welcome by the other team-members ... I'd be gladly joining you in the re-play :D

I know why the mods have set "finish first" as the victory condition: if you win via PA, you don't get your ally's score. It's still just your score times the amount of time remaining. Therefore winning domination via PA would be a lower score than if you won via pure conquest.

Obviously I didn't get the report in last night. Another one of my unkept promises. :blush:

Anyways... we're at war with Saladin... and our point is to beat him down, and maybe leave him with one city... if we don't completely wipe him out.

I'll do my best!

Turn 1: Forces look like they're in good position at Basra so...

basra0xv.jpg

I keep it of course.

Hmm... Mecca doesn't look too bad either...

mecca6hj.jpg

Whew... two cities, one turn. Obviously I was set up very nice (thx bobrath!)

Turn 2: Ok, WW is starting to really hurt... up to 10 in some cities. Hmm... we're not in Police State... and that has to change! I revolt right away.

(Also note, we are seeing the Emancipation penalty showng up... not enough to really hurt yet, but we may want to try to figure out a way to get Democracy...)

Turn 5: My one big :smoke: of the turnset, I sent a cav out of Basra to take out a Camel archer that was coming to pillage. Oopsie, I guess Basra was left too lightly defended and Saladin took it back (used 3 camels) I usually don't let that happen! :cry:

Not to fear, Basra is once again ours next turn.

Turn 7: I have Damascus right where I want it:

damascus7ck.jpg

This leaves Saladin with (I think) two cities left. There is a small force doen by Kufah, but not enough to take the city. Saladin has rifles, and they we need our big guns (Highly promoted Cavs) which are still up at Damascus.

FDR plopped Miami down just west of one of the cities we took from Saladin. I've built a couple cultural buildings in our city, and Miami will flip fast... it's already down near 0%.

And the save: Save

2 Questions, one for Maquis and one for the group: Is Gandhi still at war with Sally, and should I eliminate him (er, Sally)?

I'll be playing in about 10 hours.

A couple more notes: after Steam Power, I chose Sc Method, which is next in the Mass Media beeline.

We popped another Engineer in Thebes, and I left him active there. He can teach us most of Railroad... or we could find another use for him.

BIG NOTE: Gandhi built the Eiffel Tower!! That means he has Radio... not sure if he would be researching Mass Media or not...

I don't think he will build the UN, but if he did it just might screw up our plan to build & gift.

Just a roster check:

Maquis == Just played
ChrTh == UP!
GreyFox == Possible skip till 6/10 ?
Eektor == maybe on deck?
namlaiM ==
bobrath ==

Is Gandhi still at war with Sally,

Yes, Gandhi is still at war with Sally. In fact he was bombarginf Kufah with his Frigates... so there's a *hint* of some offensive movement.

As for eliminating Sally, I still am on the fence. If we knew better that the PA would kick in, I would say leave Sally alive. I still just wonder if we're better off just continuing to mow people down and go for our own Domination/Diplomacy, without waiting for the PA.
