SGOTM 02 - Geezers

Sorry if I am intruding, but I have followed your threads from the beginning. If you are indeed looking for a new player I would enjoy playing for the geezers.
Dagnabit-

No objections from me although the rest of the team will need to give their views. Since you've been following the threads I think we can take it that you understand the commitment that is involved.

souds good to me, I'm all for it.

Also, DynamicSpirit says he most likely would like to join us for the next game, is that fine with you guys?

Fine by me. Fortunate as he's posted in the signup thread saying he would like to join us.

No objection from my side. Both are very welcome to join the Geezers for the next one.:old:

I think we need to discuss a little more next game. We were a little too silent in SGOTM2. In SGOTM1 we had much more talk which was good. Have to blame myself being engaged in 4 time consuming SGs which was a little hard for me to handle.:mischief:

and I had a ton of rl stuff pop up suddenly a lot. That shouldn't happen as much this time around...plus, I'm much better at the builder aspects of the game than the military.

Agreed. One way or another we were probably all guilty at some point of not offering our ideas and suggestions.

From what I can gather from the signup thread our discussion thread for the next game should open in the next week or so. Once they open there are a number of subjects we will need to discuss. Off the top of my head these are ones that spring to mind:

  1. Where do we settle our first city?
  2. Which type of victory are we aiming for and what would be the best way to achieve it?
  3. Closely allied to the above two points what should our first few tech researches be?
  4. What should our first few builds be?

I realise that some of the above will depend on what the layout of the map is and whether we have any close neighbours and who they are. However if we can get a feel for what the likely answers to the above are then we should be more prepared. I'm sure that the above questions are not exhaustive.

EDIT: Can I remind our new team members to NOT post your thoughts on these questions until our SGOTM03 thread opens.

Looks like I'm in Geezers for SGOTM03 - so - hello everyone!

(And thanks to Thrallia for inviting me. And then persisting when I turned down his invite to SGOTM02 :mischief: )

Thanks for letting me join the Geezers. Excited but apprehensive. Unless it is unexpected I shouldn't have any RL interuptions with the exception of 3 day trip over Christmas. Looking forward to becoming a sponge- and adding my own (currently) 1/2 cent worth.

Dagnabit-

well, technically I asked DynamicSpirit if he wanted to do an SGOTM with me, then I asked the geezers if they wanted us :) since he decided not to then, I asked him again ;)

either way, welcome to both our new members :)

Welcome DynamicSpirit (I think we're going to have to shorten that to Dynamic or perhaps DS :) ) and Dagnabit. Here's hoping we all have an enjoyable SGOTM.

Indeed. At the time I was worried about the time commitment. But now Thrallia has experience of SGOTMs and I have his word of honour that the only commitment involved is 3 minutes on the 2nd of every month eating chocolate icecream with the other team members, I think I have time for that :mischief:

I don't think referring to me as 'Dynamic' is a good idea as there's someone with that name in one of the other teams. I could accept DS I guess (the trick will be to try and use the initials in a context where it looks like it could be a unit or building from the game, and get readers scratching their heads over which unit it could be  ). I answer to 'Simon' as well (my real-life name).

And ta for the welcome, nice to 'meet' you!

mmm...ice cream sounds good. its a good thing I'm cooking food right now, or I'd be annoyed that you made me hungry :p

Trying to get up to speed on some of the administrative stuff in the game so I can try and coherently express and post thoughts during the game. I personally got a lot of information when I saw threads with screenshots and descriptions of the gameplay that discussed thought processes and tactics. a couple of questions:

1st-Markh-In post #8 of this thread you said you left the"editor" running in the background and posted your thoughts to it as they came up. Is the editor the HOF Mod Autolog or something else?

2nd- I read, when someone writes or draws arrows etc on schreenshots they did this was in an external draw/paint program and then uploaded the new pic to the thread. Does anyone have any suggestions on what you use ( if anything) and whether you find it helpful in discussions.

I suspect this is probably just notepad. I actually find problems switching to another program as Civ minimises and doesn't want to maximise again. So I just write my notes on a pad of paper.

I use MS Paint. Another good thing is to try to reduce the width of your image so that it is not necessary for everyone to scroll to and forth across the page.As a personal preference I'm not a great fan of attachments as they appear at the end of the post rather than inline with the turn details. You may want to consider setting up a free account with Photobucket or Imageshack to hold your images.

You may also find it helpful to browse the forum codes so that you can embolden words or phrases etc.

Just thought I would mention that you can make attachments appear inside posts by using the [ attach ] [ /attach ] tags

Thanks for that Gyathaar. Looks like I need to have a refresher course on the forum codes as well. :D

You can solve that by turning off the full screen option in the Civ options. Then Civ runs in Windows mode and minimizes and maximizes as you wish. That's how I always run it, so I can swap between Civ and other applications. (Though there are a couple of other bugs in Windows mode you have to watch out out for)

Actually I do not know what it is in the English version of windows. I have the German one, but I think it is notepad in the English version. I just start this first and then CIV. Then you toggle between the programs by using alt+tab. I never had any problems switching between the programs and I can note down everything and just copy and paste into my reply in the thread after I played my set.

Attached is a pic showing what the editor in the German version is.

yeah, that's notepad.

Now that we'll have the HOF mod for use in the game, you can turn on autolog and just hit alt+e and type in your comments as you go through your turns. It creates its own text file that you can then open and copy/paste into your posted summary. Then you don't need to deal with pen and paper, or with notepad.
