SGOTM 02 - Geezers

oy, I appear to be triple posting now lol

Looks like CFR popped Mining from a hut, there's no doubt that only helped them beat everyone by even more than they would have.

Sorry I'm late to the party, guys. Congratulations on winning :goodjob:

Sign-up thread for SGOTM3 is up!

Looks like it will have plenty of combat, but we're supposed to win diplomatically or via space race.

Agreed. I had a quick glance at our early moves and I don't recall us popping a hut at all. OTOH judging my FUBAR's experience perhaps that's a good thing.

Hey, CFR may be splitting...that might mean everyone either has a better chance or a worse chance. lol depends on whether that weakens them or creates two equally strong teams

It probably just means that there'll be a CFR competitor in both competitions. Whether either team or the original team are better at diplo / space victory than the other teams is something that's yet to be determined.

True, we haven't seen whether they are as good at diplo or space as they are at killing things.

btw, klarius is leaving us, so it looks like the three of us may pick up quite a few randoms

Just saw your last post in the sign up thread, Thrallia, so we are set for a Vanilla game I think.

For this particular SG I think that's a good idea. I've actually now bought & received Warlords but it's going to take me a while to appreciate and learn how to make best use of all the differences.

Apart from anything else the Warlords teams can do all the groundwork for us in terms of strategies. I suspect their SG will be harder than ours with the AI being better at growing their economies. Having said that I'm sure there'll be a warlords team that comfortably beats our finish time. ;)

yeah...the AI is crazy hard in the new warlords patch...I just played WOTM3, and got my butt whooped by the AI. Not only did they severely outtech me, but they actually used suicide cats and trebs against me when I had attained what was a pretty large garrison in my capital. So rather than possibly surviving as a one city civ for awhile, they used 5 suicide cats and trebs, then sent in their knights and musketeers. It was pretty scary seeing the AI war that much like a human.

Knowing that, and knowing we'll have 17 AI against us on aggressive settings...I decided I think I prefer the stupid AIs to the vassals and other stuff I like about warlords....at least for right now.

Just be glad we're not playing against the latest version of Blake's AI. :) From what I can gather it appears that some of Blake's original changes were not implemented by Firaxis for balance reasons. However since then Blake has been making additional changes and is now looking at improving how the AI make war.

Of course the issue of AI bonuses is now becoming an issue. But I think that's a topic for elsewhere. ;)

yeah...the AI included in the patch is slightly better at war, it won't be lured out of cities as easily, and it uses seige units smarter, but overall it is still fairly stupid.

I personally think Firaxis should have taken Blake's entire AI, removed the AI bonuses, and then set up a scaled version of the AI for each difficulty level.

or at least tried to scale the AI and lower the difficulty bonuses. It seems to be the consensus from me and another WOTM3 player that the 2.08 AI on monarch makes the game more difficult than vanilla emperor, and possibly as hard as vanilla immortal. I personally won the immortal GOTM, but I got schooled in every aspect of the game against 2.08 monarch.(although, that may not be saying much considering I also managed to get creamed horribly by the raging barbs of warlords 2.00 in the second WOTM)

Alan stated in the Gipsy Kings thread that thus far only 13 of 22 teams have submitted victorious games so far

Update on the other teams:
CDZ-1830AD and 6 AI left: we should beat them

Real Ms. Beyond-1730AD and all 7 AI left(only Izzy even attacked so far): we should beat them also

Smurkz-1616AD and 3 AI left: they'll probably beat us, but not by a lot, the civs left are big and have a tech lead on them

Chokonuts-1860AD and 3 AI left: we'll beat them, AI tech lead and all are huge still

Short Straw- finished in 1622AD.

Memphis Blues- finished in 1709AD.

Fistful of Dynamite- finished in 1827AD

Gipsy Kings- finished in 1921AD

XTeam- finished in 2005AD

Team One- finished in 1574AD

VQ Red- finished a space race, thus kinda DQ's

Rat pack- finished in 1790AD

Isamu- not finished yet in 1930AD, at least two AI left

Peanut- 1532AD, two AI left but neither have more than 5 cities

Chaos- retired in 1691AD

VQ Black- finished in 1851AD

Pioneer Knights- finished in 1836AD

Murky Waters- finished in 1994AD

Fifth Element- finished in 1837AD

CFR- finished in 1202AD!!!

FUBAR- retired at some point, I think around 1100AD

Geezers- finished in 1914AD

It looks like 10 teams have beat us this time around, and I expect Smurkz to beat us...we should finish 12th place then, although I could be surprised by CDZ, Chokonuts, or Real Ms. Beyond.

*sigh* quadruple post...do we want to try to recruit any of the unsigned vanilla players? I've extended an offer to DynamicSpirit, but I forgot to mention we're playing vanilla to him, nor do I know if he'll play or not.

Posting to make sure you don't get to 5 posts. Perhaps Dagnabit? Or we could just for Alan's assignments?

he sounds good, he's a vanilla guy and he fits the geezers spirit better than me ;)

I'm gonna be letting DynamicSpirit know we are playing vanilla, if we get dagnabbit and him, we'll have 5 players, which in my opinion reduces the likelihood of getting more than a player or two that ends up disappearing.

*restarts his bid for 5 straight posts*

looks like klarius is joining Team Peanut...civ_steve posted in their thread that he invited him and that klarius accepted.

Well the Geezers name was a bit tongue in cheek. :) I think AlanH summed it up quite well when he said it was all about the team gelling together and doing better than any single invidual member could manage.

Yes I noticed that. Best of luck to him.

Sorry if I am intruding, but I have followed your threads from the beginning. If you are indeed looking for a new player I would enjoy playing for the geezers. Just got hooked on this game in June and am playing because it is "fun". Getting better but I don't have any expectations of stardom. I am a geezer at heart (a year shy of the big 60!), a retired US Navy pilot, and I play with model trains. If that isn't a telling resume' I quess I will add that I have a small tractor and in the short Maine summers I dig in the dirt looking for rocks to put in a pile! Thanks for letting me intrude.

Dagnabit-
