SGOTM 05 - Mac Team

Well, we haven't made it to 1085 AD yet, so don't give up hope!

Looking at their score, they seemed to be doing pretty well---they had twice our score at the same point in the game. I wonder what happened.

Back to our game. I see we got HBR. Did we research that ourselves? Once calendar comes in, I think we need construction next. We need cats/swords/axes in addition to Keshiks (which we also need!).

When we go after Saladin, I think we should pillage his copper on our island, but other than that we should ignore those cities and go after his core cities immediately. This will require building a big attack force and a bunch of galleys, of course. Our goal there will be to pillage and raze his core cities. Later we can resettle that land---no one else will be able to get there for a long time.

I'm having a busy Saturday, but I'll try to go over and forward play some time this weekend.

Priorities include settling the seafood city to the northeast (any particular spot in mind, people?) and continuing the military buildup in order to make some kind of move. We don't have a sufficient base to turtle up, so we need to expand, quickly--and hopefully at someone else's expense.

Actually, I take back my advice. When we go after Sal, we shouldn't pillage the copper on our island; he has another source anyway. We should take that city, but leave the other two alone. The copper city will make a good production source.

Simultaneous with our assault on copper city (using swords, axes, cats), we should land four or five galleys worth of pillaging forces: axes/Keshik pairs. These can pillage while we assemble the rest of our forces and land en masse for an assault on his core cities.

Finished my turn set. The highlights:

In 980, Isabella demanded that we convert to Judaism. Feeling no deep attachment to our current non-religion religion, I complied. Given the number of nations of that faith, it seemed the prudent thing to do in the short term.

In 1025, I refused an open borders agreement with Saladin.

I was tempted to declare war on Saladin, but a fourth defender appeared in our first target city, so I wanted to get two more units to the front and then attack. If everyone else deems it prudent, the war to retake the home island may begin in the next turn set.

I've looked at the save, I'll play tonight. Since they are defending with axes, swordsmen aren't really going to work that well. I'll start cranking out our own axes, but I don't think that I will have enough stuff to attack with during my turn.

As I remember there are 2 axes, a spear and a chariot. Keshiks would be going up against the spear, and once that was hurt enough they would go against the axes. Our axes will start with C1, so they can promote to Shock or CR1. The Keshiks would only be able to go with C1 or Flanking, and since they cost quite a bit more axes are the way to go.

I too think it is premature to go to war. After all, last time Saladin dropped two galleys full of attackers. What would we do if three galleys of axes showed up by Beshbalik? I think we need more galleys for defense before we attack.

What's our goal in going to war right now? To retake the cities on our island and stop? Or ... ?

How about a different plan. Open borders with Saladin, land a couple chariots and scout out his cities. We need to know what we are up against, imo. I don't see how Saladin can take advantage of OB with us.

If we need more cities we could found an iron/rice city.

Beshbalik should be working the stone---forget about trying to grow that city, until CS at least. That increases the production from 5 hpt to 8 hpt.

I don't think that Sal has metal except at the city that he stole from us. I don't think we saw anything but chariots until he had that city. If we can figure out that he doesn't have any metal then I definitely think it is worth denying him the copper that should be ours anyway.

I don't think that's true; if I recall correctly (can't check right now) there's some visible in the SW part of his territory. And I'm pretty sure he landed axes when it was Peter's turn. I'm sure Peter will remember :-).

Sal does have iron on his island. He also has two galleys in Kufah. I built Axes since they are good to have anyway, and it is what we would need to attack Kufah with. I started a Library in Seafood City since we can't make anything else to pop the borders with. I've let Karakoram grow because it has some good tiles that we can work. We're trading bananas to Sal for 2 gold, since we don't need the health at the moment. I put a spearman on our Iron since it is so crucial and far away.

I'm next, right? I'm going to want some feedback before I play.

Saladin also has copper down by Medina.

There's a riverside forest that can be chopped at Karakorum. Could make a galley out of that. I still think we need more galleys.

We are six turns from construction. Saladin does not have construction yet. I would like cats before we go to war.

I still like the idea of OB with Saladin to scout out his territory. If we OB'd right now we could have a Keshik on his island in seven turns by my count. Then by the end of my turnset we would know where his cities were and how well they are defended. It also might draw his galleys and some troops away as he goes exploring.

If we did that my plan would be to build more galleys and troops during my turnset, but not start a war just yet. We can close borders in 10 turns if we want.

I can't open the save here at work, but Dr_S's outline looked good to me.

If we can get Construction, we should refrain from trading it around - someone could trade it to Saladin before we attack. However, if we can get something great, like Civil Service, then maybe it's worth it :dunno:

Saladin doesn't know anybody except us, so he can't get anything in trade. My reading of the border situation is that he won't be able to meet anyone else with galleys even if we OB with him.

In that case, let's get as much as we can for it. See who wants it, what they have to offer, and sell it to absolutely everyone (except Saladin ;))

I do think that we should open borders with Sal. Then we could move the one galley that we have into where it would do us some good. We could also get a pillaging stack loaded and ready to drop off. Once the war starts the galleys could drop off the pillaging stack and then guard the approach.

Played my turnset. Save here.

Opened borders with Saladin. Sent a Keshik and archer (closest unit) down there. Made a screenshot of what awaits us in Mecca: Axe, Chariot x4, Spearman x4, Archer x4, Galley. You can't see it in the screenshot, but there's an unowned tile to the east of Mecca where we can put the Keshik and archer before we close borders and/or declare war. That way they'll already be there for raiding. There may also be open tiles to the southwest of Mecca, I haven't been there yet. That may be a better launch pad because it's closer to Sals iron/copper.

Finished Construction, researched Currency, started Code of Laws (9 turns left).

Chopped/whipped two galleys in Karakorum. Fourth galley has two turns left. As far as I can see, Saladin has only three galleys (none moved this turnset!), so we're getting into position to control the seas. Obviously, if we declare war, he'll try to move a stack from Mecca to our island, so we should be sure to have enough galleys to kill it. I recommend at least six, since we'll eventually want some offensive ones as well.

Note that Toku has founded a city on the east coast of the island to our west. Once it pops its border, we'll be able to attack it, if we choose. Of course, he'll be able to come after us then. This makes me think we should concentrate our war against Sal on our island, and control it, so that we'll be ready for Toku when the time comes. That means enough galleys to prevent more landings, and enough troops to take Sals three cities.

Library in fish city not yet ready to be whipped, but of course that should be done asap. I didn't build any cats; those should probably go into the queue at Beshbalik when the current build (a Keshik) finishes. I would build at least one more galley in Karakorum. (Maybe build a cat first, then whip the galley when the current whip unhappiness wears off.)

Barbs razed Calcutta on the main island.

edits: Apparently, rumors of One Short Straw's demise were greatly exaggerated. We're still leading the race for the coveted wooden spoon.

On war prep, if there are indeed free tiles on Saladin's island, we should land a bunch of raiding parties before we go to war. Three sets of Keshik/axes would be good, including the Keshik that is already down there. The archer could be retrieved. Keshiks are much better than chariots for pillaging, because they can always move 2 independent of terrain, so they can always pillage every turn.

okay, so it looks like my set will consist of producing

a) Galley in Karakorum, then Cat, the galleys
