SGOTM 05 - Trash Team

Sorry for not appearing last night, I nodded off. (Fortunately not on the keyboard.)

Despite me being teaserish yesterday, this round saw no action. Lots of preparing and head-scratching though.

Our barbaric friends proved useful, as they gave us divine right and banking for free. I switched to mercantilism, since we didn't have OB with anyone. It took two turns of anarchy and I had some fun correcting the stupid AI specialist assignments. the barbs are now researching steel alongside us, ETA nine turns.

Mecca trained a settler and I left him sleeping there, since I didn't recall us having a plan for him.

War preparations

Civ4ScreenShot0001-3.jpg

As you can see, our continental holdings are busy building troops. The Old World is locked on infra, though I had Mecca and New Sarai building caravels in case Toku brings some Galleons around.

The Greek-Japan war is turning out to Toku's favor. You can see Arbela and Argos in the west, framed in red. The brunt of Japanese forces seems to be engaged there. We've got to attack, before Alex runs out of steam and begs for peace. Known Japanese SoDs are marked with black dots.

Our main stack, marked in red, is in Madrid, ready to go. There are two grenadiers on a forested hill north of the city. The blue dot represents three grenadiers and four catapults in Samaria, poised to capture Delhi.

Our north is scantly defended. Make no mistake, if Toku decides to move quickly on Persepolis, we will lose the city. The situation is improving, though. And the visuals we have of his cities confirm that he doesn't have any decent forces in the north, so we should be pretty safe.

I suggest that our main stack attacks Edo first and then marches to Kyoto. We have LoS to Toku's northern cities and can committ reserves according to troop movements there. Whereas we know nothing of the south. the sooner we strike there, the less chance of a surprise flank attack.

Civ4ScreenShot0003-2.jpg

That's a good deal to make before DoWing him. PP won't do him much good and that's almost all of his money. That would enable a bunch of upgrades for us.

So, make the deal, check if upgrades are necessary, check troop positions and tip this game over to the winning side. And hope that once we DoW Toku,
Alex agrees to OB so that these poor saps can come home.

Civ4ScreenShot0004-2.jpg

The obligatory power curve and the SAVE.

Civ4ScreenShot0002-2.jpg

OK - got it ... happy to receive any last minute instructions. I intend to play in about 12 hours.

kill toku!

That sums it up pretty well. :hammer:

Remember to keep an eye out for troop movements in former Persia. I recommend chopping all the forests around Persepolis to raise a grenadier garrison. Toku has a combat IV/commando grenadier. That bugger could cause some major headaches.

Some of our workers are running out of jobs, so bring a couple along as combat engineers. This is going to be a tough scrap, so having reinforcements arrive three times faster to the front will come in handy. Also, once you capture Delhi, it might be worthwhile to build a diagonal road from Toledo to Madrid so that Toledo can supply both fronts.

In summary: War with Japan. Peace between Japan and Greece. We build one new city, raze one city, and capture and hold six. Japan is weaker, but still quite an adversary.

Opening turn:

Sold off Printing Press for 1160:gold: to Tokugawa and 430:gold: to Qin.
Some upgrades to City Raider Grenadiers.

1742AD

Ning-Hsia: Forge (whip) > Grenadier
New Sarai: Forge > Grenadier
Bactra: Catapult > Grenadier

sgotm5_1730_declare_toku.jpg

Follow Stuge’s instructions as per assaults on Edo and Delhi ...

... on the suggestion to take Kyoto ... I was concerned that our SoD might be decimated by Cannons before we took Kyoto - sorry if this decision is unpopular and that I didn't consult further, but I believe we were undergunned for a drive at taking the military leader’s capital.

... on the suggestion of Persepolis ... Tokugawa kept sending Grenadiers up towards Persia, so I sent threatened Workers to the east rather than risking them with Forest chops.

We destroy a lone Cannon headed for Greece’s Mycenae and question whether we should have let Tokugawa take it and later capture it. :undecide:

IBT: Tokugawa captures a Worker south of Pasargadae. We fend off an attack at Samaria.

1744AD

Turfan: Grocer > Grenadier
Mecca: Caravel > Grenadier
Toledo: Grenadier > Grenadier
Bactra: Grenadier (whip) > Grenadier
Persepolis: Barracks > Grenadier
Madrid: Catapult > Lighthouse

Lose a 65% Grenadier vs. Grenadier battle south of Nagasaki without laying a scratch on the Japanese unit. Tokugawa has a small but lethal SoD south of Pasargadae.

The war with Tokugawa pleased Alexander, who is now ‘Friendly’. We ‘Open Borders’.

1746AD

Pasargadae: Grenadier (whip) > Grenadier
Samaria: Theatre > Barracks
Persepolis: Grenadier (whip) > Grenadier

Just in terms of visible units, Tokugawa has at least 15 Cannons and 8 Grenadiers – although no sign of any naval force.

Drop to 30%:science: - Steel in 7.

Edo and Delhi both taken. Hanging Gardens - nice. :)

IBT: Tokugawa begins hitting our cities, but aside from a lost Grenadier in Edo, we hold. Tokugawa takes Mycenae from Alexander.

1748AD

Old Sarai: Caravel > Grenadier
Murcia: Grenadier > Grenadier
Toledo: Grenadier > Grenadier
Valencia: Library > Grenadier
Bactra: Grenadier > Grenadier

The Kahn takes Mycenae from Tokugawa and chooses not to return the city to the Greeks. Dilemma from earlier is resolved.

To the far north, Nagasaki is captured and razed – no resources and few land tiles not already in Mongolian borders.

The city of Tabriz is founded to the west of Mecca after Workers had cleared away the Forest. It’s got Copper and Cows, and a few Grassland tiles. It begins work on a Courthouse.

1750AD

Barcelona: Grenadier > Bank
Pamplona: Grenadier > Grenadier
Delhi: Granary

Alexander: Printing Press + Chemistry <> Astronomy + Nationalism

Nationhood is now an option although with three turns of Anarchy, I decide against.

Karakorum: Grocer > Observatory
Barcelona: (Interrupt) > Observatory
Ning-Hsia: (Interrupt) > Observatory
Tufan: (Interrupt) > Observatory
Mecca: (Interrupt) > Observatory

IBT: Edo comes under Japanese fire, but again the city holds firm.

1752AD

Toledo: Grenadier > Grenadier

Vitoria is taken. A resourceless city; it is considered for razing, however it is a riverside city and yet despite some overlap it does cover several tiles outside existing borders. It is kept.

Cordoba is captured.

Lose a 99% battle of a Knight trying to take out a lone and injured Cannon. Unfortunately that Cannon not only survives, but delivers collateral damage to units in Cordoba the next turn.

Excuse me for a second ... :badcomp: ...

With two cities recently captured, increase to 50%:science:. Steel in two.

IBT: Cordoba gets hit hard by Japan with both collateral and direct damage. Several Grenadiers fall leaving Catapults to defend. The Kahn becomes concerned that Edo and Cordoba might be hard to hold.

1754AD

Persepolis: Grocer > Observatory
Murcia: Grenadier (whip) > Grenadier

Several ‘low experience’ Catapults try to weaken the Japanese stack on the outskirts of Cordoba, but none retreat and little damage is delivered.

IBT: Cordoba again comes under fire. A Combat II Knight falls. The weakling Alexander of Greece signs a peace deal with our enemy. His attitude falls back to ‘Pleased’.

1756AD

Steel > Military Tradition.

Drop to 20%:science: to put our cash flow back in the positive.

Persepolis: Grenadier > Cannon
Madrid: Lighthouse > Barracks

A Japanese Grenadier and Cannon are picked off in the open, although lost a 68%er.

Tokugawa has 1280:gold: in the Bank.

Upgrade a couple of Catapults to Cannons in Edo.

1758AD

Old Sarai: Grenadier (whip) > Theatre
Barcelona: Bank (whip) > Grenadier
Toledo: Grenadier > Cannon
New Sarai: Grenadier > Cannon
Samaria: Barracks > Grenadier
Delhi: Granary > Theatre
Mycenae: Granary

Santiago is captured.

1760AD

Old Sarai: Theatre > Cannon
Pamplona: Grenadier
Vitoria: Granary

We spot the first signs of any Japanese navy – a Frigate moves towards Madrid and threatens the Fishing Boats.

Tokugawa’s Tarsus is ‘gettable’ next turn with a small but compelling enough SoD – although he has a fair military presence in Tokyo to the south of Tarsus.

Other units reside in Cordoba and Edo.

The Save

b.t.w. ... I saved the 1760AD game ... then made a few changes and saved it again ... that's OK isn't it? I don't need to altert the GOTM moderator(s) do I?

Good job, Cam, excellent job kicking Toku's behind!

Still a few big cities to go, but the first dent is made...

Good job. Don't worry about not going for Kyoto, probably more feasible with cannons anyway. With Toledo spitting them out we should be able to overwhelm Toku.

Hopefully Toku took so much land from the Greek that eliminating him and filling Saladin's island will be enough.

Thanks for the "good jobs", but much like Cabert indicated re. one of his rounds a few turnsets earlier - it was more a case of just applying the good work created in the preceding turns.

I'm confident that the game is won, but still concerned that a counter-strike could see a crawl rather than charge to the finish - hopefully I'm wrong about how fast or slow we'll get there. I'd imagine Tokugawa's still got a lot of Cannons behind the lines.

Tokugawa's land + our own + a couple of border pops will win it for us. Note that Japan has settled on a few islands, bumping up his land percentage. We have fairly poor intel' on the north west portion of the main continent - uncertain whether there are a few Japanese cities or open land.

He's refusing to talk.

Actually, this is the last roster:
The Thin Roster
Remconius (on deck)
cabert (cleaned up Isa)
Stuge (UP)

Cam_H (skip till Oct 14th)
patagonia (skip till Oct 7th)
lordofcivs (A.W.O.L.)
Pigswill (lurking)
Cam Returned and popped in his rightful turn, making me up.

This is a got it, but I'll wait for cabert to confirm he read this.

Go captain, go!
I fixed my protected asset issue and can play the next round whenever needed.

A few ideas : so near to the win, we can start thinking about what can make it faster.
I think building a few settlers in mecca is clearly a winner.
After that, the new cities will need the fastest border pop possible. With sistin chapel, this is obtained through assigning a citizen specialist on top of the free specialist from mercantilism and building culture. This way you have 5 culture/ turn without religion = border pop in 3 in the worst situation.
Other than that, we have money we could use to upgrade galleys to galleons and caravels to frigates or catapults to cannons.
If we need more upgrades, lets forget science for the rest of the game.

This game is almost finished. Toku is only half the man he once was and seems to have enough land for victory. Took 5 cities, we'll need the rest of the continent for victory.

I also declared on Alex so our barb friends could take some more tiles and I built a few settlers for yet more tiles.

Our fleet of frigates is moving to protect Beshablik from invasions from Alex.

Turn 395, 1760 AD:
Remconius: Turn off science and maximize income for upgrades.
I am unsure why we are building observatories everywhere.... Grenadiers and cannons should do the job!
You have constructed a Grocer in Seville. Work has now begun on a Bank.
You have trained a Grenadier in Murcia. Work has now begun on a Jewish Temple.
Qin Shi Huang's Golden Age has begun!!!
Qin Shi Huang has completed The Taj Mahal!

THE SAVE

:)
Seems on good tracks.
Time for optimazation hasn't come yet, but we're getting close. Do we plan to whip anything in the near future?
If not, I suggest switching to caste system and apply total artist mode in cities coming out of revolt for a dual border pop :).

We have about three SoD in Arbela, Tokyo and Osaka. More units are arriving in Tarsus and Edo.

I suggest sending the Osaka stack along the coast to the west. The Tokyo stack SW towards the 15 pop city taking whatever is in between. The Arbela stack can go NW then South to take whatever is there, including Alex.

We are currently at 52% land with 4 stacks in revolt. I like the caste system idea, lets get to 64% asap.

Play us to victory if you can, cabert. I won't mind not getting another set. :)

happy to hear it ;).[party]

Inherited turn : I make a very large whipping round, then forget to switch to caste system :(

1788 : I switch to caste system

1790 : Osaka is ours (I suicided a barrage catapult just because it's such a backwards unit, it's better down)

1792 : tokugawa would give us liberalism + something for peace. Now, that's what I call a late proposal...

1794 : I drop a few cannons on the greek island. Hoping for the best ...
We're at 53.65% land. I move a settler + LB out of persepolis for land grabbing. Hoping he doesn't meet a japanese knight.

1796: knossos and satsuma are ours.
We're at 56.80% land

1798 : we're at 57.54% land. Our injured cannons in greek land heal, while our frigates bomb the defenses down.

1800 : I found Otrar SW of persepolis. we're at 58.65% land.

1802 : vandal is ours. We're at 89.93% land. Tokugawa would give us 2 techs + a city for peace :).
nononono, you still have cities I can take next turn

1804: ephesus and argos are ours. We're at 60.78% land. With a few cities bound to come out of revolt soon, and a few border pops in sight. Victory is near...

1806 : we get a great merchant in persepolis. I send him to the nearest chinese city for a quick $ infusion. The chinese city is in revolt due to our cultural pressure :). We're at 61.70% land. 2 settlers are under way, cities still are to come out of revolt and more border pops are awaited.
I'm torn... shall I leave the final round to someone else or not
The answer is no!
I press enter and we have won the game!

39k score at 1808 AD. Not too bad, no wooden spoon for us.
I should have taken the japanese peace offer for score, but it wouldn't have changed the finish date, so I feel like I did for the best.
