SGOTM 06 - Fifth Element

Nice to see we're all around (but the justified Merum).

Civ, take your time for play.
Just next time find 3 mins for a post (also Sweeta)!

As i alredy said, for the civic change i agree on all, but i prefer Representation.

But since we're a team, if the majority prefer PS, go ahead, even if i don't see that boost in production.

Another thing: we need CS once we have to do the settler spam, not necessarily now. We can probably save 1 turn of anarchy (to have 1 more later) and continue to whip.

So... I locked myself out last night and had to stay with a friend. After 24 hours or so playing "survivor', I'm not in any mood to play. Is civ up, or skipped?

For what i know, Civ is up.

Okay, the Civ gods briefly tried to conspire to prevent me from playing, and misplaced my CD. I have since, however, found it, and am playing my turnset now. Right this second. I promise. Really.

Turnset played. Here is the save.

Very quiet turnset in all, with four turns of Anarchy. After a bit of looking and calculation I decided to go with Police State. The military production is really what we have to focus on at the moment, and the war weariness bonus will help once the blood starts flowing. We didn't really need the happiness of Representation (only Timbuktu is unhappy, and it's missing a Market), and while the added research from Mercantilism is missed, our military production is quite spectacular.

We had a barb city pop on our continent, the very northwestern tip. I have a valiant force of four knights en route to dispatch of it.

On my last turn I had a minor Cyrus landing near Athens. I dispatched it easily, though we lost a War Elephant in a 50/50 fight. Other than that there was no conflict.

Pretty quiet overall. Sorry again for the delay.

Oh yes, and also, I had a crash at the start of my second turn, and had to reload from the autosave. It was early in the turnset and I didn't have any military moves to re-make.

Perhaps just PM Alan to notify him of the.... actually it probably doesn't matter, and wil show up in the log anyway.

Got it, will have a look and post a plan tonight, and then probably play tomorrow.

All right, things are moving let's go fast, even if i catched this:
It will be much like SGOTM-2 and SGOTM-6 - lightbulb Astro, kill em all. (...)

Right. So... make an army and attack Ragnar. Seems pretty simple. The attached s/s is a proposed attack plan for 7 galleons, but will depend on the intelligence gathered. Upsala won't require much of a garrison, perhaps a couple of lbs and jumbos, and Nidaros will take all the heat due to position.

Otherwise, a road will be built to the westernmost goldmine for a debarkation point. The main question I have is about techs. How long until we shut it down? The next major techs are gunpowder techs - are we going to chase this?

I don't think Uppsala is worth keepin', once Nidaros expand its borders it gives us only 2 tiles.
We can take Nidaros first, and with a bigger stack, keeping some spare troops to take Uppsala, while the ones in Nidaros defend the city.

After Uppsala will be razed, the conquerors can move fast to Nidaros, or re-embark to aim a new target.

Don't forget a medic unit in every stack!

the save

Nidaros is ours, and Upsala is gone, as per captain's orders ;) Knights are the goods, as are cats and trebs, but don't neglect a couple of bows and mace/pikes for safety. Our conquering army is recovering in Nidaros, and can soon push on with the aid of a supermedic chariot. Another army/fleet is forming on the NE coast, but is lacking support troops. The seas are pretty much ours, for the moment, and a caravel net is set up in the east, but just keep monitoring in case we need more galleons.

We're up against muskets, which isn't a huge hassle, but let's blitz before they get rifles. So, keep reinforcing the 2 armies and take em out! Otherwise, 2 settlers are being built, one for the west coast gold, and another for the centre, as we need to get irrigation to the north. We have engineering, drama, and are limping toward music. We could just turn tech off, I guess.

Damn, forgot the battle stats.

edit: Forgot to mention, we have a GS and a GP sitting in York (iirc)

Who are team 2 and 6?
I guess Ragnar is one of them, although I didn't notice any other indication. Tiles? A lot. I forgot to switch the alert on, but on f8, I noticed we weren't close yet.

I think we should be watching for the opportunity to win by Conquest vs domination. Dependent on how quickly and successfully we kill off our first few cities.

I agree, GB much will depend from how much resistance we'll encounter and from the luck we'll have in combats.
For now we need to take some city in any case, so go ahead.

roster:
greatbeyond - UP
blubmuz - on deck
civicide
sweetacshon - resting
Merum - auto-skipped until news

I have the save but have been contemplating the next moves. Will proceed in about 16 hours. I favor sending our force in the East to attack Saladin and open a two front war. There are two Viking cities on the island, one of these has the Buddhist holy city. Is it there a benefit to capturing it?

Is it worth switching to Universal Suffrage to buy units or does PS get them faster?

I suggest we use our GS and GP because unless we are going to research the techs our GS and GP will discover first, then hope we get something that is more useful when we lightbulb them, we are just wasting them. Do we use them for techs or settle them? Neither Philo or Divine Right really give us anything immediately useful.

I'm thinking it might be worth it to trigger a Golden Age. Combined with the production bonus we're already seeing for our being in Police State, and our need to crank out a very large army, that's probably our best use for them.

Better late than never.

I could bet that Nidaros was the Buddist Holy, was i wrong?

Use of the GP: yes, i agree the techs they can LB are useless for us: better a GA, sitting them is a looong time benefit, and we have a short time.

War: just take the closest/easiest targets, and targets that gave us Land tiles soon.

I am going to stop for the day and reevaluate what to do.
I have played 4 turns and disaster has struck. One of our stacks moving out from Nidaros ran into a nasty surprise. Arabian Cavalry and a large stack of units. We have lost 7 knights, a WE, Maceman, Xbow, and Treb, and we were on a hill for the 25% bonus as well as having very strong units. They used their large stack of cats to beat us down. They lost a Cav, Treb, and 3 Cats. They had lots of HA and Cam Archers, as well as Cats. I am sure that they have lots of wounded units, from the Combat log, but they will be probably be able to get back to their city before we can get to them.
Our Troops for the 2nd front are enroute to the west side of Arabia as their cities are lightly defended with just a couple LB. If we do take them I would consider keeping only one in the area and Destroying the rest.
I want to double check the makeup of our Troops and stacks and see what the best counter will be. and if it makes sense to press the attack now with the 2nd large stack outside Nidaros, or wait for reinforcements. Will it be better to get them to come to us and hit them with our own stack of Cats and cut them down to size and slaughter the survivors?
We have learned Drama, I suggest we make a beeline for Military Tradition so we get our own Calvary. Perhaps in retrospective we should have used our GS for Philo, as it appears we may be falling too far behind in techs.

Any preferences where to put our Settlers that have been built. I see the city locations that were marked. My feeling is that the site above Athens should be 2N from where it is marked.
