SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

The square the workers are roading on only became Greek territory this turn.

I was going to pillage the horses when I got down there, but there was no way I was losing another two workers, and on occasion they were on different tiles - so 2 LBs each guarded them - with the luck I had with 50% shots (0 from 2) I wasn't about to take too many chances with those precious babies.

Good to see you did try to pillage the horses. Too bad it wasnt possible. Let's make it a top priority for the next turn set. Even sending our main stack there.

How big is our SoD anyway?

Another top priority should be to close our defensive line with two LBs.

I'm having a problem; I've played a couple of turns and I'm getting CTDs. I think I may have to reinstall the whole lot. What to do now? Do I pass on the latest autosave with comments or what?

I'd forgotten to set my autosaves to every turn, so no new save from me. :hammer2:

Just skip me and continue from chopster's save and I'll keep quiet and tweak the .ini file.

Unfortunate Stuge. CTDs really stink. Better make a note to setup your autosave after reinstalling...

Go ahead, cabert, take it away!

played up to 275 AD, not much progress but we're alive.

125 AD : move 2 LB towards Sparta.
140 AD : same thing, + other troops moving.
155 AD : Spotted carthaginian troops, obviously closing in on london.
Civ4ScreenShot0002.JPG

170 AD: troops moving
185 AD : greek horses pillaged. Gold mine back on track.
200 AD : GG in Sparta. I have 2 LBs next to it and it's only 2 archers... double 70% odds make it a bit of gamble but I don't want greece to benefit from this guy. I get lucky and Sparta gets burned.
215AD : Carthage has numidian cavalry and uses it. 1 LB down.
230 AD : Although I had sent him (with 4 workers!) in the woods, the second LB also gets killed by this lone numidian cavalry. I should have used the workers to lure him away :(.
245 AD : the carthaginian stack is somewhat exhausted but the price was high (2LBs, 1 axe, 1 spear died on our side). Not much pillaging done though.
260 AD : greece settles mycenae on chopster's spot. I vote for letting it grow then capture it. 1 LB on the forest hill next to it somehow forces it to work a 2F tile ;).
275 AD : great prophet immediately settled in London.
Our glorious WB has found another island to the east.

Just looking at the first screenshot:

Why is the defensive perimeter not closed? Two Longbows on the forested hills and it will be difficult to attack us from the south...

Nice job taking out Sparta. Those LB vs numidian losses just suck. Hopefully the RNG will be kinder in the future.

How much longer to catapults? We've got to start taking cities soon to match the AI production.

Got it.

Good work intercepting that Carthaginian stack Cabert.

Based on the power graph, we're probably 1-2 sets away from seeing some Malinese troops as well, but should be free from Greek/Carthaginian interference for a little while.

I'll do my best to get our military back on track and start building some catapults. We could do with securing a supply of Jumbos too, once the opportunity's available.

In terms of tech, how about picking up sailing and then Bureaucracy once construction's in. We've already got CoL so currency isn't a priority at the moment.

agreed.
currency's only useful if we go for domination, and that's not just yet.

Yes, no need for cash trading here!

Seems like the RNG has been against us a little in the past couple of turnsets - maybe we're in for some "payback" later!

Once we start taking a few cities we should be sitting quite pretty from the production side of things - there's some nice real estate out there to be had.

Catapults will really shift the balance in the next couple of turn sets IMO.

Apologies for the lack of screenshots and consequently long-winded report, but I’m having network issues at the moment and was only able to transfer the save file off my Civ PC.

Highlights

Went 5-0 against Greek Archers; captured Mycenae as soon as it reached size 2; researched Construction and Sailing so we've now got iron online and 4 Catapults built.

Report

275AD (475 turns left) – pick up from Cabert. MM York for hammers instead of food, bringing the spear there down to 3 turns.

IBT – lone Carthaginian sword disappears from sight

290AD (474 turns left) – London builds Axe > Longbow

320AD (472 turns left) – York builds Spear > Spear

350AD (470 turns left) – London builds Longbow > Longbow

365AD (469 turns left) – Mansa and Hannibal both have Alphabet so we can see their techs. They’ve both got construction – we’re going to need more spears to counter Jumbos.

IBT – Longbow outside Athens defeats Greek HA; a stack of 3 combat 1 Archers are leaving Athens, presumably headed our way. Alex has also built a Phalanx there, presumably with the iron from Mycenae.

380AD (468 turns left) – York builds Spear > Chariot (Medic!); Nottingham builds Longbow > Spear

395AD (467 turns left) – Nottingham builds Spear > Spear (one chop in)

410AD (466 turns left) – Construction in, research set to Sailing; London builds Longbow > Catapult; Nottingham builds Spear > Catapult (another chop in)

IBT – Greece is now building swords (I can see one in Athens and one to the square SE of it); Hadrumetum (Carthaginian) is the holy city for Christianity, which means Hannibal now has Theocracy available

425AD (465 turns left) – York builds Chariot (promoted to medic 1) > Catapult

470AD (462 turns left) – Sailing in, research > CS; York builds Catapult > Catapult (another chop done); London builds Catapult > Axe (Greek swords on the way)

The 3 Greek Combat 1 Archers arrive on the cows by Mycenae; we’ve got 4 Longbows waiting to take the city, but it’s still size 1 so I can use them to take out the archers and win some free XPs. Unpromoted LB vs Combat 1 archer on open ground is a 98.9% chance of victory – first 2 win without a scratch; 3rd is down to 3.5 so promoted up to heal and covered by a shock axe and combat 2 spear.

485AD (461 turns left) – Mycenae is finally size 2; combat 2 cover Longbow attacks at 89.7% and… wins! Combat 1 cover Longbow attacks at 90.8% and… wins! Mycenae is ours and kept.

500AD (460 turns left) – York builds Catapult > Longbow (we want a CG3 one for Mycenae); Nottingham builds Catapult > Catapult

Plan:

Watch out for a stack of 2 Greek Swords, a chariot and an archer which should be showing up by Mycenae or the cows any turn now. We should have sufficient units in and around Mycenae to intercept and eliminate them.

We’ve got 4 catapults and can build about 4/10 turns with the odd additional unit thrown in, so the next player should be able to build up enough to go on the attack.

Militarily the main threat to us will be War Elephants, which is why I focused mainly on Spear production (over Axes). We’ve got iron online now with the capture of Mycenae so it might not hurt to throw a sword or two into the mix; if London builds them they’ll only need 1XP for CR3 which should be pretty manageable.

Back home I had the workers split up doing some housekeeping around each of our cities; now we’ve got Mycenae the priority should probably be getting that hooked up to our road network and mining the forest hill 1NE to get a monument built there.

Aside from that, the main thing is to watch out for fresh Carthaginian/Mali stacks. The power graph suggests they’re both building up for an attack, although we’ve done a good job of keeping pace recently.

Roster
-Remconius
-chopster
-stuge
-cabert
-patagonia (just played)
-pigswill (UP)
-Cam_H (on deck)

Great turnset patagonia, well done. 5-0 it's nice to have those kind of odds, although they were all high percentage victories it's still nice for the RNG to be a little kind to us every now and then.

So nice of Alex to build us a city right where we wanted it.

With regards to CS research - I think we're clear that by now we'd be able to self research Astronomy faster than we could bulb it if we need it anyway so I say Maces will be a nice addition to the Army once we get CS and Machinery. Also with London units only needing 1 XP for CR3 they'll be hard to stop.

Got it.

Apart from the permanent threat of total annihilation one of the problems we're facing is health. I'm wondering what the team think about going for calendar before CS.

In fact, why CS? We'd likely be better off with feudalism instead of bureaucracy, machinery first for crossbows is a better route to maces. The only other benefit of CS is chain irrigation and that's not a very obvious priority. Or are we aiming for some kind of liberalism slingshot?

My thinking was that we've already got one settled GG so London can pump 5XP units that much faster if we swap civics. By the time we've researched it, we'll have earned another who could go to Athens/York/Nottingham.

XBows are only really useful against AI maces, and we'll get to maces of our own faster with Bureaucracy to fund research.

Calendar gets us health and happy and allows London to get bigger, but no bigger immediately than slotting a granary into the queue there would do. Both techs have benefits, but I feel like CS will benefit us more. If we're able to get the ball rolling against Greece, we should pick up access to wheat and sheep, which will likely solve our health problems before we've learned Calendar.
