SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

I guess we should leave Bureaucracy for now. Every city will be building units. That's a lot of lost xp!

It'll boost us later.

Nope, nothing.
I should have had a look at the save last night, silly me.

I'm really excited about our progress in the last turnset - it seems we got just the jump we needed, and I think we're in with a real shot at winning this game.

Goal update
Has anyone done an updated count of the tiles we can see that we can reach by galley? If so is there enough that we can reach domination without Astronomy?

Our island is roughly 500 tiles, and we can see another 100 in tundra and islands. Makes about 600.

We should explore to the south west once alex is gone to see if there are more tiles to be seen.

As we are still in Slavery, I would like to see York, London, Nottingham and maybe others whip away at least 1 pop to boost the military machine. Before we switch.

London has one tile supporting only itsself and producing 1 gold. It's the last chance to whip for a while....

Yes, that's still quite a way from the approx 778 we'd require for domination.

We'll have to see what we can see!

Also, I'm not averse to a quick whip before changing civics.

Question: do anarchy turns count towards depletion of whip unhappiness?

I assume by Pigswill's silence that he's not in a position to play.

Unfortunately I'm going to have to skip due to the weekend-timing thing.

Over to Remco!

:hammer2:

I'll give this a whirl tomorrow (working today), I'll try to look at the save this evening and post some thoughts.

I hope my machine is behaving better. I've been running a few games with hod mod, some days it whizzes thru, other days it crashes for the sake of it.

It's cabert's turn followed by mine isn't it? He wanted a swap until Sunday, but I couldn't play before then anyway.

Also, unless I've missed something, we're in serfdom and not slavery, so we can't whip anything before revolting to CS. That means we can revolt to Representation and CS immediately.

I switched to slavery in order to whip a couple of war jumbos out of Hadrumetum.

I finally played 12 turns.
I don't like leaving a job half done :p.

IHT whip swords, cats, barracks, then switch to rep+caste system
turn 251 : moving troops.

turn 252 : intercepting troops heading to hadremetum and other cities. We lost an elephant to a mace. It's getting nasty.
we're out of revolt, and CS is down to 4 turns. However, we' barely get even at 0% science.

turn 253 : bad time for our troops. we lose a LB in the woods to a catapult (after he killed an enemy LB) and an elephant to a horse archer (he was badly wounded after killing a catapult).
Athens comes out of revolt, and expands its borders. I assign 1 engineer, food and iron.

athens_out_of_revolt.JPG

This second capital certainly will help us.

turn 254: troops moving, killing enemies.

turn 255 : I'm dumb! I didn't even think that the HAs could move 2 tiles :crazyeye:. Sometimes, it's better to be lucky than good, and our lone archer kills the HA.
We weren't far from losing Nottingham! (from the combat log, the HA only had 21% odds so, no lucky draw, but I don't like my own clumsiness.)
CS is in, I go for metal casting.
troops moving. I pillage the greek copper.

turn 256 : 3 swordsmen and a chariot get warlord Xped. The chariot gets medic 3, 1 sword is now CR 3 combat 1 cover (he was still wounded), the others are promotable, but are left unpromoted for now.
Alex has sent a pair of longbows our way. (to athens maybe). I let them come.

turn 257 : troops moving.

turn 258: we're down to 0% science, and losing money. I have 2 courthouses under way, but we'll probably need to run a few merchants before long.

turn 259 : hum, can't remember this one.

turn 260: the greek LBs passed athens . I guess there is a city south of athens I did not spot. Siege of corinth finally starts!

turn 261 : siege on corinth.

found_more_greeks.JPG

turn 262 : corinth is ours. It did cost us a few catapults, but charismatic really shines, when your troops go out of the barracks with 9 xps :).
I sacrificed a fresh catapult from london with barrage 3 (well I TRIED to sacrifice it, it retreated ). After that, the odds were a lot better!
I kept corinth, and now is the time to decide on domination or conquest.

From my counting we need 612 tiles. I don't believe there are that many in our reach.

the save

Victory condition depends on what we can reach south of Athens.

I do think we should stop taking cities at this point. Any more cities and we
ll be in serious financial trouble. We now have enough mass to wipe the continent smoothly.

Roster
- Remconius
- chopster
- stuge
- cabert
- patagonia (UP)
- pigswill (on deck)
- Cam_H

[edit] Monday morning:sad: , just re-reading my post.... forgot to mention:

Good turnset cabert!

I'm not very good at steady conquests, but I can see some good reasons for not stopping here :
- We have CoL and can do something on the economic side to make good use of the new cities (lack of currency is a pain, although without foreign trade routes and without trading for gold, it's not a big one).
- more cities = more pop = less unit upkeep
- there are a few capitals to get on our continent

Of course, if we're going for conquest this is all a non issue.

I'd be inclined to suggest some kind of "happy medium".

We should decide before capturing a city if it will be of benefit to our empire as a whole, and therefore whether to keep or raze. Food rich is good enough in caste system as we can run scientists or merchants.

For example if that tundra city of Alex's there doesn't yield something special, I couldn't see any reason to keep it at this point.
