SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

If we're going for horses (or elephants), stables make the 9xp gg useless.
If we're going for trebs, CR3 >> CR2 !

I suggest using high hammers city, regardless of xp results.

how many troops can we churn out of argos before the game ends?

chopster, your got it is from 5 feb. It's now 4 days later. Normal SG game rules are 48 hours to play after a got it.

I am glad to see you are not awol as you do keep posting, but next time if you cannot play within 48 hours please request a swap or skip. You can then catchup when your RL is less demanding.

If you can, please play tonight, or swap with Stuge.

No response from chopster.

Stuge can you pick up and a play a turnset?

Sorry guys, what a week/weekend - RL came crashing down.
I was going to post for a skip today but it seems that's already been decided.

The next week or so isn't looking great for play time either.
I'll still be around the forum here and there, but actual civving is going to be near on impossible.

Roll on lads!

No problem, chopster.

I played up to 1601, not sure how many turns that makes.

The good bits:

The bad bits are that we lost Carthage and Djenne to Mansa. He pulled a SoD of trebuchets from somewhere, so there was not much to do about it. I retreated from Djenne without a fight, there were no defensive units there at the time. Carthage's two longbows and spear went down taking a couple of trebs with them.

So this wasn't exactly a mop-up set, but we're getting there. More Malinese cities will burn next set.

Those stacks should be able to crack some heads.

In assorted news, I merged the GG in York. Also, we met Saladin, who has even more points than Cyrus, fantastic.

I noticed that we were researching guilds without HBR, so I fixed that. Guilds is now twelwe turns away, thanks to war booty.

After we've razed Mansa's last big cities, we should change gears. Right now we still need the production oomph, but when we have enough troops at the front to get the job done, we should seriously focus on growing our cities. London is size eight in 1600 AD.

Another priority should be settlers. We cannot afford to keep enemy cities right now, but once the land is cleared, we must fill it with our own cities. There are lots of spots, particularly in former Mali, with great commerce potential. (I.e. instant BFC full of towns.) Otherwise we have no chance whatsoever of winning this game. Our economy sucks big time ATM.

Also, once we get guilds knights should dominate the unit builds. I have this horrible feeling that stacks from beyond the seas will start arriving soon and knights are our best means of facing them.

cabert you hinted at unavailability, are you willing and able?

Well done Stuge! :) Can't see the save right now, but the report is very encouraging.

Yep.

Not an official got it, but I can theoretically play tomorrow afternoon if needed. Might need to wait until Sunday otherwise.

Alright, patagonia, try tomorrow. If not, maybe Pigswill can play an intermediate set.

Just while we're on the roster ...

I'm going to soon be strictly Saturday mornings only (Australian time) so I may need to cut in or drop out (if that's OK) if my turnset falls in the wrong spot. So far I don't think it's been a problem.

Also, I'll be heading overseas for the first three weeks of April and will be unable to play during this sojourn. I'm not sure whether our game will be done by then or not, but I'm letting you know just by way or forewarning.

:)

Cam: That means you are playing Friday evening/night european time (GMT+1) I think.

I'll try to slot you in, whenever you almost up.

I've played 11 turns up to 1634AD. The main things to report:

Hannibal is dead! Sicca was captured and burned on the last turn of my set, so Carthage is no more.

We took 3 other cities. Tadmekka (a size 1 Malinese city that was autorazed), Djenne (held - London should give us a prophet in 4 turns; building the Jewish shrine there may help, although we've burned most of the Jewish cities now on reflection, building the Christian shrine in Hadrumetum makes more sense based on the religions in our cities) and Pharsalos (Greek, razed).

Alex has 2 cities left that we know about: Rhodes and the tundra marble site I've sent a longbow to investigate, which we'll want to take out soon to remove motherland unhappiness in our former Greek cities. However, we need to rebuild and unite our stacks to finish off Mansa because...

Mansa's got rifling.

He got it just before we retook Djenne, which made that battle rather costly in terms of units (as did some harsh RNG). I think we should mass units in Djenne and take out Gao, followed by Carthage. He's almost certainly got one further city to the NE of Gao on the mainland, and may have others, but those 3 should be our priority.

Cyrus also has rifling and astronomy. He landed a pathetic, but annoying stack of 2 catapults and a rifle on the copper 1S of London during my set, which we took out for the loss of an elephant. That probably means Saladin has rifles too, so we need to keep an eye out for landing parties on our west coast (and settler parties on the east).

Techwise we're 1 turn from Guilds. I think Banking (for mercantilitsm), Gunpowder, Chemistry and Steel (for cannons) is the logical progression from here.

NB You can see from the power graph where Cyrus and Saladin got rifles. It's somewhat alarming, so we'll have to rely on traditional AI ineptitude at amphibious invasions to keep us in the game.

Yep, mass siege and Grenadiers sound like the way forward if we're to have any hope.

Once we secure our land mass we can start to get a real grip on things - even if we only manage to reduce the others to the point of winning a time victory that would be cool!

I agree that banking would be great. Not only for mercantilism though. Remember we have a hard time paying for our empire, and a few beefed up banks may help. (at least one in the bureaucratic capital)

If there is no got it and play from Pigswill by tomorrow, it's over to Cam_H, so he can play his turns on the one morning he is allowed ;)
