SGOTM 06 - Trash Team

I'll hang fire a bit and let Cam plays his set Friday nite/Saturday morning (depending on time zone) then pick it up from there.

OK ... I'm aware I'm up :shifty: ...

I'll play within 24 hours, although if there's any last views, directives, etc., please fire away. :)

Killing off MM is priority 1. Alex close second, then we should finally be able to see whether domination is feasible.

Techwise we go for banking and steel.

We can slowly start to focus on economical improvements:
Bureaucracy & mercantilism. And building banks and libraries.

Good thing our lands will be defended by:

Spoiler patagonia's powerstrategy :

Assuming that the AI is inept at amphibious invasions...

:undecide:

I played a short turnset because I was not thrilled about how things were looking. To be honest, after the third turn I ended up leaving the game for a few hours as I was less than inspired about things – even now I feel the best thing for the team is for me to pass this one on.

Major developments:
  • Got the city of Carthage back
  • Researched Guilds and Currency
  • Built the Church of the Nativity in Hadrumetum
1637AD: Guilds came in > Currency. A roaming / pillaging Combat 2 Malinese Rifleman near Corinth. This unit will prove to be a major headache – our units had terrible odds and I had trouble co-ordinating an attack.

1640AD: Took out a Malinese Rifle with a War Elephant after he killed an English Longbow. Also took out a Malinese Musketman with a Mace after we hit it first with a Mace. Pop Great Prophet (at 80%).

1643AD: Spot the Malinese capital of Gao – 4x 'City Garrison 2' Longbows, 1x 'City Garrison 2' Rifleman. Completely under-equipped with our SoD to address that. Also the Longbow (now Drill 4) makes its way down to Knossos, the Greek Capital, that has 4x Longbows (of which 2x 'City Garrison 1').

sgotm6_1658AD_knossos.jpg

1646AD: Smaller SoD retakes the city of Carthage. Thankfully the Malinese Longbow doesn't take on our injured War Elephant i.b.t. The Clams will be pillaged by the end of the turnset.

sgotm6_1658AD_carthage.jpg

Build the Christian Shrine (Church of the Nativity) in Hadrumetum.

sgotm6_1658AD_shrine.jpg

1652AD: Currency > Gunpowder

1655AD: Do the Shuffle. Some pillaging near Corinth by Malinese Rifleman.

i.b.t. Alexander moves a Catapult and Longbow out of Knossos.

1658AD: Refer note on 1637AD re. Malinese Rifleman. Throw best nearby units at it – two Maces fall before being cleaned up with a Longbow. A Nottingham Mace takes out the first of two Longbows in Hurrian – a coastal city to the north with a view to building XP and razing :gold:. A healed SoD moves to the north of Greece’s Rhodes. I unterrupted a Temple build on the last turn for a Work Boat as per the marker note left in the game.

sgotm6_1658AD_screenie.jpg

2 cents: Wiping out Alexander should be quite do-able in the next few turnsets if we’re prepared to redirect troops down there, but a lot of Trebuchets (I suspect) need to be pumped out to address the twice-promoted Riflemen that Mansa’s producing. I felt incapable of successfully attacking Gao with what we have … or at least could not contemplate risking everything that the team’s done to date on a very unlikely siege.

The save

Got it.

We've started researching gunpowder, maybe go for banking first and switch to mercantilism as we won't be trading with the AI. We have a lot of tiles waiting to be improved. Could also allocate some specialists in our larger cities instead of farms.

I think that we aim to finish off Alex. Maybe pillage Mansa's remaining cities to cut down on his production of rifles.

Realistically we wait for grens or take massive losses. I'd rather wait and improve our economy and research. We've still got the other AIs who we haven't touched so far and will no doubt me miles ahead of us.

I agree. If we can keep Mansa under check, there's no use in taking massive casualities.

Good stuff, but tough game...

How do we keep Mansa off our backs. I guess he will be rebuilding too.

Let's focus our efforts on Alex but keep enough units in MM land.

Pigswill seems to be AWOL

Any last minute advice?

And continue to fight I did!!!

Summary:
Razed 2 Mali cities (MM still alive with 3 small cities)
Razed 2 Greek cities (alex still alive?!?)
Razed 1 Barbarian city
Fended off Cyrus (landed with two rifles and a treb next to the capital which had 1 LB :O) Managed to save the capital.
Discovered banking, calendar.
Switched Bureaucracy, Mercantilism.

(Can't see the game but) Good going!

I saw Rifles and expected Gao to 'instantly' upgrade its Longbows within a turn or two. I'm delighted it didn't! :)

So are we close to re-settling the land, or do we have to wait further for Mali to become extinct?

I'm going to have to ask for another skip guys.
Have just flown back in to town and the sh1tstorm doesn't look like clearing any time soon!

With any luck I'll get to chime in here now and then but play time won't be likely.

I DO care about the game though, and I have really enjoyed the SG experience so far!

I'd been meaning to play my set for a few days and kept putting it off thinking 'too tricky for me' . So I apologise for that   .

If you can tolerate my poor play I'll give it another go (and actually play this evening) or I can wait in the queue.

We have to kill of Mali first. In the time I razed his southern two cities, MM resettled two cities which both have several rifles in them, bringing his total to an estimated 3 cities. Hit a city with 3-4 trebs and mop up with Maces works well.

If we let him be it will be tricky, it will be 20-30 turns at least before we get grenadiers.

Pigswill go ahead and play tonight. Be careful some Malie units are coming down. Our stack is wiping across the top heading north-west. Build more maces and trebs and take out MM.

Got it.

For single rifles out foraging its best to build maces, for foraging stacks cats are slightly better than trebs (cheaper too) but trebs are the city raiders.

Played 10 turns. Save uploaded. razed 2 mali cities, found another one, a few trebs heading towards Tekedda.Cyrus landed rifle, 4 grens and treb near Athens who have been busy pillaging. Athens now reasonably defended. 4 turns from gunpowder.
I'll post a proper report (with pictures) later.

Good progress Pigswill!
