SGOTM 07 - Unusual Suspects

That graphical mod isn't telling us something very important:

I don't think CivScale changes the content of what's displayed. The screenie I posted is the default vanilla tech trade screen (with a tan background). The screenie you posted is a BtS style tech trade screen, which makes me think you're running whichever mod that displays additional info on that screen. It appears that same mod was included in BtS, so BtS out of the box has the additional info displayed.
Toku wants Mysticism people!

1) So, we trade Alpha to Spain right away for Mysticism + BW (It openes ironworking) + if she gives sth we take it

(P.S. can I check what would Spain give, or only active player can do that?)

2) We give Mysticism to Toku right away! Will he change his mind and start trading? We have to try it.
I'm doubtful this will get Toku to trade with us because we'll get at most a +2 bonus & that won't push him up to Pleased.
@Fear of AI brokering techs

This is an irrational fear, like all fears. ;) They won't trade the very next turn, I would put my hand into fire for it!
I dunno, but I swear I've seen AIs trade away a tech I just traded them to their buddies on the next turn on Immortal.
Edit 1: also note that Liz doesn't have Poly. She would be able to research Literature if she did.

Edit 2: All right! Izzy offers:

Myst+BW+Archery OR
Myst+BW+AH

I know what you will say, take the archery. But, AH is 143 beakers and Archery is 86 beakers. Also note that Izzy doesn't know how to sail so when we take the Sailing, we can sell it to her for Archery.
We also have to remember that prices go up after every trade. We need to take big stones first.
Okay, this I can agree with.

Shall we go ahead and have Melior play the next turn and report back with our new options or go ahead and pass it back to Marconos and let him play the turn?

Someone should.

I'm with you Melior, we might as well move ahead a turn this evening unless we have objections.

Since it looks like there's a minority opinion that we should trade only with Isabella in the first turn, can we do a compromise move here?

What I mean is trade Alphabet to Isabella for Mysticism, BW & AH. Then, report back to the team without ending the turn, so we have a better picture of what we're risking (or potentially gaining) by rolling the dice & ending the turn without any additional trades? That's not against the rules is it? Playing less than one turn & submitting another save, that is?

I must say, I like the way you think. As I see no reason for it to be illegal, unorthadox yes, but legal, go ahead and report back.

I'm not much help here, I never entirely got my head around Diplomacy (although seem to be learning from the convo).

I started a new test game with same neighbours, but so many small things have developed differently (I got Hinduism early, and all but 1 civ were Hindu!!! Which gave +1 happy so I could grow even faster, and my continent is a total Hindu lovefest). I did research Maths (wasn't able to trade) and managed to build Hanging Gardens AND GL (but also other civs seemed to build Stonehenge and Parthenon much later than the real game too). I've kept playing this failed test because I'm having so much fun... about 1AD and in the top few civs having already met someone across the sea. Might get some ideas for later game.

Back to your regularly scheduled forum posts, strategy so far sounds great (and if we can trade for Maths, building Aqueduct + Hanging Gardens would be super, but probably not possible to get them done before GL is available, maybe Aqueduct > GL > HG, I suspect the civs build HG later due to the Aqueduct requirement?).

Okay, pulled the trigger on this trade:

IsabellaAlphabettrade.jpg

It was lopsided enough to get +3 with Isabella, which puts us up to +5 total & Pleased.

I realize that I forgot to enable exotic foreign advisor on my HoF mod. After enabling, the tech trade screen became much more informative:

Looks like Liz does, in fact, have Poly already. She's making a run for GLib would be my bet, since she skipped Math (usually an AI favorite). Looking at the 'Can Research' column for Washington & Asoka, looks like they both know Poly, Meditation, & IW, which should all become available for trade next turn.

I'm tempted to roll the dice by ending the turn & see if we can't pick up Poly, Med, IW, Sailing & Archery all next round. If Alphabet gets traded around on the AI's turn, I'm guessing Asoka won't get it, but Washington is more likely to get it from Isabella. So even if we get nothing from Washington, we should still be able to trade with Asoka. :hmm:

What's worse is that she appears to already have Literature, as it doesn't show up on the techs she is able to research? Or will the researchable techs only show techs we can both research...?

My only suggestion is to maximize production before ending your turn so we can get the library in three turns instead of four.

Hopefully we will be able to get some good trades next turn...

Run two scientists once it is built and we will have a Great Person in 11 turns. If its an Engineer and Liz hasn't finished the GL, we can steal it from her...

I honestly would be utterly shocked if she had Lit. That said, we should still be able to get it from her...bah, I wish we could get math.

This is ok. But you have to update the save you have posted for that turn, AFAIK. (When we are done with this turn, post the save before hitting end of turn.) See the maintenance thread to be sure, I've asked sth like that before.

Just stay cool people.;)

1) We are giving Mysticism to Toku now, right? He probably won't get pleased right away, but this is still a very good move. We could also give more religious techs to him later on.

2) It is extremely unlikely that Liz has Literature only a few turns after Alpha.

3) We can't tell anything about Poly, my conclusion before was wrong. We need to know Poly to see if she can research Literature.

About that minority opinion: ;)

Asoka and Isabella are not that good with each other and Washington is protecting his tech, he doesn't want to trade it yet. It isn't likely that Izzy will trade Alpha right away, IMO.

Let's evaluate this:

1) We trade Alpha to another civ right away

For what? Sailing and archery from most advanced civs? We want ironworking, meditation, priesthood.... It isn't worth it. There are more civs on the map to get sailing and archery.

2) We don't trade right away. Worst case: we lose an advanced civ for the trade, but like I said, this isn't likely IMO.

To summarize it: if we trade now, we have just lost one advanced civ for trade for sure for virtually nothing! If we don't trade, there is a slight possibility of losing a trading partner.

What are we going to research for this turn? How about math, a few beakers to lower the price?

Maths as well. Especially as if we need to chop a forest, we'll get even more hammers thsn usual.

SG etiquette recommends completing the moves for your last turn before posting your save, but it is only a recommendation, and is not mandated in SGOTMs.

I'm following this trading stuff closely but not comfortable enough to say what we should do. Getting some great information and learning a lot. Looking forward to my turn set.

A good argument can be made for math. It seems like Drama would be the other choice.

The "Can Research" column is pretty buggy. My advice is not to pay any attention to it.

Well, does Toku want Mysticism or not? Only Melior Traiano knows. :)

Are there any new ideas? Let's decide what to do.

We can safely agree to the following:

Trade no more tech this turn (fingers crossed with Yamp assurances).

Maximize production to finish library in three turns, effectively stopping population growth.

Set research to Math.

Hit end of turn and come back with a new save next turn, to see what our new options are?

btw, I will be out for the next 10 hrs or so.
