SGOTM 07 - Xteam

Yes, we certailny out-teched you - CRC have matched our tech pace though I think. I thought we did extremely well in that area. You outplayed us in manipulating the AI's early on, well before the PA was signed. You saved many turns there - well done!
It was clear from our pre-game testing that the Pyramids gave significantly faster research later on, but not significantly faster to PA. It also meant starting the warring 20 turns later, at the earliest, and lost a lot of hammer production, running castes and working scientists. We also determined from our pre-testing that having your PA partner capture cities averaged about 5 turns per capture, so we figured the fastest victory was to capture about 5-6 cities pre-PA and then have a reasonably early PA. Our game pretty much worked out like our testing, but faster. I think we averaged 3-4 turns per capture.

:goodjob: Well done by all 3 teams. Murky's documenting some of the lesser known (or even previously unknown) items about the code deserves a big :hatsoff: Their knowledge of the PA power strength formula is a great example.

No, you can sign a PA with the #1 in power. I found the truth in the Murky Thread. If the two target PA partners have >50% of the total world power between them then they won't sign a PA.

There are a few civ folklore fables that are mythbusted in the Murky Thread.

Learning about things like this are great reasons to play these games even if we don't get a medal.

The domination population requirement of 2nd civ +25% was another great find from this game [Thanks Shannon!]. Such a simple rule but so widely unknown before this game

Is it me, or are the other two teams going for dom missing that?

Yes they seem to be. Razing a city of your population rival is about 13 times as beneficial as razing a same-sized city of someone else.

Which is exactly why we attacked Catherine, incurring a double DOW from her n Saladin.

You need to KEEP cities that aren't from your pop rival, or knock out a big city of your pop rival. =)

No Mids for Xteam. We did Great Lighthouse instead. Financial + Cottage Spam + Xtra Trade Routes + Bureaucracy had nice synergies. And our early GM bulbed Metal Casting for an early forge and 2 extra happiness.
From Gnejs' summary, you guys finished Communism 2 turns before us, but you seemed to have had a completely different strategy. Think someone from your team could do an Executive Summary (1 page) of what happened in your game? I'm especially curious about your strategy with key tactical decisions for 1) research, 2) warring, and 3) your great leaders. In addition, to be able to compare our strategies, it would be very useful to know when you built the Heroic Epic.

From memeory I think the HE came quite late - after we had signed a PA even. We built it just as soon as we got our first level 4 unit... :mischief:

Sorry, been busy lately and also been reading. :coffee:

I think that a big difference between our game and Murky's is how we approached it. It seems to me that we looked at the game as two phases, the rush to PA, during which our wars served to compile the turns necessary to achieve an early PA, and I think we achieved that quite well. We then went on to war in order to achieve the domination we determined to be our fastest path to victory.

In Murky's game, they were more, what I would call, integrated in their approach. They also followed a path to an early PA but used their wars more effectively to their desired end game by helping the Mongols to take cities prior to their PA. Thus, they had fewer cities to take once the PA was signed which resulted in a faster victory. A well played game! :trophy:

That prior knowledge of the PA power formula may have been the deciding factor. We took out 17 cities in 70 turns by using superior units, while they used an earlier warring start and larger numbers (1 turn builds) to overwhelm the AI's earlier. The cities taken "pre-PA" are what seperate our 2 finish dates. I think they had already taken 4 cities (4 x 4 turn = 16 turns) plus we had that 10 turn dead time in leif's set when every Roman city was down to 1 defender but Asoka wouldn't attack. That's about a 25 turn swing that would have put us right in line with their T177 finish. This would have been an interesting "post-PA" race if we each had the same number of cities to capture, even with the different PA partners that we choose.

I can't wait until work eases up some so I can find time to read thru more of their thread. They did play a great game.

Yes, they did, and, if and when you have the considerable amount of time needed to read through all their discussion and post what you find interesting, that would certainly be appreciated.

Great game guys! Your power graph kept us on the edge of our seats. Artillery, huh? I'll be giving this thread a close read too! ;)

Congrats JT on your new Eptathalonhood!

Wow. Congrats JT! I haven't played a GOTM for about six or seven months and I'd only played two in six then either. I've not played very much since about GOTM21 though I was a regular before that. You've been busy JT, and doing very well - I hadn't noticed because I've even only very rarely read the GOTM threads in the last six months.
