SGOTM 09 - Maintenance Thread

Agreed on the airship thing, though I doubt we'd have too many teams unaware of their uses. I knew of ALL their uses (barring fog look) as a rookie long ago.

There was a post, fairly recently, over on strategy and tips that shows a player selling techs for GPT and resources. At first we thought he was just using a mod or something, but then another poster replicated it...both said they use the standard 3.17.

And yes, it is serious. I haven't gotten it to work yet, but the science rate in this kind of game and the ability to bleed GPT out of the AI in normal games can break the difficulty of the game. My team agreed not to use it, should anyone actually figure out how to manage it (IIRC you put the GPT box over a tech then click ok/the tech rapidly). However, it would seriously affect this competition if one team does it, so I want to make the existence (and possible legality or illegality) of this glitch clear.
I've followed the link you provided. I understand.
I've seen it's not easily replicable, in fact only one person, the thread starter, managed to use it. Also, you can't buy techs, only sell this way. But if you need gpt you can offer a resource, with no need for strange tricks.
Or you can sell an obsolete tech for a fraction of his value to improve relations and gather some gold.
My conclusion is: nothing to worry on this strange click-trick.
edit: and i prolly have no choices replicating it on my powerful Quad-duo.

I'm not so sure it's not problematic. If you can hose AIs for all their resources and a lesser tech using 1 tech for each, then you can use your own resources for even MORE resources, GPT, or whatever you need. If the AI repeatedly gives up GPT for this it will drop its slider, too, although admittedly that's probably not something you'd want in a tech race competition.

Can't we agree that *anything* is an exploit and shouldn't be used? Or is absolutely everything up for debate? All this "if the game allows it, it must be OK" and "well really, it wouldn't have any effect on the rankings anyway" business gets on my nerves no end. This one would seem to be blindingly obvious. The game as presented to us does not allow the trading of per-turn resources for hard goods, end of story.

Why can't we just play the game as it is. For better or worse, people will always find a way to work the system.

Once this sgotm is over I'd like to get a scenerio of this game, so I can choose level/speed. It's really fun so far!
It would be col to have the ability to generate random maps with random (or selected) opponents with these settings too. What a well designed scenario. The freebee techs are well thought out to change the dynamic of the game.

Seconded. :)

:agree:

Yes, once in life i must admit that Gyathaar, probably tired to put jungles everywhere around the starting spot, thought something different. Not easy, but a great exercise of fantasy for us, poor players.

Next step will be give us a spiritual leader, so we can stop to worry about the civics change. And to spend pages of discussions. The CFC servers will be thankful.

One assume one should not update to patch 3.19 before the SGOTM is over? Guess its also too early to say if future SGOTM will be for 3.17 or 3.19. New mod first i guess?

Wait and see i guess.

Don't update your current working version, or you will cease to be able to open the SGOTM 9 saves.

You can update a COPY of your existing 3.17 installation to 3.19, creating a dual configuration.

Yes, we'll need a new HoF Mod before we can offer xOTMs running 3.19. Watch this space.

All eyes move from AlanH to Denniz.

Submission date is soon one month away. Team Murky WatersTM is planning to complete the game in time. We encourage our competitors to do likewise. Let's show Alan that we respect his deadline this time.

/Erkon - Captain of Team Murky WatersTM

Team Misfits also intends to finish by the deadline as originally given. This has been a very interesting game, and we look forward to seeing how the competitors stack up.

In case of emergnecy we'll just surrender and let Dynamic play his precalculated last 100 turns.

The way I read the game conditions the deadline is 27th of June so Erkon is really asking for an extension of the time limit by one month. I think XTeam would have a hard time finishing in two weeks and would welcome an extra month also. I think a fixed, non-negotiable time limit should be made public by the organizer now so that all teams know how much time they have left.

Fredriksberg, go read the first post of this thread again. ;)
