SGOTM 14 - Ivan

Played 8 turns, and I think it's a good stopping point, not least because I managed to close my turn log without saving it, so I'll have to summarize. The save is on the server, here: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/saves/sgotm14/Ivan_SG014_AD0530_01.SAV

Note that most units have NOT moved this turn. Also note that a few units (mainly horses on our island) may be on a bit of automove. They will be heading to Babylon to upgrade there; I thought it best to wait to upgrade as we would hopefully have Leo's by then.
Highlights and lowlights:

The Greek continent and Incan continents are ours in full. I got two MGLs over the course of the campaign; those are now a full army on the Persian continent, and an empty one about to land in Egypt.

The Korean campaign has been a disaster; very quick flips slowed things down a great deal. I actually gifted Pusan to America, figuring we may go after them at some point. I did raze Seoul at least. We need some settlers in the area to reclaim land. Our remaining stack should be enough to do the job, but it's not needed anywhere else right away, so I'm letting it heal and do things right.

I gifted Bangalore to the Aztecs (a good target post-Persia).

We have the full army and ten knights in position to take Leo's Workshop next turn.

We have ROPs with all of Iroquois, Egypt, and Persia. Conveniently, this is our next trio of targets. Iroquois landing party is in place; Egypt is getting there but will need a couple more turns. Again, we have a mostly empty army about to land in Egypt.

We have a semi-convenient landing zone on the edge of Persia's continent (there was one spot on their island that their culture did not control). Be sure to get the next wave of reinforcements (or at least send units to pillage roads leading to the town) in there. There are three knights and an ACav that can be shipchained in.

We have a few settlers in position or heading into position for Greece's island. We do really really need more settlers. I would recommend that as soon as we get Leo's we make a point of rushing a couple of settlers every turn. We are not at the point where we need to shift from conquest to tile-grabbing YET, but I think that if the next couple of wars go decently, and with armies in place there is no particular reason they should not, we may be there by about the end of the next turn set.

My general plan of attack would be:

1. Make ROPs with anyone else we plan to attack (Aztecs? America?). We're about to completely blow rep because I gave Persia a lux and a few gpt for the ROP. It's going to make things go much cleaner though.

2. Take out Persia, Egypt, and Iroquois. Frankly, I'd be inclined to raze any non-wonder cities. The flips are a royal pain. Danger though, I don't recall if I gave Egypt another city. Make sure you do before you take them out. At most I would keep the last city on the continent, and use it to spam settlers.

Apologies for 1) taking so dang long; 2) managing to not save my turn log, and 3) not posting pictures.

Thanks, guys! Yes, everything is ok again. Both are back home again, the grandparents are a big help, I have still 4 days of vacation left and a bit time to finish GOTM86. What more could I ask for...? ;)

Well, looks like 690AD is the date to beat, isn't it?

Bleh. I don't know that that's possible for us, or even close to it. Best case scenario, we wipe the floor with the three civs we are about to attack, take Korea too, sew up all the loose tiles... I can't see it.

I think the better plan is to hope that they wiped out one or two opposing civs.

I think not having the ToA is hurting us badly, but nothing to be done about it right now.

Whatever. Nice to see approximate TL. To have ToA at least somwhere might be nice.
Peace with Russia, please. We need "information" if anybody is going to kill it. Gift To Egipt, Babs and Ottos (Corihuyarija, and some Inca) and take Istambul and rest of the Ottos. This Army will go to America then. Road Babylon - Nazaret ASAP. More MP in Kyoto. Wool Colony now. Temple at Braga, no reason for Aqueduct

Eldar UP

I'd suggest gifting Babs an Egyptian city (we may not want to keep one), or one of the Korean ones, since we already have a few jails in place there.

Cannot emphasize enough: we need a LOT of settlers. I think we may need to try to make do with knight production from now on and use cash to rush settlers everywhere (pretend it's a 100k game).

Got it - however I won't have time to have a proper look until tomorrow.

I checked, and Egypt too close to Babylon. Istambul at distance 40 while Egypt 30 or so. Inca much better to gift Babylons. Still have no time to make a "good look at save".
How does nerovats does?

I understand the concern about a flip, but at this point, honestly, I think we need to make do with whatever is convenient. It will go much more smoothly if we don't have to babysit another civ on the Incan island.

Maybe Iroquois-land is a good choice, though. There isn't much land there.

Hi guys. Hope you all had a good holiday season.

I will try to catch up on the reading and be a little more participatory, but I have recently started a new job and my current work commitments alone are 60+ hours a week. So I'm not sure how much time I can give to this but I'll do my best.

So, uh, did we win?

Umm, spent most of the week (unwittingly) competing against two of my team-mates here for the same VC in COTM56. How can being unemployed seem to give you less time to do things?

Sure, it is... Employment make our life more regular and also confidence helps a lot...

:bump: ka-bumoity bump bump?

Hmm, I don't want to appear impatient, but if you don't have time right now, eldar, how about switching places with the next one on the roster (nerovats)?!

Now that we have come this far, I'd like to watch, how it'll finish...

Skip me for now...

Okay - turn sets are, I imagine, around the 30mins/turn time by now with everything that needs to be thought about? That's without the hour or two I'd need to spend looking at the save, getting everything in place, etc. And discussion prior to even commencing, and anything that might come up during those turns.

I have that kind of time, just not all at once. Maybe I get 30mins to an hour a day of "really quiet" time if I'm lucky. Throwaway solo games, C/GOTMs on my own terms, I can handle as I can usually play with background "noise" (my wife, daughter, in-laws, etc.). This game I already know from the amount of analysis, complexity of situations, decisions, etc., I cannot do with that kind of "noise".

Even if I picked it up now it might take me 2-3 weeks to play 10 turns and it'd be like 1 or maybe 2 turns/day - not very efficient.

Right now I'm regretting not buying a laptop I can play Civ3 on so I could just take off to Starbucks for a couple of hours!

Well ... well... You should understand your ability earlier.
Technically in this case "nerovats up" but I have not seen him for a very long time. So I offer "Ignas up", if he is around.
I am waiting for somebody's "got it"

Whatever... Roster is:
Eldar skip
Nerovats up (formally)
Ignas will play on Saturday, 31 Jan
Lantzelot
I. Larkin
Othniel
Dwetzel -- played "recently".
