SGOTM 16 - U'nu'sual S'us'pec'ts

Checking in.

It is going to be a challenge for me just to keep up with this thread. I can't check civfanatics at work and work is busy.

Not much to add, agree with most of what has been said.
Are we skipping Oracle and building GLH and Colussus ASAP?

Does Industrious give us a bonus for building our Palace?

We do have to be careful not to accidentally win the game before there is a future tech. We will also need to be prepared to squash any AI that builds a spaceship or goes for culture. And we want to be sure we don't accidentally dominate while squashing such an AI. This is going to be tricky.

Any idea how we should plan to get enough espionage points for the required steal? Which tech should we target for the steal?

Run a few turns at 100%. Physics is probably the best if we don't mind not getting the scientist, because by then we'll have at least jails in play, and maybe even security beuraux as well.

As regards squishing AIs, we can leave them on life-support so as not to over expand, and if we go conquering the holy cities we can leave that til late in the day anyways.

Request

May I be allowed go late in the roster. I have two reasons a) my internet comes from a wireless dongle these days, so I no longer have a constant access, and b) I'm starting a new job (after four years on the dole, woohoo!) next week and want a small while to bed in there.

Edit: On second thoughts with the victories, conquest or domination would actually be easier to synchronise with the other choice. And we may want to culture rather than space, as it is easier to achieve in terms of sheer money spent. Just beeline the future tech and then turn off the science for a full push on the culture slider. It will also allow us to use Revent's preferred corporations (even Sushi on it's own can win an 1800's culture at Prince).

The barrister hired by the Committee to Explore Roster Options and Orders has been consulted and has cleared your request. The committee has so moved and your request is granted.

A provisional roster will be posted shortly.

Agreed, but even if we move the palace, Paris will always be a dynamite city.

...and I know how devious mapmakers can be, with all that forest surrounding us, we don't know what we would be moving away from. You would have to assume that a lot of teams will SIP (unless the mapmaker does something really obvious like start you on a FP next to PH Stone/Marble), therefore it would have to be a reasonable starting position. If its not there will be much muttering amongst the teams (are you reading this kcd :) )

Dammit  its hard waiting for the start save to fog gaze.

I'm reading. :) Good luck!

I have set up a provisional roster of the play order based largely on the check-in order. If you like to be moved up or down, let me know.

How long are turnsets normally? And how long do we get to play said number of turnsets? I do have other commitments this month and next month so not sure if I can spend much time. If the turnsets are long, may I be moved down please? :)

I'm happy to swap with Revent, and go second.

@ Chris, we need to commit now, before we have even opened the save. ;)

edit: turnsets are generally 10-15 turns, but the first one or two are usually longer.

Yes neil, that would be great, thanks!

Also, in a situation where an AI makes a demand at the beginning of the turn, what is the best course of action if you are not sure what to do? I'm not sure it's actually possible to save the game in the middle of an AI demand.

The plan should address the likely potential demands and describe expected responses. If something really unusual happens, a quick post to the group will often get a response from a few people while you are actually playing. If you can't get feedback in time, you make your best judgement about how to respond - and often this will mean you need to stop and upload a save after you make the response.

Settling

We don't have much information yet on what else is out there, but 2E will give minimum 8 forests to chop, but it seems to be full of plains tiles, so low yields for farms or cottages, which is what our cap will be building with so many river tiles. I believe that the tile N/NE of the settler (or 8,7 using the numpad system) is a hill I can definitely see grey under the fog.

SIP will give us 6 grassland farms three of which we can farm for early growth with later conversions to cottages. It will also give us 2 (probably 3, see above) hills allowing for decent production. And 10 forests for worker/settler chops (I've become increasingly convinced that they are by far the best investments for early chops from the capital). I also think we'll have one strategic resource inside the BFC, unless the map start is heavily edited, meaning hopefully copper or iron on one of the unforested hills.

As best I can tell, the coastal sites have a maximum of 5 forests to chop, not 8.

I can swap you with neilmeister, as he has suggested. Is that far enough down, or would you prefer to be further down the order?

25-20-15-10 for the first four mostly. Due mainly to the first few hundred years consisting of "move warrior one square. End turn" and nothing else. After that it is generally 10 turns, with some give and take on odd occasions if a suprise comes up or a project finishes just beyond the ten turns.

I fell for the west is east trap here. I ment 2W (2 to the left) rather than 2E when counting forests. My face is

1. Dropbox works fine for me as well.

2. Is it unreasonable to try and get both the oracle and the GLH. It's possible KCD gave an AI marble in which case probably yes. But the past few SGOTMs suggest that the Oracle is usually a strong play. And if we are confident in getting the GLH built and using that GM for Metal Casting we can take something else with the Oracle. Maybe even try to squeeze in a scientist first to bulb maths?

3. And I think as a serious answer we'll have quite some time to decide on victory conditions, probably until at least turn 125 a not before turn 75. A lot will depend on where the holy cities are, who it looks like might beat us with a culture/space. Also, come future tech time I hope to be in a position where we could win in a lot of ways in ~10 turns.

4. We haven't talked about the diplo part yet. The easiest way to ensure we're the SG is to have the pop/vassals to vote ourselves in. A good strategy might be to stay pretty small ourselves (so as not to trip domination) and then vassal everybody except one or two civs (so as not to trip conquest). That way we can also direct research away from the spaceship. We'll have to be very careful a vassal doesn't go for culture. Although espionage can work here.

5. Is it possible to capture corporate headquarters? I'd assume yes, but I don't think I've ever actually done it.

Yes. I managed once in a game, long time ago on a computer far, far dead.

That should be fine. Thank you :)

The roster has been updated accordingly. I presume everyone else is happy with the order.

So where is Chris going to move the warrior? :)
