[BTS] SGOTM 26 - Home Slices

Silverfur will be size 2 around the time its fur is improved.
Silver mine can wait.

Fursilver has 4 food sources and 2 commerce tiles.
Every single forest in the northwest can be chopped into it outside its borders if it needs production.

I don't see how it is a trap if we wait until workboat + worker + sailing is in place before settling it.

Cow city after 3 improvements can afford to lose a worker.
At size 4 it can work the new seafood, and at size 5 it can work deer.

Capital with 4 improvements can work the forest plains at size 5 just fine.
Yes, I agree with all that. What I mean by Trap City, is not that that’s a bad city, it’s just that there might be an equal or better city closer. In other words, the map maker might’ve lured us with that nice city to settle it and regret it later. If we explore the south around the same time, we don’t risk settling silver too late, right?

Anyway, t13 Canal we can still get t22 Myst, t26 monu, t32 Sail, wb2 done, 5h OF into galley, done ~t39.

Meanwhile, Science could build a wkr if needed south and a wb could soon follow. It’s not that we need to rush to settle down south, we just rush to know where to settle.

The other problem with Silver city is only 1 new resource, though like you said, Kait, lots of sushi. ;) I’d like to know if stone or marble is around.

To me, the most critical factor for Canal is when its border pops. That can be t34 if we settle Canal now. About the same as PR. So we might be 8h shy on the wb but 1t or more ahead on AH, Myst, and Sail.

This.

We might find a glorious site that we'd want to settle ASAP (think stone-pig-marble-wet corn-3 gold ). Or we might meet an AI or 3 to give us an idea of our neighbors. I don't think making Canal be self-sufficient is too big a price to pay.

This sounds appealing. Can you upload a save (or send your MM)? What did you build in Science during the 2 turn delay to Mysticism?
Definitely. Let me optimize it a bit more first. 1-turn delay on Myst. T26 monu! (I wrote t27 above)

If we do send wb#1 (or any wb for that matter) exploring, I assume it will go south and then west (west is away from SB, LC! haha) to explore that direction, correct?
Of course, onward if possible. That’s the whole point. He won’t show us the inner tiles of S land...

Interestingly, I never mess up north and south.

Well, the other option would be to go south and then east. This would tell us if south is part of our continent or a new one. The problem is that the boat could get blocked by SB culture and have to turn around. So my main question was whether the wb should go east or west.

Do you confuse left and right? Or do you put your thumb and forefinger at right angles to each other and see which one looks like an "L"?

Maybe we should use nautical directions (i.e. port, starboard, etc.) in our thread from now on to avoid confusion!! It would be very important to know which direction a unit is facing though.

we probably should have considered more closely on T5
Let's not 2nd guess ourselves here. We could have found an amazing spot just beyond Canal (2 food in the first ring? pre-improved tiles? who knows), so we chose to scout first and come back to canal.
It could have been a huge mistake by other teams missing out on something better than Canal.
And we calculated that the minor headstart in Canal is a wash with the loss to research, so I'm happy with what we did. I'm still on the fence whether to settle now or later. Probably now since we already feel 'behind'. We are certainly not going to settle anywhere else in that area now that we've scouted it fully. And we're not going to miss out on this location. Take it and eat the damage it does to research in the short term.

Should we weight sushi heavily in our city site choices?
I don't think we have to let it affect us too much. We should be able to get resources from the AI. It's best if we don't Orphan too much seafood, but if we leave a spot for the AI to settle, we still can get them in trade. Like if SB settled the 2clams southeast of our capital. (Not sure he'd do that after we settle canal, but you get the idea)
(think stone-pig-marble-wet corn-3 gold ).
Think bigger (pre-improved tiles -- pay the extra dist maintenance for pre-farmed/pre-mined tiles? YES!)

There has also been talk of the Mids but I'm not sure that this is considered "cheaper hammer costs" ;)

Getting the Oracle can be tough unless you self-tech PH at a fairly early date. Getting CS from it is even harder. It would be nice for sure. Would we even consider it without marble (or Mids without stone)?

Oracle civil service in Canal city is a little tempting if we can bulb math
Don't forget, we have 7 cities and each AI has one. And this is not Deity.
I would think we can get Oracle-> CS if we want it without bulbing math. (or Oracle Education?)
What turn does it normally go (on ice age)?
btw, I think we have to try to build Mids. Alternatively, I was looking into beeline Constituion so we can have REP without mids, but it seems sketchy. I think you'd want to bulb Nationalism (Merchant) in this case. I've done this beeline before in an attempt to get Jails for Espionage victory.
We don't need Constitution for Biology beeline, but we do need it for Sushi. so it's not a detour or extra tech.
