SGOTM 9 - Bede

The two red arrows mark where I would see 2 possible future cities. First I would move archer on mount south for recon. Water shall not be far to the east from there. I would settle both cities on the coast in the east to make our seafaring nation an early naval power. Good tiles there. However madvikings idea S S SW is also very good. I think we can manage to arrange all three cities, if we play tight pack CxxC, but I think access to the sea has priority

My two cents (which, all things considered, is worth less than one cent) is that N E E is preferable to the northern site you marked (S E E). If that is another inland lake, as I suspect, it will at least give us mobility with two canal cities. If it actually IS the sea - well, that speaks for itself.

If we are going to leave the floodplain for the Indians, as has been suggested, we might as well pop that goody hut. Even if it sprouts barbs, our Warrior will be on a mountain tile.

Anyone want to give this idiot a quick lesson on how to get a ss up? its holding up the game.

*edit* nmon that,

so where we want 2nd city at?

any advice on getting my ss's smaller would be nice.

You have to work them with a graphic software. At least "MS paint" should be available, however you can only cut with it and not resize. Better would be Paint shop, Corel Draw or something like that wher you can set size by percentage.
Anyhow I think in the east is the ocean - I am still convinced of my advice: E / SE /SE /SE - but, do you have installed the SGOTM ressource modpack? What benefits do the ressources around Delhi show up in your game? They look like normal game ressources and not like rocks, oysters and sheeps. I would recommend to go to the SGOTM reference thread to download.

@ madviking, sorry I misunderstood, you typed N/N/E in your first post, but o.k. there is water so I should have been aware that you meant another location. It is o.k., but I think for later on - 5th to 6th city due to the smaller groth potential.

downloaded the little graphics mod they suggested. must be that my default terrain is Rhye's terrain.

Going to wait another hour for more input on 2nd city's placement then I will continue with or without it.

O.K. I was just asking because of growth calc - the tile E/E/SE of Trondy was a sheep in my game, giving 2food 1 shield, can you check these values in your game please?

done, I just forgot to put the graphics mod in my scen folder like they said to do. I put it there and everything is as it should be.

lurker's comment: Paint can "Stretch/Skew" in the Image menu (at least in the version on my clapped out Win98se system). Selecting that option gives you facilities to change horizontal and vertical dimensions by a percentage. Use a figure under 100% to reduce the image size.

Send the settler east to the coast E-NE-NE and settle on the plains. That will give us a canal I think. If it doesn't post another screen shot and we can look at it again.

@bazh, I use Irfanview to do the picture books that are my logs. Works quietly in the background and you can add text, crop and resample to get right sized pictures.

2750 BC, Mongols have appeared. They start with Pottery. If I get pottery from them in the initial trade, do I declare war or are we going for the expansion/cities first?

NO WAR!!!!

We need to get our towns down and building the right stuff. Then think about beating on the neighbors. I would like to see a really fast tech pace overall and that doesn't happen when you get into always war mode.

And don't give away the farm just for a pot to pee in, there are more nations on the map with pottery. Let's make some more friends first unless he will give it away.

*Notes*
Sent Settler to the current spot to expand toward the mongols and the dye's. Next player can settle in spot to maintain cxxc or move to a better spot. Curraghs are exploring the edge of our continent in hopes of making new contacts. I expect Gandhi to have MM soon and to land some troops near us to try and smack us around for my refusal to make peace. Research is currently heading toward Monarchy. Our Income should improve after our
3rd city is founded.

Here's the save since I forgot to add it to my turnlog.

The map surprises continue. Our "ocean" may be nothing of the kind. Note how the Sea spaces curve back 2E of our Northern Curragh. Anyone for a suicide Curragh? Similarly, the body of water that the floodplain empties into may not be much larger than what we can see.
Looking at the world map in the start post, there probably isn't anything worth mentioning south of the ridge line, so our attention must lean west.
Only two luxuries in sight so far. Anyone else worried?

Roster check:

Crakie - up
madviking - on deck
crazybeard
Bede
classical_hero - on holiday
Marc Aurel - got us started
Bahzell - found the sea

@Bahz, don't forget to go the SGOTM Submissions page and upload your saave to the server for scoring purposes. Here is the link: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/submit/sgotm.php.

I took care of it this time so the score table now inlcudes our latest save.

I was out this weekend but I got the save.

Some thoughts :

I think we are in a critical situation (what will continue for many turns; delicate quest we have!)

1. India is powerful, due to their ressources. Our advantage is that they are not able to found cities for another couple of turns. However we have to use our advantage to the extend to be able to keep India under control when they get MM. This would mean growth is first priority. In Despotism we need to build all cities close to the capitol - if not they are only corrupt and we have lost economic and growth potential. So I recommend first to fill up the ring around Trondy with cities to get economic potential.

2. Where exact did we meet the Mongols? Were they able to contact India? If so, they start trading immediatly and we have lost quite much of terrain. If we can avoid this we should do so I think. We have to be prepared for war in any case (with India), so we need the units no matter what we do with Mongolia. If the Mongols can be kept away from India I also recommend to keep peace as long as possible - if not we should fight a defensive war against them - the distance to the Mongolian center seems large enough to make peace when their stack arrives or to build up an own stack of archers, that in other times guards the shore against Indian landings.

3. I have noticed three gaps in the ridge where the terrain is not mouintain, but hills - there India can build cities to get out of their swimming pool. We should position a warrior there, or better a spearman, when we have researched BW after Mon or got it in trade.
