SGOTM 9 - Bede

It is dot map time. I've put together a few

Near North

We need to kick out settlers and workers and garrrison troops, in that order. No regular archers or even spears and hold off on any buildings (other than a granary maybe in the two towns with the food bonuses)

"Differential naval movement" is on, so don't be afraid to push the curraghs into the sea or even ocean for further exploration, If they sink, they sink.

The Monarchy Slingshot is a high risk strategy because of the time it will take to research the pre-reqs. Here's hoping it works.

Gandhi doesn't even know Writing yet, so Map Making is still a ways off for him.

I concur with Mason about the gaps, but will we have two units to spare before India gets Map Making? Much less the time to walk them out there.

Which brings me to something else we should be considering. How good will the AI be at exploiting their position? Do they have Worker of Settler units waiting for the ships to be built some day? India doesn't really have any choice but to work food tiles (at least until Delhi expands once more), so we should see a 6-pop Delhi before too long. How will the AI keep from civil disorder? Or should I say, how well will they?

@Mason: I suspect we're going to be in a delicate situation right through the time the Space Race starts in earnest. Although it occurs to me that, if we reach that stage with only us and India left standing, all we have to do to fulfill the victory conditions is not build Spaceship parts.

To whom it may concern: I acknowledge I'm in way over my head here, so I'm commenting on anything that strikes me as interesting. Feel free to tell me to go sit in a corner and keep quiet.

Alrighty, here are my 20 turns:

Pre-flight: Set governor to "Emphasize production". For those who never did that: upon growth the new born citizen immediately gets to work and you actually get those shields. This does not work for commerce or food, so always emphasize production (default for new cities too) at the start of a game. In this case the worker in Bergen will finish 1 turn earlier

2110 BC Settle Copenhagen, protect with warrior, set to product worker. North-east curragh reveals possible crossing.

2070 BC Bergen worker -> archer. Northeast curragh crosses ocean.

2030 zzz

1990 The latest worker starts irrigating the Trondheim cow

1950 zzz

1910 Northeast warrior finds a mongol city. The archer in the proximity of the Northwest warrior starts to return home

1870 northwest warrior spots brown borders

1830 The curragh that crossed the ocean finds that it's just a small island.

1790 northwest warrior touches the brown borders but does not see a city or unit. Fortunately, shift-d shows Carthage. No trades because mysticism will come in next turn and I do not want to give out writing. Trondheim archer -> Settler

1750 Wheel + Pott + 20 gold from Mongols (for Myst). Masonry + BW + 6 gold from Carthage (for Myst + Wheel). Research max (-3 gpt) to poly

Trondheim to finish a settler, Bergen to granary.

1725 A barb appears, the returning archer will intercept

1700 Barb killed, off to find the camp

1675 zzz

1650 Trondheim settler -> granary. Mongols and Carthage have IW and HBR and are willing to trade for writing, but I hold off as I do not want to put the monarchy slingshot in danger.

1625 Archer attacks camp and cashes 25 gold for our research deficit.

1600 Found Reyjavik. I did not see Bede's dotmap, but it's New City 13. A worker has been working to water that food bonus in the long run.

1575 Northeast curragh spots orange borders

1550 Meet ottomans. We are up Alph + Pott. Trade Alph + 10 g for a slave

1525 zzz

1500 Mongols started writing, because they will no longer trade it for IW + HBR. Carthage will however (perhaps they are doing math?). Poly due in 12 turns. India still doesn't know writing.

Summary: Presumably, we met all the neighbours on our continent. Three core cities have a food bonus, I propose to give them all a granary and build settlers + workers with them. Other cities can provide the military. In addition to our incense there are ivory and dyes, but they are quite far away. I think we should trade IW + HBR for writing to Carthage while we still can, within a couple of turns.

Note: the slave is chopping near Reykjavik, make sure the shields are put to good use (I say granary).

Well done Crakie. Thanks for your advice on the 'emphasise production' gouvernor. Think I'm just doing the final steps on the ladder to master demigod. But I 'm thinking you should look after the ressouces modpack for SGOTM looking at your screeni - the sheep at Trondy-E-E-SE is missing there.

Aren't we supposed to play 10 turns after the first 20? :hmm:

Generally, that's the pattern. But Cappy Bede has asked us all to do 20 turns in the first round.

Please remember to upload the save to the server here: http://gotm.civfanatics.net/submit/sgotm.php.

Then you can copy the link to your log (see the instructions on the page)

MV - up as soon as Crakie gets the save in the right place

From Crakie's ss, we can be assured that Gandhi and Genghis are talkin to each other now. So its a safe bet that if Gandhi wasn't researching writing, that he'll have it soon from Genghis after he gets it from the Ottomans.

@Bede thanks for uploading the save for me. I won't forget next time. On your purposed new city 3, how about we leave that area to Gandhi so he can have a second city or are we just going to keep Gandhi on his Island Resort?

After we get Monarchy, where we heading next with our Research? We heading toward Mapmaking or BW & IW for better defense and offense?

BW and IW we can buy. I would make a run at Lit.

After a lookie at the map I think we keep Gandhi on Fantasy Island for just as long as we can. He will bust out sooner or later with a settlement across the mountains to the NW but I don't think we need to help him, his capitol is a commerce and population monster (just what we need for a spaceship planner) so let him develop it it the max.

We can start planning the Great Library coup, though: location and how, let's have some thoughts.

I'm thinking ships and swords and kill everyone to help India.
Then Berserk the other continent, capture no cities, let India expand (being that Ghandi and us are going to be the last ones).

(got it)

@mv, the file on the server is still 2150. Crakie's set ended in 1500. Just make sure you play the right one, beginning at 1500.

We need to keep the AI cartel going. That means not killing everyone, buttrimming them back a little and trying to seed the Indians into captured towns. Otherwise the tech pace will slow to a crawl and we will be waiting until the "end is near" before a lone Monarch AI researches the SS techs.

I strongly support Bedes opinion to research Lit. The AI nearly never researches Lit. So we can start GLib, maybe with prebuild, and after we are still able to sell Lit. BW and IW we can buy. I also agree to keep Gandhi on his island. He is powerful enough with his Mega-commerce and food. As I said before, we should let the AI's live. War only to get our Great Leader and vanish to the other continent we should hurry to find by now. What a pity, that the only oversea land so far was an island.

BTW Bede, I 'm not able to see your maps. but judging Bahz comment, I think he can. -what's going on?

Argh! I forgot to install the SGOTM modpack, even after putting it prominently on my desktop. What should we do?

NO problem I think, we can move on since we have had no advantage of this, but also have not lost anything so far. India has lost, but they keep up later on in a rush. But let's hear Bede and AlanH about this.

India didnt loose anything.. it is just a graphics modpack.. the resources is there, you just cant see them if you dont have modpack installed.

You'll have to play on. Your save is OK. You just couldn't see some resources because you haven't installed the resource graphics as specified in the first post here, in the Maintenance Thread first post, and in the Reference Thread.

How can I put this more clearly: PLEASE make sure you read and understand the team briefing post at the top of this thread.

I sense a bit of frustration there, Alan. Well, probably rightly so. I am an idiot and I apologize.
