SGOTM6 - Team tao

Well done, thou Taoists (is that the correct collective noun for your team ?).

We have been watching ... and waiting ... and watching ... and waiting ... with keen interest for two weeks now as you folk meticulously crafted your way to an excellent finish TWO turns ahead of us. Reading your posts, I suspect that you all are as sick of micromanagement as we are.

Once again, congratulations on a fine finish.

 Well done Tao - that sure was exciting.
You had an incredible amount of patience at the end, I've been :bounce:
for two weeks now waiting for you to get on with it.
Well done :goodjob:

I've been reading your thread, Peanuts, and I can't believe how well you did without free granaries. Kudos. You had a lot of terrific ideas, too. *steals them all* ;)

@ the rest of the team: Who is planning on playing SGOTM7?

Me. Even though I never did AWD (and especially on a small map) before. And certainly not with the Mongols and their late UU. This should be interesting.

Me too. And I've certainly never even thought about considering the possibility of AWD, and certainly never done it before!

And thank you Peanuts, I certainly kept you waiting over the last couple of weeks - yes it really did take nearly 2 weeks to play a preturn and 2 further turns! I've not had chance to read the other threads yet other than a quick glance - I'm certainly looking forward to it!

:hatsoff: Congratulations on your fine effort, and beating us be two turns! I think I would :suicide: if I MM'd that much!

Xteam is making a mad rush to 100K, and their projected time is within a couple of turns of your final date! It's interesting that these three games are very close at the 100K mark; for a larger map, we would have been much further behind, but for a smaller map, our approach might do better.

I'll definitely be playing, too. AWD, though!

<-- is skeered ;)

As for XTeam --- anyone got any "massive AI dogpile" voodoo dolls?

Excellent news to start the new day. :goodjob: You and Keath really really deserve a lot of praise. IMHO the
GoldMedal.gif
goes to Keath because not only did he do a full ten turns of this "nightmare", but he also conquered us The Pyramids and Sun Tzu's!
It is very nice of you to bestow such an honour on me but I really only did five plus turns and Furiey had the patience to meticulously bring home more culture than I ever thought possible. She should get any accolades but better yet, the whole team deserves to share equally. :hatsoff:

The Pyramids and SunTzu's were just a matter of the luck of the turn. Surprisingly those turns were somewhat tainted for me by the 'blue screen of death' when Civ crashed and I had to replay the palace jump. Up until that time I was still getting my bearings as to how to execute ten turns and not make some horrendous blunder. Then, if your remember, I was the one who made the deal that spoiled our rep with the Japanese iron deal. How much did this goof cost us, I wonder?

I have to admit, though, that those last turns were very mind altering and quite exhausting. Today, 3 weeks after I got this virus, I am still not fully recovered and I rarely ever get colds or flubugs.

So am I up for another game? Yes! That is if the team can stomach my dark sense of humour and accept my 'still learning the basics' handicap. :D

Where do you find out the details for AWD and playing Mongols on a small map? All War Diety!!?? What punishment is this?? :crazyeye:

I'm actually playing COTM11 as always war. (Yes, it's Regent, now hush.) So I'll be prepared. *cough*

I'm glad you're all coming back for more, too. So glad mad-bax put me on this team! You've all been great to play with.

Just for information. The Jason best date for 100K is 1270AD for Vanilla/PTW and 1385AD for conquests (not 1375AD as I told someone recently ). I'm not sure if this means anything however.
Does anybody else think that this is perhaps the wrong way round given the power of the agricultural trait in C3C? Perhaps the Jason system needs to be tweaked a little.

I'd like to echo this. I didn't have the best of experiences with the previous SGOTM so this was a real pleasure. Thanks everyone!

Well, it's been a while since I've lost a game so I think I'll make an AW stab at the GOTM to gain some painful lessons on what we shouldn't do. ;)

I can only think of one major advantage of vanilla, and that's the ability to develop two independent strong cores. Maybe that had something to do with it. In a normal game without such an amazing abundance of food and rivers at the start, and where poprushing would be much less of a factor, maybe that'd make a difference.

@Sabre: GOTM42? Should be ... interesting .... I still haven't fully qualified for the first COTM11 spoiler (not that I've been doing anything useful like keeping notes, anyway), so all I can say on that score is that I'm not dead yet. :p

I must admit I haven't tried Communism in C3C, but from what I've heard it's supposed to be excellent for large empires. That plus agricultural I would have thought would have outweighed 2 cores. But I don't suppose Jason takes into account the limitations we were playing under, just the situation in a normal game.

I have a vague recollection that I read somewhere that communism is not quite so bad in PtW than in Vanilla (probably read it yesterday with my memory :) ). Can anyone confirm this?

We (the Peanuts) used PtW and made the mistake of revolting to communism.
The result? All our towns, including the capital, had max corruption only pruducing one good shield and one commerce. I don't know how it could be any worse than that. Needless to say we revolted back to despotism straight away.
Here's a link to the post.

So two turns wasted on revolting and two turns you beat us by

I never tried Communism in PTW either after trying it once in Vanilla. My experience then was not as bad as this time though. At least we avoided changing until we could afford to, although the way it turned out we could have changed a few turns earlier - once the cities had their cultural improvements, set them to wealth then to an Explorer the turn before growth so there is a shield in the box to allow a rush.

Mathilda - if you changed by the big picture (and from your log it looks like you did) you don't actually lose any culture that turn. We checked as we revolted to Communism. And yes we were also at 1 shield, 1 commerce per city.
