SGOTM6 - Xteam

We are currently weak versus both Babylon and American, even with England and strong to the rest, if that helps. So far, since making peace with France, no one has even looked in our direction, which has been good. Haven't built any military units except for drafted rifles that I've disbanded as culture builders.

Built 9 towns and have another hour or two before the 1250 AD turn is ready to turn over to WillowBrook, hopefully in the morning but certainly by early evening.

I think over the 5 turns, the average is right on 66 cpt/turn gain. I starting to make mistakes, so it is off to  to dream about 20 shields per citizen and per Rifle disbanded and why it takes soooo long to get a University????

I sure hope WillowBrook can average 100 cpt gains in her turn so I don't see this one again. I'm ready to go back to warmongering!!! :p :D

Can't help there, but I have another plan. :scan: :mischief: Let's infect their save with a virus that lets us play the Babs in their game. We'll get a ROP, walk all the Bab units into their territory, and take them out in one turn. :mischief:  :crazyeye:

@Leif: looking forward to the save!
Edit: but I can make no promises of 100 cptpt. :crazyeye:

I have gone as far as I intended to go but, in writing up the After Action Report, came upon some questions that I think we need to discuss and the answers will determine when I pass this on to WillowBrook.

I did not join any workers during my turns, except one by a misclick that I did not use to rush anything, yet! :mischief: I have completed the 1250AD turn but have rushed only about 40 culture points thus far. We could get to 60 or more if we join workers to some cities. So, the question is, do we want to do this and is it in the spirit of the rules to do so? If so, do you want me to do this or pass it to Willowbrook? How do you feel about it WillowBrook?

Second, I had another thought. Many of our cities are starting to suffer from draft and rush unhappiness. I have built some Aqueducts to allow some of the happier cities to reach size 7 so we can draft Rifles, which are really necessary in inland cities to rush Libraries and Cathedrals. However, most cities may be more useful in prducing Settlers which can be joined to cities to speed pop rushing. There is a built in penalty of 2 citizens to pop rushing settlers, so I think this would be a good way to speed us along. But is it within the spirit of the rules? :mischief:

Mad-bax posted this in the maintainance thread:

As regards joining workers. Joining workers with the specific intention of increasing population to the point where it enables the whipping of a specific improvement is an exploit and not allowed. Joining workers for other reasons is OK though (e.g. increasing a towns pop to size 7 to get the additional defence bonus). Setting a hard and fast rule would only get me into trouble again so I'll leave it like this.

Looks like Gyathaar beat me to the quote. Here's my interpretation:

I expect that joining settlers for the purpose of pop-rushing would also be bad (so we should build towns with them). As for our workers, I think if we add no more than one to any given town when a town is a least two turns away from being able to pop the next improvement (after the worker join), that would be fine. Also, for the very unhappy towns, adding workers to turn them into tax collectors would be find, as far as I can tell.

Edit: (I'm not sure if a double post would be appropriate here, but I don't want anyone to accuse us of artificially running up the post count. :p )

I was looking back on the discussion of the GOTM 39 100k cultural wins, and it looks like Klarius and Jove merged their existing workers for the purpose of drafting and/or pop-rushing, but didn't build any for that purpose. It doesn't appear that this conduct was condemned by the GOTM staff (they both finished in the top ten).

Here's the conversation:
Klarius' first post doesn't mention workers.
Then Jove asks:
-I had 268 workers to join and draft when I really got into it, but never built workers specifically for the purpose of drafting, thinking that was illegal. I really didn’t start joining them until 1140, as there was so much work to do. Maybe I should’ve had more. Would it have been legal to build workers for the sole purpose of drafting?
-I was tempted to move my palace to the Northern Islands to take advantage of the Rank Corruption bug, but thought that too was illegal. Is it?
@Klarius: Did you do these things? (I’m not accusing you of anything, I’m just curious )
And Klarius' less-than-clear reply was:
I jumped the palace into former Roman land so a nice double core.
I used the workers I had and didn't build a single worker after I started merging.
I also don't see a benefit of this. If you draft at size 7 always and have enough food there is no need for merging.
And it appears no one else addressed the issue.

I personally think that merging and drafting or popping existing workers/slaves should be fine, as long as no more workers are built once this starts. But Mad-Bax's interpretation appears to forbid this. And as far as I know, there's no one to appeal the ruling to....

I don't think we can take the conversation between Jove and Klarius as a prcededent. M-B will have his own views on what's legal and what isn't.

Pretty well all our towns are rushing and/or drafting, so M-B's ruling implies that we can't join a worker to a town, and we certainly can't build a worker or a settler with the express intent of joining it in another town that's pop rushing or drafting. The only options, once we've completed railing and irrigation, are for them to lean on their shovels for the rest of the game, or to join towns where we are no longer rushing/drafting, or to be disbanded for 2 shields a piece.

maybe this is what team tao has been posting so furiously over. :hmm: perhaps one of their players did add workers and then pop/draft the cities and they're trying to figure out what to do. :mischief:

There is still plenty of work for them to do in the former French zone, so that is not a real problem. And there are a lot of new towns that will soon be ready to start popping out Libraries and Cathedrals, once they get Temples, of course... :D

Perhaps I should hand it over to WillowBrook and see if she can find anything I missed, and due to my MM skills, that may be 100 culture points??

We are at a point in the game where Settlers are easy to pop out. I think I've rushed another 11 in the 1250AD turn so far but left some cities to grow to size 7 so we can draft.

EDIT Just to clarify, if the city is size 5, I rushed a Settler, if it was size 6 and could grow to 7, I left it so we could draft. BTW - @WillowBrook, you will fnd a number of cities with Aqueducts or Markets rushed, please feel free to change anything you like to suit what you think you'll need.

I think we'll need to think about what our priorities should be, Aqueducts to get cities to size 7, Markets to keep them happy so we can draft longer; of course, by the time both are built the game should be close to being over, or something else. Cannons are good for 10 shields when disbanded so can be used to hurry Temples along, or perhaps we rush reg Rifles to disband along with the drafted ones. It stinks to have to wait for inland cities to get to size 6 before you can pop a Library or a Cathedral when all you need is 20 shields to get you over that middle hump.

size 6? you just need size 4..
rush explorer, rush longbow
wait till size 4, rush library or cathedral...

or with size 2:
rush explorer, rush longbow
disband rifle, and rush library or cath at size 2

The only options, once we've completed railing and irrigation, are for them to lean on their shovels for the rest of the game, or to join towns where we are no longer rushing/drafting, or to be disbanded for 2 shields a piece.

Can't we join them to zero growth wealth cities and make taxmen out of them?

We'll be all done in less than 30 turns. I suggest we keep on our current path. Investing in aqueducts and markets is too long term. They would take minimum of 10 turns to build, leaving only about 10 more turns to take any advantage from them. Some turns just are lower in cpt/turn - that's the way it goes. You've created extra settlers this time around, which is good, and we'll make up the culture again during the next sequence.

That was my second option :hmm:

It's a moot point if they are all still busy developing France. But there's no point in adding workers to a city that doesn't have food for them, since we've established we can't pop rush them out as shields. Any zero-growth city we added workers to would be one that we've constrained to be so, and could reconfigure to include them to create extra income.

If we end up adding workers to cities to get more taxmen.. we should prolly rename them somehow to avoid accidenty poprushing them later? (perhaps add a 'j' infront of the city-name)

I did some projections on enddate depending on different rushrates from 1240AD on:

34cptpt: 1405AD
39cptpt: 1400AD
45cptpt: 1395AD
52cptpt: 1390AD
59cptpt: 1385AD
68cptpt: 1380AD
78cptpt: 1375AD

Winning in 1380AD instead of 1385AD seems the most realistic goal to me atm.. :D

Yes, I know that now but I didn't when I started! When one doesn't do the intermediate steps, then one waits, as I learned. That's what happens when you have a rookie trying to do this....

Again, please feel free to change whatever you need to speed things up.

After Action Report:
There are only about 40 culture points per turn increase in the turn thus far. Most new cities are not ready yet and other cities require a Rifle to complete the rush because there is nothing to rush. Coastal cities can use ship builds but inland cities cannot and I ran out of Rifles. There is a stack of workers near Glevum 2 unmoved as there isn’t shipping needed to move them to France as I used it for Settlers and I didn’t want to tie them up on you chopping jungle. There are also some workers and a Settler in Xi’an awaiting transport, along with 1 Galleon. But there are also a number of Settler builds that will complete on the interturn.

I did not use the joining of workers to complete rushes as I thought, from our discussion, we weren’t doing this. However, if we decide join workers to cities; Lindum 2 can build a Cathedral with 3 workers, Brest can build a Cathedral with 2 workers, Hadrumeten can build a Cathedral with 3 workers and a disbanded Warrior, Rutupiae could build a Cathedral with 2 workers and a disbanded unit, Cadiz could build a Library with 2 workers and there are other examples. I think we need to join workers to complete builds in order to keep the culture race going at our desired speed.

We are currently at –140 gpt with 6440 Gold in the Treasury, a comfortable amount for the time being. France will give us 4 gpt for some more lux if we trade with them. Other deals will come up in the next 5 turns:
America for 17 gpt for silks in 4 turns and ROP for 2 gpt in 5 turns.
Babylon for 24 gpt for incense next turn.
Vikings for 15 gpt for spices and dyes in 4 turns.
Carthage for ROP in 5 turns, they won’t purchase anything.
India 23 for 23 gpt for furs, incense, spices and wool in 6 turns.

Electicity is due in 9 turns and I sent some workers down to the south to rail around the Lindum 2 and Mountain Hideaway area to prepare for irrigation.

The score curve is also taking an interesting twist, have a look.

Good luck and keep the culture coming. Good luck... :)

Don't forget the SAVE

1380 AD or 1385 AD - either would be a good date IMHO. I can't see Peanut finishing by then. They are at 84,000 now, and have 7 turns to go before 1385 AD. They would need to change up a gear from about 1400cpt to over 2000cpt. It's not going to happen. My guess is they'll finish in 1400 AD earliest.

Peanut are the current competition, BTW, no point in nuking tao. The dark horses are Row and Live and Ivan. They both still have time to switch on a high cpt rate, and both would launch from a higher culture baseline than we had when we started.
