SGOTM7 - Team tao

The final turnlog, in all its unedited glory.

450 AD (preturn): Move the six knights to Bingol and the empty galleys to Pasargadae. I think I'm going to go after a few of the small islands. Set a couple of galleys to finish along the east coasts and will work on getting as many knights to them as I can in the next 3-4 turns. We have plenty of knights; the attrition hasn't really hurt us at all. Switch Incense Hill to settler; may as well prepare to grab that coast tile to the west of the town in case it proves useful.

Attack sword on mountain west of Uppsala.
vet retreats. elite wins (1)
Move stack of knights to the mountain.
Stop the workers by Bingol; we need a road across the island more than another irrigation.

IT: Persian immortal goes right past our stack on the mountain. Pasargadae library-settler. Alexmanika galley-galley. Diriyah library-settler. Hlobane library-settler. Izmit knight-knight, Aydin knight-knight, Antalya knight-knight, Cowtown N knight-knight. Istanbul pike (we didn't need it)-wealth. Adana settler-settler. Kafa library-wealth. Salonika galley-galley.

460 AD (1) Tiles to domination: 127
Bomb a couple of boats and the immortal.
Attack on Arbela:
Cats go 1 for 3
Knight retreats, knight wins, axeman wins and we take the city. (3) Move in the other axe and the wounded units for the interturn.
Kill the immortal with a knight (4)

Drop off 8 knights by Mpondo, sink Arab boat (5)

Settle Kirklareli north of Denizli, start library. Rush library in Zonguldak, settler in Persepolis. Sell a few libraries that have done their jobs to allow me to rush another galley.

IT: Axeman attacks us on iron mountain by Linkoping and loses (6) Persepolis settler-settler. GL knight-knight, Uskudar settler-settler. AI Bait galley-wealth. Epulu knight-knight. Ankara galley-galley. Zonguldak library-wealth.

470 AD (2) 107 tiles to domination
Switch Alexmanika to library. Bomb a Persia galley.

Attack on Mpondo.
knight wins, knight wins and we capture the city, also sinking a galley. (Does that count as a kill? I'm going to say it does; I have catching up to do :p ) (9)

Arbela lost three resistors last turn, and Mpondo only has two; we may not need to raze either town. We'll see. Rush settler in Zimbabwe, Upsala. Sink Persia galley (10)

Attack on Linkoping.
knights lose, win, win and we capture the city (12)

IT: Vikings land three units by Linkoping. Sogut knight-knight. Zimbabwe settler-wealth. New Calcutta knight-knight. Dang, I screwed up at Uppsala; it was set to starve and now isn't big enough to finish the settler. Jungle Port galley-galley.

480 AD (3) 89 tiles to domination
That was actually two Viking axemen and an Indian spear by Linkoping. Mpondo and Arbela are out of resistance. Rush one last galley and a library in Arbela. No attacks this turn.

IT: Both Axemen attack Linkoping; one wins, one loses. (13) Bapedi galley-wealth. Arbela library-wealth. GL knight-knight. Aydin knight-knight. Antalya knight-knight. Cowtown S knight-knight. South Beach settler-wealth. Desert Beach galley-wealth.

490 AD (4) 69 tiles to domination.
Rush library in Mpondo, Bingol. Attack axeman by Linkoping and win (14) Found Karabuk east of Mpondo. Found Cankiri up by Hlobane for lack of anything better to do with a settler. Attack the spear by Linkoping and win (15). Ready to land on other Viking island next turn. Ready to land on first of the small islands next turn as well I think. Switch several knight builds to marketplaces, not that they'll finish, but I think we have plenty of knights.

IT: Golden age ends. Izmit knight-market. Mpondo library-settler. Incense Hill settler-wealth. Resistance ends in Linkoping. Bingol library-settler.

500 AD (5) 56 tiles to domination.

Switch Karabuk to harbor. Rush library in Linkoping. Now at 152gpt. Land units by Delhi and San Francisco. Land units on iron hill by Nidaros. Abandon Incense Hill and found Iskenderun one tile west. Abandon Susa and found Tunceli one tile north. Disband a bunch of catapults; rush settler in Pasargadae. Found Sivas SE of Uppsala.

IT: Sword attacks out of San Francisco and loses against our knight. (16) No attack from the Vikings. We get education, our final tech from the Great Library. Good thing we don't need any more, because I've sold off most of our libraries. :p Sogut knight-knight. Pasargadae settler-settler. Linkoping library-wealth.

510 AD (6) 47 tiles to domination.

Rush library in Kirklareli.

Attack on San Francisco
two knights defeat two spears, capture the city. (18)

Attack on Delhi
only one defender, our knight wins, capture the city (19) Move settlers into position and abandon Delhi; found Yozgat to the southeast.

Attack on Nidaros (I know I don't have enough units here, but it's the end game!) 10 knights go in, four come out. (23) Looks like 2-3 units left in the city, nothing stronger than a vet axeman (although a redlined elite pike will presumably be back for more). Land a bunch more knights. Land a settler and a sword NW of Chicago; let's see if they last. No enemy units visible except a worker.

IT: Two axemen attack our stack by Nidaros, both lose. (25) Persians want to talk; bite me Xerxes. Various builds finish; the only one of note is the library in Kirklareli.

520 AD (7) 25 tiles!

Nidaros again.
knight retreats. next one wins, one after that loses. Vikings sure do like to promote, don't they. Next one retreats. Next one wins. next one retreats. The only axeman in the stack wins, and we capture the city. (28) Since there's no settler around, I'll try to keep it for the next turn. That's 11 tiles.

Attack on Baghdad.
Both knights win (30), and we capture the city and nine more tiles. And wipe out the Arabs, who *almost* made it alive to the end of the game. :D

Settle Tokat north of Yozgat for eight more tiles and Van NW of Chicago for another nine. The archer to the north will be too late.

I count five more tiles coming on the interturn, making 40, which should put us well over the top unless something flips or unless we've missed a landmass somewhere. Save game here. Rush a cheap defender in Van just in case and one last library just because I can. Also land by Swazi, since I have those units hanging about and all. Sorry about the riot in Damascus. :)

IT: Damascus settler-wealth. Uppsala just doesn't want to produce that settler under any circumstances and riots (because I removed it's MP, oops). Urfa library-wealth. Van warrior-warrior. We get a palace expansion, and put in some nice spires.

And, we win!

Renata I got a missing happy face error so I can't tell you our score. From the looks of the score chart the only possible competition to us is Ivan and it's not even close. Since we are finished I think I'll take a peak and see if they've finished.

Great news! Ivan is not finished and not close - looks like we won! Out of the C3C only CDZ has a chance of beating our date and we beat team Wacken by a few turns. Great job everyone!!!!!!

I just looked at everyone else, too. :) I can hardly believe it, honestly. Everything felt so disorganized in the beginning. But once we had a consensus we always did what we had to do, never miscalculated, and kept pushing, and it paid off. Everyone played so great.

Fantastic job. I'm going to be late for work at this rate so I'll look at it tonight. Well done everyone!

Terrific finish. I knew I wouldn't have to play again. :D :D :D

Big thanks to everybody. I think as a team we played significantly stronger than each individual would gave done. :goodjob:

And that we beat Wacken's farmer gambit is also nice.

Question to those who also own C3C: Is it easier or harder to win with vanilla Civ?

I can't say about the level, but Armies on C3C are very powerful and make a difference in my conquest games. The extra movement point and the better healing are just so useful. In fact units heal better all round which makes things easier. I haven't really played many games that I can compare directly though. The different traits can change things somewhat though.

What a stunning performance. Well done. I thought we (the Peanuts) did well finishing at 840AD until I saw your progress. Ah well, next game perhaps ...

@ Furiey: I'm also stunned at how fast the game ended. Chivalry and a golden age together just stampeded the competition.

You always did have faith, Tao. :) Kudos.

C3C Diety is generally regarded as more difficult than vanilla civ, in part because of the changed corruption model (no more RCP city placement, to begin with) and in part because one of the new C3C traits, agricultural, is quite powerful in AI hands. A few people disagree, though, and others will say it depends on the situation. It gets really complicated really quickly. For example, industrial trait is scaled back in C3C from 2x speed to 1.5x speed. But forest chops only take 3 turns instead of 5. And C3C armies are ridiculously strong (extra movement, fast healing, all kinds of good stuff), but of lesser use than usual in an island game like this one. But then again C3C has the Statue of Zeus, which requires ivory, which is conveniently located next door in India. So who knows.

Simply amazing, your game is nothing but brilliant! Muchos congratulations! :goodjob:  :hatsoff:

We (Durkz) though we were doing quite well, but then Peanut came and beat us by 9 turns. And now you beat us by yet another 31!! The loss to the Peanuts I could blame on us playing too fast, giving them a good target date, but any such reasoning becomes (even more ;) ) ridiculous after seeing your game...

I've said it before and I'll repeat it. Stong leadership and we play as a team. Once we've settled on a strategy we keep to it or discuss further before alterations

There are a number of factors involved. Some make it easier and others harder so it is difficult to say. However armies are much more powerful in C3C but this map discouraged their usage. Cash rushing is cheaper in vanilla/PtW and we used that a fair bit. However we never got a second core running and corruption in C3C is more managable and specialists are much more powerful. Overall I think we possibly slightly better off than our Conquests rivals but it really is a different game.

Well done Team Tao! Your final save is safely up on the server. 10609 Firaxis, 11375 Jason. :goodjob:

For information, the Jason "best date" for domination is 8 turns earlier for Classic than for C3C, and the difference is based purely on the difference in Industrious trait.
