Here's a game I enjoyed. I think I mostly won because I was able to take advantage of my opponent's errors. He brought his queen out early, and I was able to spend several moves harassing her.

I thought I did pretty well after his blunder with 19... Nc6.
I was fairly certain I had the game in the bag when I came up with 26. e6+. I could see at least a couple of lines that lead to checkmate, no matter where his king moved.

Overall, I was pretty happy :)

And just a day or two earlier, I won this game too.
I had made an enormous mistake early on, and she snatched up my queen. With 18... Qg5 I saw that I was in big trouble. By the time I played 21 Nf3 I'm not sure she could have gotten through, but by then she didn't have enough time to withdraw safely. With 24. Rg2 I was starting to feel that I might be able to win, after all (and despite losing my queen so early!). When she played 27... Qxd5, I was able to see that I had a way to force her into losing the queen. It wasn't for another couple of turns before I saw that I could checkmate.

Again, without some mistakes on her part, I don't know if I would have even come close to winning. But since I made a couple fewer mistakes than she did, I was able to win.

Ok, another game where I 'fell' into checkmate. After he sacrificed his rook (for what??) I saw that I had a chance at mate.

With 18... Kf8 I saw a couple lines that lead to mate, but I had no idea how he was going to play, specifically after 20. Ng5. I wonder if he even saw it coming... :mischief:

Since I just discovered that this site also has a part for chessaholics, thought I'd post one of my games here as well. I was White in this game, third round of the U-20 championship of my district. Both of us had a Dutch rating of about 1850 at this point, though he was a little stronger than me.

1.e4 c5
2.Nc3 Nc6
3.f4 g6
The Grand Prix attack has always been my standard anti-Sicilian weapon. It tends to give White active play and good chance at attacks against Black, though I'm not sure about how theoretically sound my play is in this game. To be honest my theoretical knowledge of the game is quite poor.
4.Nf3 Bg7
5.Bc4 e6
You can already see that my play is not theoretically sound anymore at this point.
6.f5?! gxf5
7.exf5 d5
8.Bb5 Bd7
9.fxe6 fxe6
10.0-0 c4?
What he wanted to accomplish there was beyond me. I guess it would have something to do with blocking off my d-pawn, but that's as well accomplished with the pawn on c5. With this move he neglects the need to develop his other pieces, something that will make life difficult here soon.
11.Bxc6 bxc6
12.d4 Qe7?
When I teach chess to the kids at my local chess club, I always tell them to leave the queen be until all the other pieces are developed and the king is safe. Case in point here, where this move is too slow and leaves the initiative to me. Worse is that it forgoes the chance to take the d-pawn, which leaves two nice gaps for my knights.
13.Ne5! Nf6
The knight of course cannot be taken from this dominant position. Bxe5 would make things worse because of Qh5+, Qe5 and trouble for the rook on h8.
14.Bg5 0-0-0
Black tries to run away and make a bit of room in his constricted position. Because he has so little room, I can maneuver however I want to.
15.Na4 Rdf8
16.Nc5 Be8
The bind is complete. Black cannot make a move that makes sense anymore.
17.c3 h6
18.Bh4 Rh7
19.Qa4 Bh8
Time to finish things off!
20.Qa6+ Kd8
21.Nxc6+ Bxc6
22.Qxc6 Re8
23.Qa8+ Kc7
24.Qb7+ Kd6
25.Bg3+ e5
26.Bxe5+ Qxe5
Missed a forced mate here. Not that it matters at this point.
27.dxe5+ Kxc5
28.Qb4+ 1-0

Even though I won this game more by virtue of my opponent's mistakes, it's always fun to see situations such as the one at move 15 where your opponent... just can't do any move anymore even though it's still equal in material. And it certainly went better than in round 4 where I had to face a FIDE master

This was a very enjoyable game.

1. e4 e5
2. d4 exd4
3. Qxd4 Nc6
4. Qd1 Bc5
5. Bc4 d6
6. Nc3 Nge7
7. Nf3 Bg4
8. h3 Bh5
9. g4 Bg6
10. h4 h5
11. Ng5 Qd7
12. gxh5 Bxh5
13. Qxh5 Rxh5
14. Bxf7+ Kf8
15. Bxh5 Nd4
16. Rg1 Nxc2+
17. Kd1 Nxa1
18. Nh7+ Kg8
19. Nf6+ Kh8
20. Nxd7 Rd8
21. Nxc5 dxc5+
22. Bd2 a6
23. Kc1 b5
24. Bg5

My first ten or so moves were pretty lacklustre, but I was able to severely compromise his King with the sacrifice of my Queen for a Rook, a Pawn and a Bishop. This lead to him being successfully lured into taking my Rook, opening himself up for a Queen/King fork. I imagine he felt somewhat peeved ;)

Yeah, you did a nice job of baiting him there. ;)

Couldn't you play Bxf7 at move 8? The black bishop on g4 was undefended and with Bxf7, Kxf7, Ng5+ you'd have gained a pawn and prevented Black from castling.

Thanks. And yes, very incisive. :goodjob:

I have to admit, I simply didn't see it!

This trick is one to remember. Always if you have the position Bc4/Nf3 or Bc5/Nf6 and people move their Q-bishop to g4 (black) or g5 (white), check if the bishop and square f7/f2 are properly defended. If this is not the case you'll often find that you can gain a pawn this way.

A nice tactical joke to use on unsuspecting players. ;)

Welcome to Chess.com!

Still in the process of learning about the workings of the site, but it looks to be good so far.

PS. And I suppose that Narz's People is the CFC team? Seems like Narz invited me over there... thx!

I was looking through some games and found this one by Chamnix. He had an interesting tactic at move 16 that is not easy to see but is in fact winning. If you comment on it put it in spoiler tags so that everyone that wants to can take a look before seeing the answer.

Sorry Narz, I can't play. I'm kind of busy IRL :( and I'm going to cut down on the amount of chess I play online.

Yes, it is. I'm WhiteEagle over there, and I'm a Diamond member, SA of my own group, Admin of the CFC group, and host of a tournament that a few of us from here are in. You ought to befriend me.;)

Same for me. I'm planning on studying some chess after I finish my current games before challenging a 1000-1100 ranked player. If I win that match, I'll keep the challenges coming one by one, gradually going up higher with challenges as my rank and skill improves.

Sounds good WhiteEagle. I've often thought of doing that myself (quitting for a bit to study & get better & come back strong like Rocky :D). For now I'm enjoying myself too much playing games though & kind of need this distraction & community to get by.

Linkage

From about move #28 and on it was clear he wasn't going to resign so I had to end it for him. It took forever...
