Update 4 - 2010
January
Azkhbain and South Ossetia join Russian Federation
The Independent republics of Azkhabain and South Ossetia nominated unilaterally to apply for constituent republic status in the Russian Federation after the ascension of Medenev in Moscow and the subsequent Russian-Belarus reunification in December last year. In South Ossetia the people themselves danced in the streets as the news was read outside the parliamentary chambers.
Five days later President Medenev in Moscow appeared on Russian national television and in a memorable speech declared that any ex-Soviet republic or territory that wished for reintegration with the Russian Federation would be accepted unequiveocly. South Ossetia thus became a constituent republic just 20 days later, with Azkhbain quickly following just three more days later, much to the disdain of Georgia.
Riots in Paris, Lyons, Marseilles, Tours and Nice rock France.
Continued unrest hit France in mid-January due to the continued efforts of the French Judicial Police and the French government against the rise of radical Islam. Riots raged in five major metropolitan cities of France for two days after the arrest of influential radical Abu Mohammed al-Kirkuk who was preaching his virulent form of anti-Western rhetoric in the historic mosque of Marseilles. For now the mosque has been closed down, however it is becoming more and more clear that the present policy of the French government is doing more harm in alienating the mainstream muslim populace then it is rectifying the perceived problem.
PRC vetoes DPRK resolution.
The tensions in the Korean peninsula reached boiling point towards the end of the month due to the US withdrawal from the Six Party Talks and a fresh resolution to re-introduce sanctions against the Democratic Peoples Republic. Pyonyang responded to the threats of renewed US posturing in the UNSC to mobilizing its army, using the recent Republic of Taiwans decleration of independence as its reasoning behind the move. In return Seoul mirroed the mobilization bringing the peninsula one step closer to war.
It was due to the enflamed animosity here that the Peoples Republic of China vetoed the proposed sanctions in the UNSC much to the disdain of President Clinton. Their reasoning was simple. While a war in Korea would more than likely affect neighbouring countries, America was not one of them. If both Koreas collapsed as was likely in the near certain conflaguration that would occur as a result of said relations, then the PRC would bare the brunt of the cost of looking after refugees that would flood its borders. Something with the Chinese Premier declared on state run television to be unacceptable to the Chinese people and the party Politiburo.
February
Raul Castro gives speech on instability in Haiti.
President Raul Castro fronted the Cuban Revolutionary Council early in February heaping scorn on the United Nations mission in Haiti which is being run by the Brazilian military for incompetence in dealing with the rampant crime and unlawfulness that was eating away at the tiny republic like a cancer
United Nations troops take control of Colombia after Venezuelan withdrawal.
A UN expeditionary force took control over the Republic of Colombia on the 10th of February after the Venezuelan military commander handed over the nation to the UN General. This is ahead of a vote that is expected later this year to determine the future of the Colombian people. The Colombian government in exile refuses to recognize the legitimacy of the vote in question out of principle and several groups in Colombia itself, notably FARC have vowed to campaign peacefully themselves, although no quarter will be given to the alleged corrupt politicians that fled to the USA.
Winter Olympics held in Vancouver, Canada.
The Winter Olympics were held in Vancouver, Canada this year and it was a success on most levels. Several nations won their first medals at this event including a gold medal from South Africa. The top 5 nations at the Olympics were 1st Germany; 2nd United States of America; 3rd Russian Federation, 4th Austria, 5th Peoples Republic of China.
However the event was marred when the Ice Hockey final between host nation Canada and the Russians was attacked by a yet unknown terrorist group. Several bombs tore through the complex, apparently delivered by vending machines earlier that day, causing massive structural damage to the arena. 37 people were killed including 2 players (both Russian) and several hundred more were missing and injured, including a Canadian player that was trapped under the rubble of the fallen complex after it collapsed fifteen minutes after the initial explosions.
March
Incident on Korean peninsula sparks tensions
Along the Korean peninsula after the general mobilization that occurred earlier this year tensions have risen, however on the 3rd of March several groups of North and South soldiers clashed and even artillery fired several times from both sides of the border. In Seoul the raid sirens sounded onimoulsy and the normally bustling city of millions of people became all but deserted as people rushed home to be with their family and their bunkers.
Supermarkets throughout the South were ransacked for all goods that might see the anxious civilians through what many believed to be the Second act in the Korean War, although the first one never technically finished. It was only after several high level visits including that of the Peoples Republic of China, the Empire of Japan and the Republic of Taiwan that managed to halt hostilities before they got out of hand, however the peninsula remains on the precipice of the dark abyss of war and it will only take the smallest of stumbles to send it plunging into the blood-soaked waters below.
Georgia declares war on the Russian Federation
The Republic of Georgia in relation to its ultimatum to the Russian Federation in regards to the break-away Republics of Georgia joining the Federation declared war against Moscow on the 10th of March. Almost immediately problems started for the Georgian nation as a massive Russian force was poised to be ready to take advantage of the foolish decleration. Futhermore many Georgians themselves began actively supporting the Russian effort against their government in a clear sign that the Tiblsi regime has lost touch with its citizenry.
It remains to be seen if the Georgians can resurrect what is fast becoming a failed campaign.
French Secularity Act (1905) is amended.
The French Secularity Act of 1905 officaly separated the French state from the church and indeed all relgions, however in recent events French President Sarkozy and numerous French politicians have questioned the more far-reaching implications that this law represents. Sarkozy thus submitted an amendment which passed the French parliamentary system this month and came into law, allowing, for the first time in 105 years, the French government to invest money in religious infrastructure.
Numerous speeches have been made over the last few weeks on the topic and several high ranking French Islamic Clerics have given their blessing to the program. It is believed that religious harmony in France could receive its salvation in this program.
Bombs strike at ESA-LiftPort headquarters in Luxembourg
In late March, less that half a year since the successful completion of the carbon nano-tube furnace in Luxembourg a sizeable fertilizer bomb exploded outside the European headquaters of the Liftport group ripping through the building. Many of the worlds leading experts in atmospheric tether research meeting at a summit paid for by the Luxembourgian Royal family were killed, and the Grand Duke was injured and hospitalized himself for several weeks. The impact this will have on the Space Elevator program is immesurable at this early stage but all indicators predict a slowing down in progress in this revolutionary technology.
April
Cirumscision drive in UGT begins
A circumsicion drive in the Union of Ghana-Togo has created a stirring of protest from several tribes in the nation that believe the operation to be somewhat immoral. While scientists have proven that having the procedure done reduces the risk of HIV infection, and the program has already seen a small drop in new cases (although opponents state that this because the men are simply too sore to do anything anyways) it has also brought a level of discord amongst some residents who protest the gross intrusion of what they perceive their fundamental human rights of freedom of choice.
United Nations peacekeepers leave Haiti due to continued rioting, Brazil agrees to takeover.
In mid-April the United Nations mission to Haiti was recalled after the Haitian government called for its removal due to its destablizing influence although this could be more of a public perception due to the firey rhetoric from several heads of state most notably President Castro of Cuba.
President da Silva has graciously offered to keep Brazilian troops there and commit more Brazilian troops to the tiny Carribean republic to ensure stability and reconstruction efforts continue.
Immigrant Worker program announced by President Clinton.
One of the key election promises of the Clinton-Obama campaign, the Immigrant Worker program is an effort to deal with the American nations greater and growing problem of illegal immigration flooding the nation with cheap and un-regulated labor. President Hilary Clinton on a stirring interview on CNN stated confidently that her program would arrest the influx of illegals from several countries most notably Latin America, and help encourage the immigrants to register. Critics from the Republican party however deride the effort however as a cheapening of America and encouraging more illegal immigrants to come to America as it eases the process for such an immigrant to gain legitimacy and even US citizenship.
Floods ravage Mozambique famine feared.
Late in April floods have given the killer blow to the East African country of Mozambique after severe drought wiped out most of the crops. While initial casualties from the floods are low with only 12 reported fatalities over all, millions of Mozambique citizens are now facing a bleak future as food stores run out and international aid is slow in coming to their aid. Widespread famine, starvation and general anarchy is expected as the Mozambique government and its armed forces take measures to ensure their continuance to prevent the return of civil war which has ravaged the nation in the past on numerous occasions.
United Islamic Republic declared in Tehran.
On the 29th of April President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad stunned the world for the second time in three years when he declared the creation of the United Islamic Republic between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the former soviet Republic of Turkmenistan. The capital of the new and growing force in the region will be in Tehran.
The event was marred however by the US State Department issuing a press release revealing for the first time that the United Islamic Republic is also a power that now has ICBM technology however no foreign government is yet to ascertain if this is a homegrown technology advance or a gift from another foreign power. The knowledge of this is the satellite overheads of ICBM missiles in transit and the silos in the Iranian desert, although Iran has maintained that these are for self-defense and also that there are more than what has been made public. This shift in power however presents new troubles for the western governments in this most volitaile of regions.
May
Algeria and Libya invade and occupy Tunisa
On the 3rd of May the armies of Algeria and Libya invaded Tunisa, in a joint operation called Operation Strategic Influence. The Tunisan Air Force was knocked out on the ground within the first three hours of the operation and by nightfall of the first day the national government of Tunisa was already drafting plans for the evacuation of the government to Malta.
The situation worsened the next day as several units of the Tunisan military mutinied against what they claimed were insurmountable odds and surrendered. By the 7th most major armed forces of the African republic were knocked out of action or fleeing in front of the joint Algeria-Libyan advance. The Tunisian Navy that day set sail with the cabinet and select members of the government to Malta which the Tunisan President vowed to return freedom to his people, however the country was wiped off the map in a matter of days, and divided between the two victors in the small conflict.
French government announces funding program for mainstream mosques
In the recent changed to the French secularity laws, President Sarkozy authorized funds to encourage a mainstream mosque program, instilling a sense of French values in the Muslim population. While at first many members of the French Islamic community avoided the mosques as a symbol of defiance against the recent draconian measures of the French government, after several months the attendance has risen steadily.
However there is still a division amongst the ranks with many clerics deeming that these mosques to be unholy and an affront to Allah with many noted clashes with police in several instances, although not as bad as the January riots. However one thing is for certain little by little a semblance of normality is returning to the French Republic.
Pro-unification government elected in UN held Colombia
In a stunning defeat for the independence movement of Colombia, pro-unification candidates have won a large majority in the Colombian parliament that has been re-institued under the stewardship of the United Nations, in line with the US-sponsored peace plan. Meanwhile in Washington the ousted Colombian President dismisses the results as ludicrious and claims widespread defraudment of the electoral system. However international observers attest to the elections being 98% legitimate.
New Colombian President Juan dela Rodriguez of Bogota has signaled his intent to ensure the stability of the nation and the carrying out of the plebescite in June to see if the Colombian people would willingly join with their Venezuelan breathren. President Chavez helped add his authority to the situation by proclaiming Rodriguez as a man of virtue and the people, and early indicators suggest that Caracas will pull off a political coup the likes of which hasnt been seen for decades.
Spanish people protest outside burnt Parliament building and foreign embassies against Moroccan proclamations.
With the Moroccan government continuing its bluster and demands for the return of Ceuta and Melila, the Spanish people have taken to the streets to protest the numerous other European governments that have thus far take a firm stance on the issue and have forbidden the Spanish nation to what they feel is their legitmate right to pre-emptive defense. The King of Spain himself attended the mass rally in Madrid in late May, the largest seen yet, and derided the European Union and NATO for not sticking with their own allies. Already cracks have been noticed in the European Union in Brussels, as several Spanish representatives have walked out, however they were not alone with 3 Portugese representatives supporting the Spaniards and walking out with them. This situation could get ugly real fast as the Spanish nation demands justice.
June
World Cup held in South Africa
The FIFA World Cup was held in the host nation of South Africa this year without a hitch. A attempted bombing of the first round group match between the USA and Germany was thrawted by the anti-terrorist unit of the South African national police. In the Semi-Finals, reigning champions Italy went down to Brazil, 2-1 while England defeated Argentina in the ultimate grudge match of the competitions history in a stunning penalty shootout after the game was left tied one goal a piece after extra time. In the final England went on to win the cup for the first time since 1966 in a fast paced final that saw three red cards given out including one to the Brazilian captain for a desperate sliding tackle in the box that set up a penalty shot. The resulting goal from the captains mistake gave England the match 2-1, and the captain has since gone into exile, under the threat of death from legions of pissed off Brazilian fans.
However all is not lost to Brazil with the South American nation named the host of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Mass production of carbon nano-tubes begins in Luxembourg.
After the bombing of the Headquaters of LiftPort group for a time the Luxembourgian government considered pulling the pin on the Space Elevator project altogether however in late June the carbon nanotube furnace became fully operational and industrial grade production had begun. With many applications this advent seems likely to make the small duchy even more wealthy than what it currently is, and with several atmospheric tether experiments now scheduled to be held early next year due to postponement after the bombing, the project that only as recently as last month looked as though it would be cancelled is slowly getting back onto track.
Colombia votes for union with Venezuela
On the 30th of June the Colombian people went to the polls for the second time in two months to vote on the future of their nation. This time however it was to vote if their nation actually had a future. The former and ousted President pleaded valiantly for the Colombian people to not accept unification with Venezuela, however Chavez and Rodriguez did a convincing tag team double act extolling the Colombian people to unite with the Venezuelans and form a true power that would lead to their own greater prosperity.
In the end the result was never in doubt. A resounding 66% of the Colombian populace voted for unification and the only questions that now remain are how will the new union fare and how will the other 34% of Colombians react to the union?
July
Somali Peace Accord, Somaliland and Puntland gain formal independence from Somalia.
The long civil war in Somalia finally came to an end when the Mogadishu Accords were signed between representatives of the Interim Somali government, the governments of Puntland and Somaliland and the Ethiopian Federal government early in July. The agreement divides the former nation of Somalia between the first three nations, and recognizes an alliance of sorts to ensure that the Union of Islamic Courts which is maintaing a low level insurgency in the south of Somalia, will not come back to any level of power.
It remains to be seen if other nations will recognize the governments of Puntland and Somaliland, but it seems likely.
German Walther Stutzmann becomes first man in orbit from the ESA.
The dreams of a continent ride with you and with this the first flight of the European Space Agencys manned orbital missions was launched from the launching pad on the German Baltic Coastline, reaching orbit just 10 minutes later. Indeed the whole of Europe who had invested so much into this program rejoiced, with many cities seeing citizens dancing in jubilation over their countries achievement. The ESA is the fourth space agency to achieve manned space flight (US, Russia and China before them) and it seems that the next step will soon be commenced as German Chancellor Angela Merkel has committed the Federal Republic to yet more missions and greater achievements.

FARC leaders are now imprisoned and have been taken for trial to Caracas where they stand accused of crimes against the people and state, a crime which carries the maximum penalty of death, and the citizens of the new larger Republic stand united in their elation at the end of the deadly and long running insurgency.

India occupies the Maldives
After several years of rogue elements of the Maldivian navy causing issues and loss to the Indian Navy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India ordered the Indian army to route the pirates of the Indian Ocean. Within 2 hours of the initial landings and bombardments near the Maldivian capital, Male, the government of the Maldives surrendered and the islands were officially proclaimed a province of the Indian Republic.

The Georgian government now headed by their Foreign Minister after the death of the President and Vice President by pro-Russian rebels in Tiblsi, fled to Ankara after the General of the Georgian Army, Iosef Mikahlivoic surrendered after the Russian army gave his soldiers amnesty if they threw down their weapons. Within 72 hours an emergency meeting of the Council of the Georgian people voted unanimously to elect to apply for constituent republican status with the Russian Federation, a request which was expedited by the Russian administration.
Within 16 hours of the vote, Georgia was formally admitted to being a Republic of the Russian Federation and there was mild celebrations, however the land that bred the likes of Stalin and Beria is now a land divided not only against each other but also the government.
Full scale arms race on sub-continent as Pakistan announces its own military build up.
After the massive increase in military funding in the Republic of India over the last few years, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan appeared on national television towards the end of August. With rising tensions across the line of control in Kashmir and the massive increase in Indian military budgets, Musharraf could only come to one conclusion. India was preparing for war. Thus almost immedialtey the Pakistani military went into overdrive and budgets quadrupled if not more under the guidance of their commander in chief, the general himself, President Pervez Musharraf.
Now more than ever the chance of nuclear was seems imminent. Especially considering the atrocities in Iraq that would occur within days of this announcement (see spotlight). The Doomsday Clock moved forward to the closest it had ever gotten to 3 minutes til midnight.
September
Tensions rise as Chinese fighter is shot over Taiwanese airspace.
Tensions rose in the already strained area of the Taiwan Strait as the 7th US Fleet anchored near the island of Taiwan with reinforcements also arriving daily. The Taiwanese people carried on normal life as if nothing untoward was happening, since the Independence proclamation took place in April, Beijing had taken a more frightening tone towards the Nationalist stronghold.
However it was due to the United States becoming effectively involved, that the Peoples Republic of China had backed off somewhat. China while a growing power was yet unequal when compared to the superpower that was America. To incur Americas wrath the Chinese politiboro considered was not the best thing for China in the long term.
However it was during a routine mission over the Taiwan Strait performed by the Peoples Liberation Army Air Force that almost caused it all the unravel. A Chinese fighter piolit got lost and his radar effectively jammed by the US fleet below. He then entered Taiwanese airspace unbeknownst to him and was shot down quickly and efficiently.
The PRC immediately fueled its ballistic missiles and it was only a matter of quick and largely informal diplomacy between the US Secretary of State and the Chinese Foreign Minister that delayed or put a stop to the start of World War Three.
Atmospheric Tether Research begins in Luxembourg.
After the bombings delayed the progress of the Space Elevator project, LiftGroup had rebuilt and had been able to get to the point to have an atmospheric tether test of 10km of rope. The test itself was a half-success at best and the actually execution of it was poorly made with one worker being killed by a freak accident involving a falling tether. Plans are being drawn up and the scientists who have flocked to Luxembourg over the last few years are confident of success in future endevours next year.
Formal unification of the Republic of Cyprus takes place.
The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the Republic of Cyprus have officially become the Unified Republic of Cyprus in accordance with the Treaty of Nicosia signed and ratified two years ago in 2008. What this means is that one of the major hurdles of the Turkish entry into the European Union is taken away as well as that the Cypriot people now are reunited and struggle to rebuild their somewhat shattered homeland.
