Hurray(?)

I wonder if the rule of thumb of reviews * 40 for owners can also be applied for this store. And how many sales they anticipated for this project. Or whether Meta sponsored the whole thing...

Meanwhile, Anno has had a 3-key combination for some time now, that allows you to go first person and walk the towns you created... just imagine walking those beautiful diorama landscapes on the ground level in Civ7... no Meta or VR equipment required, just pressing a few keys on the keyboard. Is it still far too early in the terms of available technology to expect this?

I suspect it's more on the Meta side of things. Zuckerberg's Civ pet project after he said he liked VI so much? Wouldn't be shocking.

I think such a mode is much harder to do for civ than for Anno. Anno has mostly realistic proportions for people, buildings, and landscape. Civ is traditionally completely out of proportion. People and buildings are half the height of mountains, for example. Hence, a similar Easter egg first person mode would look very, very strange and probably not very enjoyable.

But it was kinda possible in Civ4? There was one parameter to change in a file to enable a key combination for a free camera that you could get down almost to the ground. And I did not care that people were twice as tall as trees :) And that with Civ4 graphics levels. With the amount of detail they've put into Civ7's units and buildings, there really must be a potential for very pretty postcard shots.

This just looks terrible to me, and I can't understand the appeal. I watched a YouTuber livestream a play through yesterday, and the combination of the janky graphics, the legless leaders, and the dizzying UI, I really just don't understand the appeal of playing this.
It's clearly not for the external viewer, or streaming. I briefly watched a VR livestream and quit before I became seasick. But you can't really judge the player's experience untill you saw it from "inside" in VR. Still, I do believe that giving us 1st person view first would make a bigger "wow" factor for the larger audience for now.

Yeah, it's ok. It's clearly not for me. I will leave it alone now that I've said my piece.

Meta buy page does not open for me. Propably ad blocks on my network etc.

So you need to buy this separately? No steam connection? Hard pass even for testing in that case.

I have the VR version - as well as the PC version. The concept is cool - but doesn't really work in VR yet. Besides the flaws as noted throughout the forumn around UI, etc - when playing in VR - you really can only see a small section of the map unless you zoom way out. However, when you zoom way out - you basically lose any cool VR things. This basically causes you to constantly zoom in and out and it can be exhausting! I started with the VR version and have now switch to PC version. I do think that there are possibilities, but not quite yet.
