The name 'Free Civ Fanatics' stems from the April 1 'Polymerger joke the mods played on us. The new site, CivJunction, was going (so they claimed) to charge users to participate in the GotM. A few gullible fanatics broke off and formed their own 'totally free' Civ site, which from my position in the lurker's chair seemed quite fun until they moved to 'CivWorld'.
This is not quite right.

This is a veiled reference to Sid Meier's Colonization, and if you go back and look at the Declaration of Independence thread you'll see others. In the game, once you declared your independence your civ's name changed from "English" to "Free English," or whatever was appropriate. Hence, once the site "broke away" (despite many warnings from Catharsis that there would be no merging

Ironically, the new name of the site, United Civvers, was coincidentally the name I happened to choose for the declaration. And no, I had nothing to say about how all this transpired. It's funny it worked out that way.
End silly history lecture.

BTW, I am on record in several places saying that the merger was just a joke. 'Twasn't about gullibility, but humor.
