Hi again!
I'm starting a new game as Qin (industrious/protective). I am tempted to SIP and save the 2nd corn for another city. What would you do? I am leaning towards SIP because I value production, but 2 corn in the BFC is also tempting.

SIP:
  • health from fresh water
  • lots of forests
  • only one food source
  • good production potential (2 plains hills plus 3 resources)
  • 2 floodplains
  • 5 cottages tiles (plains disregarded)
  • strategically I prefer not to move towards the jungle in the early game
  • possibility of happy surprise on tile 2N

Settle on Elephants:
  • 2 corn
  • immediate elephants not needing hunting nor worker turns
  • less forests
  • not so good production (2 grassland hills and 1 resource)
  • only 1 floodplain
  • 5 cottages tiles (need to save one grassland for irrigation, plains disregarded)
  • plenty of plantation money after calendar

I wouldn't SIP. Actually I think every possible 2:hammers: city center tile that keeps :food: is better (1W, 2E, 2S, 1E1NE).

I'd move on the stone, if fish or something nice 2N I'd settle there. If not, go south and settle on phant.

There is no real reason to worry about production. After granary whipping is better than working mines anyway. With IND you'll get Mids 100% anyway.

^ Qin is THE leader to go TGW with. Half priced, then espionage + choks, since they already do the "collateral" part of siege.

In many cases, if you give more details about your game and map settings, you'll get better advice 🙂.
For example, if a player simply asks "my neighbours are Gandhi and Lincoln, should I self-tech Archery to defend myself?", probably many people will reply "no need for archery unless you want to HA rush an AI". But if this player gives more detailed info in his/her question "It's an Always War game on Emperor, I have no copper but I've already seen my neighbours Gandhi and Lincoln's Axes moving towards my border. Should I research Archery and build some archers?" With this info, many people will say "building archers is not a bad choice in AW games" and may give some extra tips about archer choking.

Settling on stone or on Ivory is definitely better than SIP. But what is the map type? It might change the settling decisions.

If the map is Islands or Archipelago, settling on the stone and grabbing GLH would be good, especially if you find some AIs connected by coast/sailing. If the map is Inland sea, I would slightly prefer to settle on the marble and backfill the stone spot later, as GLH doesn't make much sense in Inland sea. If the map is fractal and you're isolated, settling on stone and building Mids would be tempting; you might be able to grab GLib because of IND + marble and bulb your way to astronomy. If it's a Pangaea map, settling on marble, oracle MC and doing some CKN rush would also be interesting. If the settings includes "raging barbarians" and "low sea level", building TGW would be legitimate.

Settle on Elephants:
  • immediate elephants not needing hunting nor worker turns
2 :hammers: city centre tile is nice, but you'll still need Hunting to get the +1 :)- from Ivory.

Given just the initial info before moving the settler, I'd actually go for 1N of the marble. The marble itself is inconsequential for the early game.

This spot is a 2H center with 2 hills, keeps a food and the FPs while moving inland, and the Ivory settle is a natural 2nd city site. Even if you don't get lucky and pick up another food with the move East, you can farm the FP to make up for it and your production is good in that spot with 2h center + 4h PH +3h GH native hammers at size 3 and up to net +8food with Corn + FP farmx2 + Grass Farm at size 4. At least 6 forests for your early BW chopping spree as Qin.

And again, your 2nd city site is natural as well, though you'll need borders or even settle it 1SE of Ivory depending on what else you find around the peak.

The major issue I see is that there appears to be desert East of the marble tile though.

Got the starting save?

Well you only have to get to code of laws…at least the way I play occ is just to run specialists and build wonders. Agreed that gems or gold would be the icing on the cake, but it’s hard to argue with double corn plus stone and marble.
