Sirius Intra-Team Pitboss Game!

Okay, it looks like most everything is near pretty much sorted then, if I'm not missing anything. Dave, will you be able to get this going soon? It'd be great to get started before too long. I'm excited about trying this out. :)

Just to recap...

Map options

- Fractal map
- Huge size
- Temperate climate
- Low sea level
- Ancient start
- Normal speed (takes too long in an 18-player pitboss if it's slower)
- Cylindrical wrap (as Toroidal is prone to ice-surrounded starts)
- Standard resources
- Checked beforehand to make sure no teammates are isolated from one another (although it doesn't matter so much if both civs on a team are alone on an island; tech trading off balances this out)

Game options

- Somewhere around Noble-Monarch difficulty (Dave can probably choose; don't want it to be too hard for the newer players with barbs etc)
- Vassal States off
- Random Events off
- Tech Trading off (no-one seems to have disagreed with this so far; espionage can be used to catch up if you're falling behind)
- Everything else as defaults

House rule

No declaring war before 1 AD (although this can be debated/discussed during the next few days if people want). I was going to single out "stronger players", but I'm not sure who to put apart from myself, Azz and Dave (I don't know most of the rest of you and/or haven't played with you in a long time). Being honest, do any of the rest of you have some multiplayer experience, or play high levels in single player? If so you should try not to be mean by rushing the newer players early on. ;)

Teams

Team 1. Lord Parkin - Ragnar and Huayna Capac
Team 2. azzaman333 - Shaka and Hannibal
Team 3. hell_hound - Zara Yaqob and Napoleon
Team 4. champinoman - Willem van Oranje and Julius Caesar
Team 5. fed1943 - Darius I and Mansa Musa
Team 6. DaveShack - Pericles and Gandhi
Team 7. Irgy - Elizabeth and Genghis Khan
Team 8. Allan79 - Pacal II and Louis XIV
Team 9. caveman1917 - Lincoln and Augustus Caesar

(There are other players who will probably be taking over some of the civs, but this is how the teams should be set up in the menu.)

I think that's about all the information Dave should need to get the game started. Looking forward to it.

I'm actually really interested to see what people will accomplish with espionage in particular. My guess is this might be a slightly devious game. :)

It helps because the amount of EP required to steal a tech is much less (usually about half or less) than the amount of beakers required to obtain that tech yourself.

This was the point of difference then. I had another read of:
http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/strategy/espionage_cost.php
and concluded that you are indeed correct. I think last time I read it I stopped at the comparison of the multiplier buildings, without appreciating the effect of the other bonuses.

Of course you can use espionage with tech trading on as well, so it's still strictly less opportunity to catch up, but we've been over that ground already.

Looking forward to the game starting :)

It's the same to me :)
Okay. Since he was first on the list of backup players - pindicator, you can play on caveman1917's team. If you have any preference as to your leader (Lincoln or Augustus), then state it now or forever hold your peace. :)

No war until 1AD?

AAArrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Can i ask for a 500 BC or a 1000 BC limit?

Some clarification on my play level.
Even if at normal speed i'm not much strong, since my preferred speed is Epic with some shot on Marathon, i've beaten an Emperor AW game (for the HoF Challenge series) and i own some absolute #1 in the Hof at Monarch.

Those are solo games, but officially submitted. No cheat, no way... just the choice of a good starting location by regenerating the map.

This game will be on a Huge map with Low seas, so whatever team you're on, you should have plenty of room to expand. Besides that, it's not really very fun if you go and rush a newer player at 1000 BC (or earlier) and take them out of the game. For some people this is their first multiplayer experience, and so we should at least give them a chance... wiping them out at the earliest opportunity might be what happens in a competitive ladder game, but we're trying to have a friendly match here. Wiping someone out ASAP isn't the way to get them enthused about multiplayer. ;)

I'm almost a newbie too on MP.
Your points are more than enough.

OK, let's be peaceful and friendly

If everyone agrees, I'm quite happy to go with no house rule, and have a free-for-all on when everyone declares. I was just keeping the newer players in mind, and didn't want to see them eliminated too early. But if they're all happy with it, we can go for more of a free-for-all style of game right from the start. :)

With my luck I'll end up next to LP and he'll kill me just as fast as he did in all the other games we played together. House rule sounds good to me, and I'd appreciate tips on how people can afford lots of units without killing their tech and/or economy.

I'll gen a few maps via the suggested method and see what develops.

Tech trade off is going to majorly favour dual financial civs, and really takes a chunk of diplomacy out of the game that I would rather not loose :( Other than that settings are fine with me. I guess I could share...

Not too much... starting positions still count for quite a lot, and espionage is always available to everyone to keep up. :)

and really takes a chunk of diplomacy out of the game that I would rather not loose :(
Alliances can still form and break through diplomacy, though. The only difference is that we won't be shooting through the tech tree so fast that we never have a chance to build anything. ;)

Okay, if you'd like to share, then is there a particular leader you want out of Zara and Napoleon, or do you not mind?

If it's not too late, I'll add my name to the list as one of those extra players that trickles in.

As for my experience level, I'm a Monarch/Emporor player in single player. My only MP experience is with friends who are totally against early rushes, so I have some sense of how a game with other humans is different (and better) than one with just AIs.

Sure, added you to the list. :)

*sigh* Posting failed first time so here is a brief version :)
I am awful at using espionage and leveraging my starting position.
I will not havee a huge deal to offer without tech being a poor warmonger, and getting to gunpowder quickly is good for me :)
I will play Zara as I am already playing Napoleon in the test game.

But if you can get to Gunpowder quickly via tech trading, it won't stop there. People will be able to get to Riflemen very shortly after. So your UU will see hardly any active window with tech trading on.

Okay, so the next person in the list can take Napoleon. That would be BLubmuz. :)

Hehe. You could look at it this way - the other game already has tech trading on, so we can try one with each.

So, me and hell hound team together for this one?

Alright, 2 of the worst leaders, worst UUs and worst UBs put together... nice.

Oh well, it's when the game becomes tough that the toughs start play

Feel free to correct the above with the right english saying.

Ethiopia is an awesome civ. I don't know what you're on about with the Oromo Warrior being a bad UU. Those free double Drill promotions are passed on to all units they upgrade to as well, you know. ;)

And Napoleon has a very decent trait combination, even though the UU and UB might not be optimal.
