SirJethro's DyP II - "The Emperor's New Mod"

We are barrelling toward Jurisprudence in 5 turns (-22gpt). I understand now that giving the Incans this tech will nullify their Chichen Itza. Oh, and I didn't realize that Four of our enemies have Slave Trade built. I wonder how much they'll pay for Emanciaption? ;)

Quokka has done such a good job with MM, that the only thing I do is switch Silvertusk to Forge and Dyed Ugly to Pike (there's plenty of grassland; I don't think they need Harbors).

IBT: A Tibetan trading ship shows up between Home and Big Islands.
[1] 1355AD: Quokkaton Marketplace -> Guttenberg's Bible (+50% research).
Cottonton Tax collector -> Shrine
Dyed Pretty Shrine -> pike (Defenseless cities is just asking for an attack).
I forget what the Caravel full of military units is supposed to do. I send them to Wheat Thins for MP and culture suppression, and pick up two workers.

IBT: Tibet wants an alliance vs Ethiopia.

[2] 1360AD: Tuskany -> Temple.
Workers chop near North Big Island.
I consider building the Summer Palace at Leo's Retreat, but it's 400 shields. We'd need a leader for that. Instead it will build a harbor.

IBT: China asks us to leave. Ethiopia want to embargo Tibet. The Embargo of Ethiopia and Polynesia against us ends. Tibetan trading ship heads south, possibly toward an empty spot on Home Island.

[3] 1365AD: Disease strikes Tuskany.
Isacchia grows, I rush the Colonist for 305.
Dispatch a Cuirassier to cover the open spot, and a Caravel tails the Tibetan trading ship.
Adjust slider to keep Jurisprudence in 2. Income is now 77gpt.
MM Kal-el to get Encyclopedia in 7.

IBT: Ethiopia and Siam sign peace. China builds Gutenberg's Bible in Hangchow.

[4] 1370AD: Dyed Pretty Pike -> Monastery.
Darwin Shrine -> Guild Hall.
Isacchia Colonist -> Pike
Adjust research slider again. Quokkaton switched to Sistine Chapel.
Colonist sent toward hill.
Polynesia has a monopoly on Metallurgy. Incans need Divine right in order to get Jurisprudence. Divine Right and Iron to Polynesia for Metallurgy and 145 gold. DR to Incans for WM, 217, Magnetism, and Bridge Building. Encyclopedia is still 6 turns away. The others don't have enough gold to make giving them DR worth it.
Switch Quokkaton to East India Company, due in 15.

IBT: Siamese and Incans are building Sistine. Polynesians start East India Company.

[5] 1375AD: Jurisprudence is ours. Mercantilism next in 6 (+76gpt).
Golden Blubber Marketplace -> Academy.
Investigate Harekli. CRAP! EIC in 13 turns!! :mad: They also have 6 defenders, wines, furs, cotton, iron and saltpeter. But they won't grow for 26 turns. Woohoo! I can MM Quokkaton to get EIC in 12! [dance]

IBT: Incan/Siamese Embargo ends. I re-sign peace with Tibet.

[6] 1380AD: SJ Stables Town Clock -> Guild Hall. Tuskany Temple -> Guild Hall. Disease strikes Tuskany AGAIN! :aargh:
Rush pike in Isacchia for 190.
I found Goldron south of Isacchia to eventually get Iron and Gold. Monument set.
Jurisprudence gets sold to Polynesia and China for 1264 & 563 (market value). Unfortunately, Incans have NOTHING to offer at all, so I gift it to them, cancelling their Chichen Itza. They become surprisingly Polite. :p

IBT: China is bombarding the bejeezus out of the Siamese tobacco plantations. Chinese start EIC.

[7] 1385AD: Golden Blubber Academy -> University.
Isacchia Pike -> Taxman.
Rush Monument in Bear Butte for 70.
Caravel picks up worker in Rottnest.
Switch Wheat Thins to library (quicker than temple), and rush it for 120.

IBT: I renew silks/coffee deal with China (don't want to lose EIC to a riot). Renew peace with Siam. Tibetan regular warrior launches an amphibious attack against the Ethiopian city to our south, losing miserably.

[8] 1390AD: Bear Butte Monument -> Pike.
Sugar Bay Shrine -> Forge.
Wheat Thins Library -> Aqueduct.
Our Carrack finds a tundra island to the north of us.

IBT: Tibet and China Ally vs. Siam, Incans, and Polynesia. :rolleyes:

[9] 1395AD: Workers chop more jungle. Tundra Island has Saltpeter.

IBT: I turn down Chinese embargo discussions.

[10] 1400AD: Encyclopedia is ours. Kal-el starts Bazaar.
Dyed Pretty Monastery -> Pike.
Fortify spearman in Goldron.
Our workers cause the Sierra Club to be formed. :)

Well, the good news is that we have Encyclopedia. The bad news is that only the Chinese have any techs over us (Naval Cannon and Newtonian Synthesis), and are at war with everyone else except the Tibetans, who couldn't afford a broken stick. So unfortunately, our Encyclopedia is outdated. :( We are up Bridgebuilding, Humanism, and Metallurgy over China.

Democracy, 7565 gold + 59 gpt. Mercantilism (Central Bank and International Port) in 1. International Port gives +50% tax, lux, and science, and +1 food, shield, and commerce in each water tile. :eek:

Two quick notes: Silvertusk will grow next turn, so put the worker on the hills to bring its shield output to 5 (w/o the forge). The Caravel between Home and Big Islands should go explore the island south of Shantung (has wheat showing).

We really need some more pikemen to free up our horses from MP duty.

Here is the save

Good job on MM'ing the EIC. That's a good win in this island game. I will play first thing in the morn. Gonna get us out of war for a while and give peace a chance. Powell Doctrine.

No worries, we'll get our money's worth out of it in the Industrial Age. Compulsory Education comes really slow, and if you manage research well, this is one of the top two or three techs in the game.

Oh, and I almost forgot, SJ. As we just built Encyclopedia, in the first IBT, some civs may switch from Encyclopedia to EIC. You may want to do a quick espionage check to make sure we're still going to get it (not that there's much we could do about it).

I'm going to be out of town from Thursday to Monday, so skip me as needed. No internet access on Martha's Vineyard. ;)

Great turn.

The encylcopedia is an investment for the future, as SJ says it'll come into its own in the Industrial Age.

I forget what the Caravel full of military units is supposed to do. I send them to Wheat Thins for MP and culture suppression, and pick up two workers

thats what it was for

Got it.

International Port gives +50% tax, lux, and science, and +1 food, shield, and commerce in each water tile.

Yes...one of my favorite new small wonders. :goodjob: You can typically see me going from city to city counting the coast and sea tiles to see where it will be most effective. :) I'm disappointed that we didn't get it before our Golden Age in this game, though. My last two games I have and it's great pulling a GA shield from the coast.

I think this should go in Darwin (14 water tiles, vs. 10 in Golden Blubber and 7 in Quokkaton). Although it will take forever for Darwin to build it with it's current produciton. Investment for the future though.

Pretty quiet. Our production is slowly improving with the courthouses and WLTKDs. Please welcome our two new cities: Desperado and Salt Petersburg.

=====================

"A Concise History of the Reign of Sir Jethro VI"

IT (1400 AD) - I initiate some diplomacy to start things off:
Tibet(Furious) - Nothing doing.
Siam(Cautious) - ROP, they give WM. Now Polite.
Polynesia(polite & rich) - ROP, they give 2gpt and WM. Give Incense for 480gp. Give Humanism for 1120 and 9gpt. Give Dyes for 7gp and 5gpt.
Inca(Polite) - ROP, they give 12gp and WM.
Ethiopia(Polite) - ROP, they give WM.
China(Polite & Rich) - Give Bridge Building, Metallurgy and Humanism for WM and 1305gp. They won't trust an ROP yet.

The only other changes it to MM Little Crabhorn so that they will be in WLTKD next turn (moved a MP from East Port). I tinkered with a few other southern cities as well to try to do the same. I also rushed Courthouses in IOB (255gp) and SJ Farms (255gp) and North Big Island (305gp) and Harbor in Leo's Retreat (100gp). I rush the Guild Hall in Darwin for 700gp. Steep I know, but I want to start the International Port as soon as possible. It's too bad we have to chop the forest there to irrigate. We need mo shields.

Here we go:

OT: Polynesia asks for alliance vs. Tibet. No go.

Jeez...has anyone noticed how many Carracks China is using off the coast of Wheat Thins? I at least 5 or 6. Quite a navy for the AI. It will be interesting to get a spy later in the game.

Mercantilism researched. Leadership set. 7 turns at 40%.
Silvertusk: Forge>Shrine
Darwin: GH>International Port (84 turns, but I'm gonna work on that).
IOB: Courthouse>Forge
Leo's: Harbor>Courthouse
North Big Island: Courthouse>Forge
SJ Farms: Courthouse>Harbor

1405 AD: I've gotten Little Crabhorn up to 3spt (FP in 57) with 1 food lost per turn. We can do that for 20 turns. After that, we'll have to settle for 2shp at zero growth to avoid starvation. Still better than 1 per turn.

I accidentally build a watch tower next to Goldmember and waste a worker. I really wish there was a confirm button. I gotta stop using the icons for worker tasks. Sorry guys.

OT: Ethiopia and Polynesia sign military alliance against China.
Dyed Pretty: Pike>Guild Hall
Iron Mountain: GH>Pike
Chia completes Sistine Chapel

1410: Rush Tax Collector in Issachia for 25gp.
Change North Big Island to Colonist and rush for 380gp (the caravel is there to get him. i'm also going to rush a colonist in issachia).

OT: Kal-el: Bazaar>Colonist
Golden Blubber: University>Bank
Jungle Island: Pike>Shrine
NBI: Colonist>Pike
Issachia: Taxman>Colonist

Incas building East Inda Co

1415 AD: Send NBI colonist and pike off in Caravel. Backfilling NBI pike with one from SJ Farms.

Hmmm...something happened to my WLTKD in Little Crabhorn. Still have no unhappies, but WLTKD is gone. May have something to do with negative food, so I'll reconfigure for the 2spt scenario.

OT: Our soothsayers learn Naval Cannon.
Iron Mountain: Pike>Academy
China completes Newton's University.

1420: Rush colonist in Issachia for 395gp.

There was no point sending the Carrack that was near the Big Island to explore that island with the wheat. It takes them so long to go through sea squares that the Caravel with the settlers is going to get there 5 turns earlier.

Rush Monument in Goldron for 110gp.
Rush Courthouse in Leo's for 385gp.

Diplomacy:
Polynesia(polite): Merchantilism for 400gp and 53gpt. Cotton for 5gpt and 6gp and WM. Horses for 26gpt (I don't see them being a rival anytime soon, and they'll just get them from somebody else before long, and strong as they are).
China: Merchantilism for 350gp and WM.

OT: Kal-el: Colonist>Pike
Goldmember: Aqueduct>Pike
Leo's: Courthouse>Pike
Issachia: Colonist>Wiseman
Goldron: Monument>Harbor

1425 AD: Next turn, 2 colonists and 1 Pike will arrive at the mystery island with the wheat.

OT: Land 'o Plenty: Shrine>Tollhouse
Tuskany: Guild Hall>Marketplace

1430: 1 colonist and 1 pike are leaving main island for the small saltpeter island north of Quokkaton. It looks like the mystery wheat island is only big enough for 1 city, so i drop off 1 colonist and the pike.

OT: Quokkaton completes East India Company, granting +1 ship movement and +50% to Tax and Luxury output. Building Bank.
Kal-el: Pike>Port
Iron Mountain: Academy>University
Polynesians, Chinese building Magellan's Voyage (it won't last long).

1435: New city formed: Desperado. Harbor ordered. Slider adjusted for last turn of Leadership.

OT: Leadership complete. There goes Sun Tsu's. Cavalry Tactics set (7 turns at 40%)

1440: Wounded Knee: Pike>Wiseguy
Kal-el:Port>Marketplace
Sugarbay:Forge>Tollhouse

China: Sell Leadership for 1645gp and WM
Polynesia: Sell Leadership for 350gp and 21gpt and WM

1445: I land colonist and pike on island north of Quokkaton. I want to put the city right on top of the saltpeter because I want the Whale in our radius.

OT: Issachia: Wiseguy>Courthouse
Our people add the West Wing to our palace. :king:

1450: New city formed: Salt Petersburg. Harbor ordered.

NOTES: There is a Caravel on auto to Golden Blubber. Let it go there to upgrade to Galleon. The Carrack in GB can stay there to ship building where I think it gets upgrade to Frigate. The caravel near big island has a lone colonist. It's up to you, but I suggest one of the two little islands north of the big island. I improved Darwin as much as possible. It is impossible to get more shields out of it until foresting. It is pulling 22spt I believe and will have IP in 44 turns. Worth the wait in my opinion. Once it gets it, it will be a really good producer.

I've been pretty agressively selling our techs to China and Polynesia. This is for 2 reasons...(1) I want us to start leeching their treasuries and gpt. This will slow them down a bit, and (2) it keeps them from researching the techs we already know. That way, they will research techs we don't know, making our Encyclopedia more valuable. I would suggest finishing out the part of the tree we're on right now.

Good luck.

Question to developers: Can someone please explain the palace gardens? I don't think the splash screen that I've seen in my SP game is accurate, and the spreadsheet only lists culture. Is that all it does?

HERE IS THE SAVE.

Good Plan. I do this alot. Lets keep this going.

Hmmm...something happened to my WLTKD in Little Crabhorn. Still have no unhappies, but WLTKD is gone. May have something to do with negative food, so I'll reconfigure for the 2spt scenario.
Yeah can't be starving. Apparently starving people aren't as happy as models appear to be. I'd happily starve if a model appeared. ;)

Got it

Question to developers: Can someone please explain the palace gardens? I don't think the splash screen that I've seen in my SP game is accurate, and the spreadsheet only lists culture. Is that all it does?

Yep just culture boosters

With regard to the gardens, they used to be regular improvements; when they were changed recently to small wonders, they were crashing because of no splash screen, so they all temporarily have been given the splash screen of their associated palace. As Quokaa says, they are just culture with a maintenance cost.

The garden went in after I had visited a couple of baroque palace gardens near my home. I liked the idea of being able to invest in a beautification of your palace to gain culture and impress your neighbors, at the expense of a somewhat costly maintenance. In game terms, think something like the gardens at Versailles.

Their main function is to help towards a cultural victory (which should by now be a good deal more difficult than it used to be).

Wouldn't a palace garden create some sort of happiness? Let it be like an extra cathedral that you can be built in cities with palaces...

My wife and daughter are out of town until the 16th, and I've got the house to myself. You could say that I'm currently in a Golden Age for playing Civ. ;)

Whose got it after Quokka? If there are any dry spots where nobody can play, I'll take it.

My wife and daughter are out of town until the 16th, and I've got the house to myself. You could say that I'm currently in a Golden Age for playing Civ.

They're great aren't they :D

Inherited Turn
Uh oh Tibet are on the rise again
WTH???. I rub my eyes. Nope we really do have 11523g in the Bank.
Hope you don’t mind but I’m going to do a bit of spending. In my other SG we have to watch every cent.

MM Quokkaton to grow in 4, Bank still finishes in 3
MM Bear Butte for WLTKD, change from Pike to Courthouse and rush for 340g
Rush Shrine in Cottonton for 55g
MM East Port for WLTKD and rush Shrine for 30g
Change Dyed Ugly from Pike to Courthouse and rush for 205g
Change Sugar Bay from Toll House to Courthouse and rush for 360g
Rush Shrine in Silvertusk for 65g
Change Goldmember from Pike to Courthouse and rush for 275g
Rush Forge in IOB for 165g
Change Leo’s Retreat from Pike (no Barracks) to Shrine and rush for 130g
Change NBI from Pike to Forge and rush for 135g
Change SJ Farms from Harbor to Shrine and rush for 110g
Rush Courthouse in Rottnest for 70g
Change Issachia from Courthouse (why bother) to Shrine
Change Wheat Thins from Aqueduct (why bother) to Shrine and rush for 80g

I am sorely tempted to change Little Crabhorn to a courthouse and rush it. I’ll see what the other courthouses get out of their cities, but just 1 or 2 shields would make it worthwhile.
I’m going to change the name of Little Crabhorn, for sometime now that has reminded me of a venereal disease and that’s not good for our Forbidden Palace site. I’ll call it Foghorn Leghorn :)

I China and Siam sign a Peace Treaty
China and Ethiopia sign a Peace Treaty

Golden Blubber Arq=>Clipper

Notes
Quokkaton and Kal-el both build a Pikeman in 1 turn. I have just had them start pumping them out for our southern cities. There are some Pikemen on the way to Golden Blubber. I was just waiting to fill the Clipper and then take them to the outer islands. Salusa Secundus has no MP yet. Let those two pump for a few turns and all cities will have enough MP’s to free our riders.
The next Leader can choose our next form of Government. I think we should aim for Modern Legal System and get the Supreme Court (free Courthouse every city, no obs).

Possible bug? I noticed in my SP game that when I mine plain tiles that have horses and then railroad it, I still only get 2 shields, whereas normal plains tiles pull 3 shields with a mine and railroads. I've only seen this so far with horses...I've had to just go around irrigating my horseplains to get the RR bonus. Any help?

Looks OK to me (see below) Can you post a save?

Grrrr...I just spent 30 minutes going through my savegames. I can't recreate it. Either this was a passing thing that worked itself out, or I was tipping it a little too heavy last night and left that tile RR'd or something. Sorry to cause a false alarm here.

Modern palace gardens are open to the public, but previously they were reserved for the rulers. Besides, we have been cutting down on the happiness providers for some time.

I'm stretching, but here's anouther idea....have them become available later in the game, like at City Planning or around that era and let them reduce polution along with the culture. I'd just love to see them do something other than culture, because I like the idea of an add on to the palace, but I don't see the point of building it now unless I'm going for a culture win (which I never have).
