I have had Skype, but haven't reinstalled it since I reinstalled Windows.

But now I hear Hyves is actually better. Is it? Does anyone know the difference?

Edit: Skype and Hyves are programs with which you can call each other. Kinda like MSN with audio conversation, except that these programs give you the option of calling real phone numbers, for payment of course. But calling from Skype to Skype user (or Hyves to Hyves) is free.

they both sound like nasty diseases that come either from nasty bug, or un-sanitary peoples neather bits :ack:

I have no idea what they are :dubious:.

I have used Skype, and regularly. Works best with broadband really, otherwise it can be quite patchy. Haven't heard of Hyves. Is it better? Anyone know?

I have only tried Skype, so I couldn't say.
Skype works really good most of the times, but on some occasions your reception will be really bad. But since my parents are in France, my brother is in England, and I live in the US, you have no idea how much we saved on phone bills.
It's almost a pleasure to have those pesky telemarketers call you at unwanted times to try and sell you long-distance calls... :)

Hyves.net gives virtually zero technical information as far as I can see, but it shows no sign of being able to do voice connections. Another service along these lines is Gizmo Project. It uses the Open Standard SIP rather than Skype's proprietary colsed protocol, so it's more likely to interwork with other developing public VoIP services.

I've used Skype from UK to Belgium and locally with no problems, computer-to-computer, both ends on broadband, and computer-to-land line (SkypeOut).

I've downloaded and installed Gizmo, but I don't know any one else who has it so I haven't tried it out yet.

I've used Skype, no problems there for me. Others I have not tried.

What is "..." , is that like Skype or Hyves?
