So You Get To Pick a City to Live For 1 Year (under 100k) In Mainland Africa. Where?

Lindi Tanzania looks like a promising option. ~95,000 population and it is on the Indian Ocean. Not much happening there, but it is close to other interesting places.

Surprised no one mentioned Botswana yet. Only the capital and second largest city is over 100k, there are still a good selection of regional centres to choose from. Sort of democratic, sort of English-speaking, pretty safe (by African standards), generally high level of development (and slightly less unequal than Namibia), decriminalised homosexuality (so I can bring my partner). The disadvantage compared to Namibia is there's no coastal towns, but I don't mind.

Interesting place but yeah lack of coast and idk Botswana appeal mysf.

I want coastal or large river/lake/oasis

Somewhere that has penguins. If I'm going to live somewhere that has no proper winter, I at least want penguins. And southern hemisphere constellations. I've never seen Alpha Centauri, Antares, or the Magellanic Clouds, so those are the requirements.

According to the Wikipedia page on LGBT rights in Africa, South Africa is the best place in mainland Africa for queer people, though Botswana isn't that far behind. Cape Verde is fairly progressive too, as of course are the British and French overseas territories.

Well I'm certainly staying out of Nigeria, I may be old but I'm in no hurry to die.

Under 100k is a low bar but Mindelo looks like a decent choice

South Africa and Namibia have penguins:

Down on the Cape that gives Cape Town its name are beautiful small seaside towns and there are penguins close by. Look up Simonstown for an example.

Quarzazate is far from the sea though.

Botswana would be my second choice if the restriction on cities over 100k was lifted. But it does get a little hot there, even if it’s a dry heat I’d rather stick to a coast where getting some fish doesn’t mean having them frozen and flown in on a plane. :)

I did say no tourist type resorts. What counts as a resort though....

It was mostly just to avoid some places on the Egyptian red sea or Mediterranean coast.
eh is it really a resort? A resort I think some sort of big hotel and with some sort of nightclub district.
honestly I thought of the place I remember seeing in a few movies and looked it up. I always wanted to visit Morocco.

Morocco has some great spots a few are touristy though. Would be on my short list to visit.
