There are only a few songs that everyone in a given country or language knows from very young to very old.

I am interested in learning as many of them as I can, because you never now where you will be camping or waiting for the bus with company and a guitar ;)

I will get the ball rolling here:

France

Mexico Possibly the entire Spanish speaking world:

That one is probably the only song in Mexico more well known than the national anthem.

Hell, I started up Cielto Lindo Huasteco without a clue what it may be, and instantly recognized it! I haven't heard the French one though, but christ is it catchy.

Songs "everyone" knows rarely turn out to actually apply to "everyone" at all. But for the US, outside of stuff like children's nursery rhymes, the only things close would be your typical patriotic/traditional fanfare (Sousa, America the Beautiful, etc...) and maybe, maybe a few classic rock'n'roll songs like "Stairway to Heaven" that could apply. Lyrics, of course, are a lost hope on anything more complicated than "Mary had a little lamb"

Also - didn't recognize the Mexican one at all.

Happy birthday

:cringe:

Ummm, like actual "at one time could have been on the radio" (If radios existed at the time)

Again :cringe: Actual songs.

And like I said I don't actually mean everyone, as stated in the first post - Country or Language group.

In any case though -

I am willing to say that 2/3rds of the western world recognizes that song and 95%+ of the people who can read music know it.

Notice how the entire crowd recognizes it within 3 or 4 notes.

How about just about any song written by the Beatles? :P

I don't know that one outside of Futurama...

Also, I'm curious to how much more Elta wants to anger the English speaking world by saying "Stairway to Heaven" isn't a real song...

Old people always think that everybody knows about their pop culture. :dunno:

Perfy, I was waiting for John cage....

I can play Stairway to Heaven. I was referring to the patriotic/nursery room reference.

Probably guaranteed Dachs hasn't heard of Huey, Dewey, and Louie either, from a previous discussion here, so nope, not a song everyone knows either. Nice try though.
