IIRC it's Romanian regarding language, the 'band' is from Moldova, though. Though I fear Romanians might be insulted if you call this their best known songI'm sorry to bring this up, but isn't Dragostea din tei Romanian?

Unfortunately I have to say the band is actually Romanian - what you probably heard about them is that they come from the north-east of Romania, namely from the region called "Moldova". To be even more precise, from the "capital" of the region and second largest city in Romania, [wiki]Iasi[/wiki] (aka "Jassy", as it also happens to be one of the only 2 cities besides Bucharest to have an English name).
This is just the classic, normal confusion between Moldova the region, Moldova the country, and Moldova the supranational region (corresponding to the old Principality of Moldova which, after having been united with Romania, was completely teared apart at the end of WW2 - at the moment being split between three countries).
It's a result of the fact that the "Republic of Moldova" that we know today, which was formed in 1989 after the break up of the Soviet Union, had no right to call itself with such a name, since it was encompassing only about 35% of the old principality (namely the region called "Basarabia") and the capital - Iasi aka Jassy, as well as the core areas of the region were still in Romania.
It's extremely similar to the "Macedonia" naming dispute, except that it's not a dispute, it's just an accepted fact. So there's a country "Macedonia", but also a region in northern Greece called "Macedonia", which historically... [etc].![]()
Likewise, long story short, there's a country "Moldova", a region with the same name in Romania, and a supranational historical region spanning the whole of the Republic of Moldova, parts of Romania, and Ukraine.
But I'm threadjacking. Back on topic.
Hmm, I remembered some thing in the news when the song was new that the Moldovans were a bit pissed off because the big bad neighbour Romania had covered their song (Haiducci or whatever she's called) and were for some time more successful than the original. But my memory might be cheating on me

Oh crap, I was talking about the so-called "cover", not about the original. You're definitely right about the original.
And I though it's the unoffical underpass anthemEl Condor Pasa. An unofficial national anthem in Peru. This version is somewhat boring.
I first heard that song in my music class in the early-mid '70s. I've always thought it a beautiful song, if a bit sad.El Condor Pasa. An unofficial national anthem in Peru. This version is somewhat boring.

Most of the versions I've heard butcher the song in some manner. Apparently the song is easy to put in 500 tons of improvisation.
Same song butchered by hot Asian girls:
