Songs "everyone" knows

I'm sorry to bring this up, but isn't Dragostea din tei Romanian?
IIRC it's Romanian regarding language, the 'band' is from Moldova, though. Though I fear Romanians might be insulted if you call this their best known song ;)

Unfortunately I have to say the band is actually Romanian - what you probably heard about them is that they come from the north-east of Romania, namely from the region called "Moldova". To be even more precise, from the "capital" of the region and second largest city in Romania, [wiki]Iasi[/wiki] (aka "Jassy", as it also happens to be one of the only 2 cities besides Bucharest to have an English name).

This is just the classic, normal confusion between Moldova the region, Moldova the country, and Moldova the supranational region (corresponding to the old Principality of Moldova which, after having been united with Romania, was completely teared apart at the end of WW2 - at the moment being split between three countries).

It's a result of the fact that the "Republic of Moldova" that we know today, which was formed in 1989 after the break up of the Soviet Union, had no right to call itself with such a name, since it was encompassing only about 35% of the old principality (namely the region called "Basarabia") and the capital - Iasi aka Jassy, as well as the core areas of the region were still in Romania.

It's extremely similar to the "Macedonia" naming dispute, except that it's not a dispute, it's just an accepted fact. So there's a country "Macedonia", but also a region in northern Greece called "Macedonia", which historically... [etc]. ;)

Likewise, long story short, there's a country "Moldova", a region with the same name in Romania, and a supranational historical region spanning the whole of the Republic of Moldova, parts of Romania, and Ukraine.

But I'm threadjacking. Back on topic.

The thread is about what songs would be instantly recognized by the people living in a country, not songs from certain countries that are very famous abroad. The fact that it's the most famous Romanian pop song in the past 10 years ABROAD doesn't mean it is like that inside the country too. I can definitely think of songs that are more well-known than that one, but I still don't feel like any of them is famous enough for me to decide that "it's more common to see someone knowing this song than any other".

:ack: Hmm, I remembered some thing in the news when the song was new that the Moldovans were a bit pissed off because the big bad neighbour Romania had covered their song (Haiducci or whatever she's called) and were for some time more successful than the original. But my memory might be cheating on me :)

But I agree with you on the second part. The most famous song internationally from one country often isn't the most famous song within that country. The internationally best known swiss songs, such as there are, most certainly aren't the best known swiss songs within Switzerland.

Oh crap, I was talking about the so-called "cover", not about the original. You're definitely right about the original.

:mwaha: sometimes I wonder why I remember trivial crap like that factlet and forget important stuff instead

El Condor Pasa. An unofficial national anthem in Peru. This version is somewhat boring.
And I though it's the unoffical underpass anthem :mischief:

Most of the versions I've heard butcher the song in some manner. Apparently the song is easy to put in 500 tons of improvisation.

Same song butchered by hot Asian girls:

I first heard that song in my music class in the early-mid '70s. I've always thought it a beautiful song, if a bit sad.

Could somebody please post a link to Elta's YouTube songs? I think maybe I can't see them here because they're AdBlocked and I don't want to turn that off.

"This is the song that never ends, it just goes on and on my friends! Somebody, started singing, not knowing what it was, now they keep on singing on forever just because-"

I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves
everybody's nerves
everybody's nerves
Oh, I know a song that gets on everybody's nerves
and this is how it goes

Probably the right place to ask:

I'm looking for an Italian rap/hip-hop track that has a kid singing stuff in it.

^I don't think there's anything professional by a kid on the Italian scene.

@Mirc: your proposal is a good one. :)

It's not by a kid; it samples a kid singing while the guys rap over the sample

It might be Club Dogo, or something in that arena

Link to video.

Pretty well-known among the older generations and some of the younger...

Link to video.

And depending on your area, this may or may not be even more well-known than the previous one...

Gah. I feel so old. :( I got the first Sonic game when I had just developed the ability to walk/think/be functional without requiring parental aid for everything.

@nonconformist: Eee... let me ask around, ok? (I don't listen to rap much)
