Sons of Mars (Redux)

no probs, claims this turn are in the above post.

I read in one of your forwarded PMs you're not sure why your and Mathalamus' numbers don't seem to match up to everyone else's. Your infrastructure is higher than everyone else's and so you have much larger trade incomes.

Yeah, I figured that out late last night. Forgot infrastructure affected trade.

What's the prov:civic ratio?

I'm 99% sure the number of provinces you can support is your Civics Level^2. Upgrading to C6 should, therefore, give you an additional eleven provinces of breathing room.

Indeed. It's squared.

Balanced out by the fact that you can only upgrade one level per turn. :p

The Adventures of Patriot Xiang Wuji - I

uXQpjHr.jpg

Qing Beijing, House of Vice-Governor of Beijing, Han Wung

The Emperor of the Qing Empire, Kangxi, has decided, in order to appease the Han Chinese people in his Empire, to appoint a pro-Manchu Han Chinese, named Han Wung, as Vice-Governor of Beijing. Han was a former Ming official, with the rank of Grand Minister (Prime Minister) of the State, but when the Manchus invaded China, he surrendered to them and has since obeyed them faithfully. Although he had not been given an official position of great importance, he served very faithfully the Manchus and helped them chase down Han Chinese patriots and crush anti-Qing revolts in Qing China.

Such treachery and collaboration with the Barbarians that occupy China could not be tolerated any more. So, the Taoist Priest and Patriot Xiang Wuji has decided to assassinate Han, as a warning to the Han Chinese traitors who are willing to serve the Barbarian Manchus. Xiang's martial arts, swordplay and internal energy are profound and second to none. Xiang has also mastered the 'Hand of Death' technique, as well as the 'Red Jade Dragon' Swordplay. So, late in the night, Xiang sneaks into Han's house.

Once he enters the house, he shouts "Traitor, die!!". Hearing the noise, five Qing soldiers, armed with swords, and three bodyguards, unarmed, charge towards Xiang. The first bodyguard tries to kick Xiang with his right leg, but Xiang dodges the kick, grabs the man's leg, breaks it and then punches his right fist on the man's face, killing him. The second bodyguard tries to punch his fist on Xiang's stomach, but he jumps on the air, avoiding the kick, lands behind the man and kicks him with a powerful kick on the back, killing him. The third bodyguard pulls out a knife and charges at Xiang, but Xiang dodges the attacks, grabs the man by the hair and punches with all his strength his right palm on the man's face, killing him.

The five Qing soldiers, with their swords in their hands, also charge at Xiang. The first soldiers tries to cut off Xiang's head, but he dodges the sword and then punches his right fist on the man's throat, killing him. The other two soldiers also try to kill Xiang with their swords, but he jumps on the air when they charge at him, causing them to fall on the ground. When Xiang lands back on the ground, he grabs the two men from their hair and collides their heads, breaking them. The other two soldiers look in amazement and fear, and shout for help. Hearing the noise and the shout for help, twenty Qing soldiers, armed with spears, come to help their comrades.

Xiang then pulls out his 'Red Jade Dragon' Sword, a double-edged straight sword, which is carved from a single solid piece of jade. The blade is 80 centimeters (31 inches) in length. The weight of the sword is approximately 900 grams (2 pounds). A hilt protects the hand of wielder from an opposing blade. The shape of the hilt is short wings pointing forward. A handle behind the hilt accommodates the grip of one hand plus two fingers of the other hand.

The end of the handle is finished with a pommel for balance, to prevent the handle from sliding through the hand if the hand's grip should be loosened, and for striking or trapping the opponent as opportunity required — such as in "withdrawing" techniques. The blade itself is divided into three sections for leverage in different offensive and defensive techniques. The tip of the blade is the jiànfeng, meant for stabbing, slashing, and quick percussive cuts. The jiànfeng curves smoothly to a point. The middle section is the zhongren and is used for a variety of offensive and defensive actions: cleaving cuts, draw cuts, and deflections. The section of blade closest to the hilt is the jiàngen and is mainly used for defensive actions. The blade features subtle profile taper (decreasing width). Upon the Jade Sword, a red Dragon is carved.

So, armed with the 'Red Jade Dragon', Xiang shouts "Die, barbarians!!!" and charges at the Qing soldiers. One after the other, they are massacred. Xiang quickly dismembers them and cuts off their heads, digs out their eyes, cuts in half their chest and kills all of them. Hearing the shouts and cries of those dying, thirty more Qing soldiers come to the house and surround Xiang, but they are also easily killed. After this massacre, Xiang charges into the house's rooms and searches for Han. After searching for a few minutes, he finds him in his office, preparing to leave.

"You....you...you!" Han tries to say. "What do you want?"

"Your head!" Xiang replies. "Die, despicable traitor. I will take revenge for all the patriots you have killed."

Han pulls out his sword, a dadao, which has a broad blade three feet long, long hilt meant for two-handed use, and a weight-forward balance. Han attacks with his sword and aims at Xiang's head. His attack is blocked by the jiàngen part Xiang's Jade Sword. Han attacks again but his sword is deflected by the zhongren part of the Jade Sword. Xiang, then, goes on the offensive and uses the tip of the blade, jiànfeng, to slash thrice Han's chest. He then uses again the jiànfeng to stab Han's stomach, causing him to let his sword fall on the ground. Xiang then quickly kicks twice Han's head and with a swift move cuts off the man's head with his blade.

He then sets the house on fire, grabs Han's head by the hair and heads towards the Qing Imperial Palace. Xiang is able to sneak into the Palace, and at the Forbidden City's wall, he impales Han's head with the note 'This will be the fate of all traitors'. When Emperor Kangxi wakes up next morning and sees the impaled head, he shouts "Xiang, I will get you one day!"

In defence of the Holy Places, we propose a perpetual alliance between the Vicar of Christ and the custodian of the Holy Land, that all aggressors who would profane the lands where Christ walked shall be vanquished. Yet, the Church thirsts not for blood, and so we would ask that no act of war should be required of us should your Kingdom seek the conquest and conversion of the heathen turks, although we attest that should they in their hubris attack you our swift assistance shalt fly to your defence.

His Majesty, with the full support of the senate, has decreed that the merchants of Alexandria-Jerusalem will have a special place in the marketplaces of Sicily, and that the country of Alexandria-Jerusalem will be a preferred trade partner.

We hope this trade benefit both countries in the long term.

We would like to formally thank you for allowing our merchants these granted privileges. May the trade between the United Kingdoms and Sicily ensure the future growth of our respective countries.

The Kingdoms of Alexandria and Jerusalem, as true and devout followers of God, accept this proposal of an alliance. We would like to assure His Holiness we have, at this present time, no ambitions of the lands of the Turks and instead wish to consolidate and develop lands already brought under our banner. This alliance will be one for united security, not aggression.

King Theodoros II Laskaris, of the Kingdom of Cyprus, request a defensive pact with the Papal from any Muslim nation that seeks to annex the wealthy island of Cyprus into their Realm.

in exchange, should you wish to organize a crusade against any Muslim nation, we shall participate, or grant you basing rights in Cyprus, depending on which Muslim nation you are going against.

What you are proposing is not so much a defensive pact in which common defence is agreed, but rather papal protection for your Kingdom. This we are prepared to commit too out of paternal care for our wayward brethren in the east only if you place the Church in Cyprus as of old under the Papal Primacy, and only if you pledge fealty as Our vassal as befits the request you are making.

sincerely

you cannot place an Eastern orthodox Church of Cyprus under the Papal Primacy, as that basically means converting to Catholicism.

we are fine with being a vassal, though.

Than no agreement can be reached, for it would be a scandal for the Vicar of Christ to protect a Kingdom that obstinately and contumaciously rejects his lawful God-given authority as visible earthly head of the Church of God with primacy over all other patriarchs and bishops.

~ Julius III. PP

ooc: It would be unbecoming of the Pope to protect you, when you obstinately and contumaciously reject his authority by persisting in supporting schism. So unless you formally convert by recognising the Popes primacy over the Church in Cyprus, no protection shall be granted from Rome. Not sure why you came to me anyway seeing as there is no imminent threat from any muslim state to your sovereignty.

Yes, why don't we dig up old wounds and then rub the dirt into them? What a wonderful idea!
