SP7 - The Pointy Stick Aztecs OPEN PTW 1.21f (Emperor)

or, may i suggest the bowman? 2 attack, 2 defense, AND two movement make for a great early UU. maybe you could make another open SG for us not as adept players (me) and you could just step in if things get hairy.

Bowmen do NOT have 2 movement. They are a very under rated UU, but they don't have 2 movement.

are you sure? i could have sworn. opening editor now...

BoG's a stupid head. if they did have two movement then that would be kick @$$. i know what it was. i was playing as celts and attacking bowmen and I retreated and for some reason i thought that they retreated. but they still are underated.

Maybe you red stuff on the Civ3 website. Many of the UU's had diffrent abilities in their original concept taht was up on the site and was changed at release. I do believe the Bowman was originally concieved as a 2/1/2 unit instead of the 2/2/1 unit it became.

Yeah, they did 'originally' have 2/1/2, but I guess they realized that was already taken up by war chariots. They really would be powerful if they had 2/1/2: being able to build them for 20 shields, so early, with no resource requirements (and resource requirements are pretty substantial this early), and not have the jungle/mountain restrictions of war chariots would make for a GREAT uu.

But no, they get the defense thing instead. I've never tried out bowmen, but they would be cool to try. I definitely know they couldn't do anything like has been done in this game, but with shorter distance to cover, they might be ok. Still, I'm not sure if you'd still want to build them once you can get swords and horses.

A 2/2/2 unit would be cool. A horse replacement could be given those stats. It wouldn't be as powerful as MWs, but would still be impressive. The Zulu can simulate it though, with impi/horse stacks, which is also something I'd love to play with at some point!

The wonderful thing about Bowmen isn't what they can do by themselves, though they have possibilities early on since they are 2/2 at a first row tech, don't need a resource, and don't need escorts in the ancient era, but rather what they can do Invention! You build tons of these little guys to serve as "Spears". Same 20 shields as a spear but with a 2nd offensive point. At feudalism you build pikes, then at Invention, you get a HUGE stack of longbows for a lower cost upgrade than the Warrior to MDI path. On a small map on Emperor, you can often decimate 2 civilizations in a blink this way.

Heck, you don't even HAVE to upgrade ALL the bowmen right away, as they make decent defenders for a while, great at taking out those hurt units as well since they stand some chance early out in the open.

Are they as good as Jags? No. As good as the Horseman/Impi combo, no. Are they really useful when used properly, heck yeah.

If the AI only had a real clue how to use longbows Babalon would be a scary opponent.

Gotta totally agree with Todd, the lil' bowmen are some of my favourites as well. Early bowmen rush anyone ?

Guess what Todd ? I AM PATCHED 1.21 ! Alellujah !

Great game fellows. Didn't even know it was possible to so completely dominate the AIs that fast.
Rush almost like in an RTS :)

Yea, just in time to go On Deck in RBP7 :)

Thanks for the very fun game, SirP. I'll have to download the save and add it to my high scores.

Might be my fastest domination win. Certainly not my fastest conquest -- but not too far off. BC wins are, in my experience, possible but BARELY, requiring good luck as well as very good play. We had the very good play but not quite awesome luck. Being next to Carthage being one of the not-so-lucky things.

Such excellent play and really no discussion of tactics. Go forth and destroy! ;)

@Charis: I intentionally got Feudalism ASAP to prevent any nasty swords from being built.... And both Babylon and the Chicken Wench's new capital fell to jags, not anything else!

Arathorn

Yeah we did get domination pretty fast, didn't we? Jags really do rule! Glad you enjoyed the game Arathorn.

My attack on Carthage got me thinking: what's best to attack with first in that situation? So, I wrote a small utility program which calculates the best unit to attack with in such a situation. It can be found here

Just thought I'd mention it here, since the inspiration for it came from playing this game.
