Space-1: War While Waiting

Pre Turn
Change Ephesus to worker
All settlers produced will go to new continent as soon as there is room on a boat.
2 Greek horses attack & Retreat
6 Sipahi move from Izmit into jungle
Rome – Infantry – Infantry
Madrid – Settler – settler
Niagara – Cav – Infantry
Bergen – settler – settler
Cumae – temple – infantry
Pompeii Battlefield Medicine – infantry
Lugdunum – destroyer – destroyer
Lutetia – artillery – artillery
Handyaugusta – infantry – infantry

Turn 1 1752
Lots of pollution. As workers finish chores I'll clean it up.
Move workers around
Upgrade 2 transports
Bomb Sipahi
Cav kill 2 redlined Greek cav
Kill 5 of 6 Sipahi – leave 1 so our unit is not exposes to counter attack
Fortify homeland defense artillery near Rome.
Pull 2 infantry from Rome for overseas duty
New Rome founded – within artillery range of the Ottomans :D
Egypt alone has 14 infantry next to New Rome. I bombed a few, but several may attack next turn.

IBT
Guess the bombard @ New Rome had an impact. No attacks & a few infantry went limping home.
Tarentum – inf. – inf.
Nineveh riots – hire clown

H.A. – inf. – inf.
Jerusalem – arty. – arty.
Seleucia – hospital – stock exchange

Turn 2 1754 AD
Move workers.
I re-arranged the boats so transports reach Aydin in 4 turns. This way you can unload the units on the transport from inside the city and they can unload and fight on the same turn.
Workers moved to connect New Rome & Aydin.
Transport with 2 empty armies leaves Syracuse for Aydin. Happy Pillaging N Pike. :D
Three empty transports head back to Syracuse.
Army of Anthony moved from Aydin to new Rome & Kills 1 infantry. Bomb a bunch of infantry near new Rome. No red lined, so I’ll wait until redlined to attack infantry with cav.
Slider to 40% still get MP in 2 turns.

IBT
3 Greek cav + 1 infantry land near Babylon
Egypts infantry + some cav attack New Rome. We kill 8 units and there are 2 retreats. I think we killed 6 infantry + 2 cav. Our Army in New Rome is now about ½ strength. Several infantry in the city back up the army. Usually you kill more AI on defense this time of the game than on offense. I plan to only attack red line wounded AI infantry with fully healed cav.

Turn 3 1756 AD
Slider to 40% - MP in 1
Upgrade 1 more galleon to transport.
Kill red lined Sipahi
Kill red lined Guerrilla
Army of Anthony kills 2 infantry
Cav kills redlined infantry
Wake 8 arty. Near Rome & move to Babylon. Hunt around for elites, kill the invaders but no leaders.
Wake cavalry army in Aydin & send him off to Greece to pillage. The Ottoman area is blocked, so he cannot go that way.

IBT
Ottomans bomb our home. Mostly corrupt cities except for Antium. Sending destroyers to kill them.
AI attacks on New Rome. We win 8 and lose 2.
Nicomedia – hospital - inf.
Antium – courthouse – bank

Jerusalem – inf. – hospital

Turn 4 1758 AD
Slider up tanks in 6 and +30GPT
Hurry walls 7 workers on the new continent.
Upgrade a couple more Galleons. We now have 12 transports, which should be enough. Flight will come in soon enough and they will become less useful. We sill need them for armies, artillery, workers 7 settlers, but we can fly the tanks over.
Kill redlined Sipahi – get a leader to form Ted’s Terrific Pillagers.
Attacks on redlined infantry. Mostly with cav.
Killing AI opened a hole near new Rome where I send a cav army through to pillage ottomans.
By pillaging Greece we can get the ivory, & then return home.

IBT
3 AI die attacking new Rome
More AI bombardment near Veii and other corrupt cities. Destroyers are on the way to kill Ai ironclads near Veii.
Rome – Inf. – inf.
Niagara – inf. SE
Pompeii- inf. – inf.
Aydin – worker – artillery
Pisae – market – bank
F.P> - inf. – inf.
Ephesus – walls – barracks
Arretium – walls – barracks
Palmyra – temple – inf.
New Rome – walls – barracks

Turn 5 1760 AD
Bomb to redline several infantry next to new Rome, then get off a couple of shots at the Ottoman city.
Summary of our attacks on red lined infantry on grassland: Wins 10 Loses 2. We lost 2 units that were 3 to 1 favorites.

The wins punched a hole in the infantry stacks around New Rome to send a second and third cav army to pillage. We now have 3 cav pillaging armies on the move. One is going into the Ottoman lands & the two other to Greece & Egypt. :D

Notes:
Homeland defense: There are 8 Arty + 3 cav fortified next to Rome.
Transports: 2 are in Syracuse you can move next turn. One already has some units in it and the other is empty. There are transports (full) going to and (empty) coming from the other continent. Look at the little picture box to see which way the transport needs to go.
AI navy near Veii: Destroyers near Veii are for killing of these guys. If they stray too close you may get artillery shots at them. They stayed 3 tiles way during my turns.
Pollution showed up every turn.
There are 2 brand new infantry armies near New Rome. I’d stick 1 in New Rome (so the other army can heal) and send one off with a couple of cavalry to pillage.
You can rush a barracks in New Rome next turn.
There is a stack of 8 arty + 2 infantry on a hill near Aydin. I’d leave them there until you get a road from Aydin to Arretium done.
There are some workers on transports on the way you can use to build roads.
Once you pillage the roads around Istanbul + Athens, AI trade deals will be broken and unhappiness should knock production down quite a bit. You can send the infantry armies to “guard” Istanbul + Athens to make sure they do not get hooked back up, and then pillage the countryside with the cav armies.
Tanks are due in 5 turns, 240 gold in the bank +19 GPT.
Probably mostly defense + pillaging until the tanks come in. All 5 turns I used artillery to hit Ai infantry. The last turn I did get 2 shots at the Ottoman city of Iznik.
Avoid the temptation to attack a fortified yellow (2 hp) infantry with a veteran cav. You are an underdog. (48/52) If the 2 hp infantry is not fortified you are a slim favorite, but I'd still wait for a red line battle.

Edit - please cover the worker on the spices with an couple of infantry before you hit enter. Thanks. :)

The battlefield of New Rome 1760 AD

Yes. We look well placed.

2 Ottoman cities are sitting on oil, but the Greeks appear to have one source only. Disconnecting the Ottoman oil cities from their trade network is going to be a pain. So I would recommend going after the Greeks first until we have a good number of tanks.

It should be plain sialing from here... unless we lose the vote

My apologies, Space. Due to the complexities of getting everyone together, my family will be celebrating Christmas on December 29, so I don't have a hope in :devil2: of playing in the next few days. I'll have to ask for a skip.

Karasu: what can I say, just that these are hectic days... ;)

I managed to play my turns:

Goals:
Extend foothold.
Secure peninsula.
Maximise elite victories for the UN leader.

Pre-turn:
Move Inf to cover the worker as requested.
Use some of the stacked arties to hurt the nearby Ironclads.
Switch Ninevh's entertainer to taxman.

IT
Greece attacks our Army and is almost successful, the Army retreats.
Reyavik riots and gets a taxman.

1762AD - turn 1
Hurry Rax in New Rome for 76g.
Pillage Ivory near Herakleia.
Destroy Temple, Bank and Barracks in Iznik and it's down 2 sizes as well.
Move an arty stack to Mugla.
We have 5 elite wins this round, no losses.

IT
The Greek land 2 Infs (1 elite!) and 2 Cavs near Babylon.
Agrippina riots, it gets a taxman.

1764AD - turn 2
Bombard the Greek stack, Infs now 2/5 and 2/4. Dealing with the Greeks gets us to upgrades to elite. :)
1 Cav gets killed trying to kill a Egyptian 1/4 Inf, it's the only loss this turn.
Move the slider back to still get Tanks in 3 *and* make an income.

IT
Egypt attacks New Rome and fails. :)

1766AD - turn 3
Iznik is down to size 1, will invade next turn.
Much movement to put our troops into position.

IT
The AI has decided Babylon must fall and 3 stacks are landed on our coast!
An Egyptian Ironclad bombards New Rome and destroys the Barracks!
The Ottoman decide to attack with their defending force?!

1768AD - turn 4
Iznik captured it had only 2 Infs left, I clicked 'keep it' before I knew it. :( Oh well, we have enough settlers to replace it later, just try to keep the really important troops outside. We captured 3 additional Arties.
Killed 3 Sipahi near New Rome.
Killed the Ottoman stack on near Babylon, hurt the Greek stack that still has 2 fit vet Cavs and hurt the lone Egypt Inf.
I can't get Mugla this turn, but prolly can do next turn.
A nice stack is ready for Herakleia.

IT
The Ottoman try to take back Iznik and kill 1 Inf but 2 Sipahi die.
The age of Tanks is arrived! :D Start researching Radio.

1770AD - turn 5
Mugla falls and is razed, a settler moves in to found on the Iron hill.
Again dealing the invasion gets us 2 extra elite Infs.
The Arties in New Rome are split into 2 groups: 1 to deal with the Ottoman, 1 to hurt Corinth.
The stack that was used for Mugla can go south to aid in the conquest of Herakleia.

The current situation:
the red arrow shows to loaction of the settler, the black the arties that can reach Corinth, the purple dot possible aggresive city locations (there are 4 settlers in Aydin).

Oh, the upload server is down again. :( I'll post the image and the save later.

And what better way to fill a new years eve :p

I'll play on the first.... This isn't a got it as the uploads server is down again.

I haven't played civ in over a week.... hope I can remember which buttons to press.

Greebley: The shortest route to Fission, that was my consideration. As others mentioned the only way we can lose this is someone building the UN before us. But I admit tech-choosing is not the strongest point of my game, so please elaborate. :)

I am also asking to learn more :)

Ya, that is a good point and one I wasn't thinking about. If we don't get the UN, it could be very bad. We could alleviate this by starting a prebuild for it.

The reason I like flight so much is that you get instant access to the far continent. Boats take a while to get units across. With an airport we can rush airports on the first turn after gaining flight and then attack with tanks on the second turn. We don't risk our units on route in boats and can start using our tanks 4 turns earlier.

I guess it depends on how close the opposition is to getting to the modern age. Getting tanks across sooner is not worth risking a loss. If however, we can slip in flight with little or no risk, it is a very nice tech.

Plenty of progress over the holiday. Good work everyone

On the research Issue: we have to get both to reach the next age so stick with Radio then pick Flight :)

I think we might benefit from moving the Palace to Agrippina or Treviri or is it too late in the game to even consider this?

We've certainly made better progress on the second continent than I expected and I'm sure that mad-bax has improved our position. For a game where we started with no Iron I think we're doing pretty well :)

Ted

Errmm... I have a good excuse for being late. My boiler packed up on new years eve and I have no hot water or heating and it's around -2C at night. So I have been shipping my family and associated belongings (clothes, toys, kitchen sink etc) to my parents. I am writing this in a ski jacket and gloves. :D

Will you let me off 'till tomorrow please? I promise to play no matter how badly I smell.

On a completely unrelated matter...
Anyone fancy helping me write a mod? Nothing fancy, but I'd like to do it properly with pedia etc. I don't want to clog up this thread with the flood of responses so just PM me if you fancy it.
Again I just want to emphasise that I don't intend making it my lifes work... just for fun.

That kitchen sink must have been quite a job. :D As long as you don't play any fishy moves, I don't mind the smell too much. And you shouldn't be distracted too much now, either. :D

But seriously, I hope you get things sorted out and warm soon. That is no way to start a new year. :(
