Space 5 - Old hands can be newbs too, getting back in the game

... Any thoughts/preferences on civ, map etcetera?

I'm happy with Montezuma. As this is a learning game it might be worth going up one in map-size to Large and set the difficulty to Emperor. These are purely gut feelings and have no basis in experience or reality

Just my (random) thoughts.

I just thought that Large might give us some "wiggle room" if we made a balls up in the early stages :mischief: But Standard would be fine if you prefer.

Ted

You definitely have a point there, although I don't know how smart this AI is. What's the chance of a run-away civ in a remote area, while we are trying to figure out how to press B to found a city...? *looking at no-one in particular* :mischief:

The Steam updater gives you some DLC for free now. I don't think you can avoid it. Monte and Standard are fine. Does any particular topology appeal? Maybe Continents?

Agree with Alan. I support continents - we should learn about boats without being consumed with them as we would on archipelago.

Continents & Standard fine with me.

Ted

Civ5 can really bog down the average computer if we go with a larger map. Standard size can even get tough in the end game.

Agree with the map settings in the discussion.

Just want to point out that traveling over water in Civ5 is very different than past versions. Units do not need transports, they have their own "built in" boats. :)

edit - standard pace is probably best to start with.

The suspense is killing me  :mischief:

Ted

OK,

I'll sharpen my blowpipe!

What a nice crowd gathered here! :)

I'll be lurking, I'm way too experienced compared to you newbs...2000hrs +.

For your settings, don't choose bigger maps than standard, the game will get seriously busy in the later game. And for a map, I would've picked Fractal as it is a mystery map, where you can get a long snaky pangaea or a few smaller continents. My fav script, but continents are ok too, if you don't get the runaway on the other continent.

Emperor is a good start, I actually prefer to play that than higher levels as Immortal is a huge step compared to Emperor.

After this rant, I wish you good luck and you might read my up on my feeble games, when you are in this subforum. :)
