The next century will look at us and laugh hysterically at our complete inability to manage resource consumption and human population figures.

Then they will probably weep at the future we gave them.

Interesting the article says they might be able to go as fast as 10 times the speed of light with a Voyager 1 sized amount of fuel or something. That's a little over Warp 2.

Just remember that at one time, pundits were bewailing the future of N.Y. City being
overwhelmed by traffic. Not so much the horses, but what they left behind.

Evidently it was growing exponentially, and the cleaners couldn't keep up.

Some issues take care of themselves. For everything else, hire an engineer.

Ehh, mostly conjecture. And that on top of a largely theoretical device, too.

I'd take the good and the bad with some salt. That said, if I recall correctly I believe NASA has officially greenlit research into this technology.

As well they should. And yeah, it's not well established at all. But it's good to see both sides of le coin.

inb4 Winner goes on an anti-Sci-fi/anti-science fantasy tirade. :mischief:

Yeah  I am not anti-sci-fi, because I love sci-fi. I just hate when people write sci-fi and pretend it's real and about to happen very soon. Also, whatever Discovery-associated media publish is probably a totally misinterpreted parody of science journalism.

For some reason I get slightly annoyed when people bring this up in discussions about space and spaceflight. The reason is that I find it silly to talk about this as if it was around the corner while in reality we haven't even left the Earth-Moon system yet. Or in other words, it is as if Columbus was talking about an expedition to Mars while trying to persuade the Spanish royals to fund his insane voyage to India.

I feel it damages the credibility of the space-fan community (as if it wasn't low already). FTL is totally out of question for centuries to come. People may try making it work on whiteboards by conjuring up exotic forms of matter with negative mass in the same way I may write a fantasy short story, and that's fine. Just don't bring it up while trying to sell space to the people ;)
