So I was looking through the Game Database in search of where they stored the % of the cities that fall based off dificulty, and stumbled upon this:

I'm 100% sure that this is not made by a mod (HR_Denominations is for example), and the more I think about it, the more sense it makes. Hero units would make sense. And I checked, all 3 tables are fully empty and not referencing any current game (I have all the DLCs).

This also confirms what we previously saw with the "Lifespan" in one of the leaked chinese videos that played as Simon Bolivar. (there is a Lifespan row in this table).

Given we know the Economic mode is coming with the Vietnam/Kublai pack in 4 months time, we'll either see this as the next game mode or the last game mode. DISCUSS!

Looks like the "Heros" can create a new great work called "epic". Makes sense.

Oh awesome. I always thought something similar would be cool for an Irish (or Norse) civ. Though I was thinking more along the lines of a Bard/Skald unit that functioned like a weaker GG but could retire to create a great work that was stronger depending on the amount of experience in nearby battles that had happened.

The November patch will add more great people. Is it possible that this is a new type of great people instead of a game mode, or even a game mode that use the great people mechanic to implement these Heroes, similar to how secret societies use the governors UI?

There were screenshots months ago of regular military units with "lifespan" so I doubt it's a great person thing.

Cool. Atleast now we know those screenshots where legit.

I'm guessing this is in the warfare themed game mode. Can't wait to find out what it all means

Wasn’t one of the stats for a unit in one of the screenshots “reknown” or something like that?

If they are related I would image the first time a civ enter a Golden Age they will receive one.

They could be units that are unlocked through the great people UI
I lean towards this - kind of a hybrid unit/Great Person. Perhaps a Great Person type (unlocked through the UI) that can also engage in combat.
These columns in particular I find interesting and what they could mean:
  • CreationProjectType
  • ArtifactGreatWorkType
  • EpicGreatWorkType

I'm thinking their going to be like a super unit, probably limited to one per type. And they will only last for a finite amount of turns.

And you will probably have to just through some hoops to activate heroes.

But when you do, you'd better be ready to exploit them before their lifespan runs out.

There are also unused tables that reference GPP from specialists and Citizen names that have been in the database for a long time, but these features have never been implemented. So, I would not get my hope too high...
On the other hand, the Chinese screenshot and the fact that it has been recently added to the database increase the odds that this feature will actually be implemented this time...

Pirates

There is a file PiratesScenario_FrontEndText.xml
<Text>Automatically find and join a Pirates game.[NEWLINE][NEWLINE]Pirates is Civilization VI's spin on Sid Meyer's Pirates. Play as a swashbuckling pirate vying for supremecy on the seven seas.</Text>

Or could be something different. Here is about heroes:
<Replace Name="HERO_DISCOVER_CHANCE_CITY_STATE_SUZERAIN" Value="100" />
<Replace Name="HERO_DISCOVER_CHANCE_GOODY_HUT" Value="50" />
<Replace Name="HERO_DISCOVER_CHANCE_MEET_CITY_STATE" Value="100" />
<Replace Name="HERO_DISCOVER_CHANCE_PER_CITY_STATE_ENVOY" Value="25" />
Probably GreatPeople screen won't be used for that.
