I'm amazed that it's taking over a minute for your PCs. I thought my seven year old Mac was nearing the end of its useful life, but it beats those times. What CPUs and memory are you guys running?

Strange, My PC is only 3.75 years old. If you mean RAM by memory, mine is 256 IIRC. But I don't know very much about it... :crazyeye:

3.2GHz pentium 4 with around 1gig of RAM

My watch was a bit cheaper though. Maybe that's the dodgy piece of equipment.

Re. your earlier question: No - GLs and golden ages are not included in the vanilla replay.

My seven year old Mac *has* had a processor transplant to up its speed, and a memory upgrade, so it's perhaps a bit of a "ringer". But it's still not a patch on what I could buy from Apple now, and it falls well below the minimum requirements for Civ4.

Yes, I meant RAM. 256 MBytes is a bit low for Civ3, but it depends a lot on what OS you are running as well. Do you know what version of Windows you have, and what processor and speed? Usually available if you right click on My Computer and select Properties.

@Tone:  Yes, let's blame your watch. Surely a 3.5 GHz P4 can blow a 1 GHz G4 out of the water? Memory's the same, give or take 10%

Does this answer your questions?

I think the reason that the Mac is doing better than the PC is that the save game comes from a Mac.

Really? I'm running Windows XP on a AMD Duron 700 Mhz with 128 Mb of RAM (SDRAM BTW), and it runs Civ3, Civ3 PTW, C3C, and CIV4!!!

No, because I can't see anything from the uploads server yet. But never mind, it'll return soon, I hope.

The save file format is identical for Macs and PCs, so that has no effect.

128 MBytes of SDRAM is probably the video memory. If you are running Civ4 I bet you have a lot more main memory than that.

@choxorn: I can see your screenshot now the server is back in business here. Your PC would certainly improve with another 256 MBytes or more of main memory. It's the best and cheapest upgrade you can buy. Windows XP Pro plus Civ3 will more than fill your current capacity on their own, resulting in a fair bit of paging of data to disk.

Is RAM main memory? I don't know, but it plays civ3 just fine. however, it does take up quite a bit of the RAM- the computer is slow for a minute after I close it.

Lurker:

Mem is not the bottleneck on Civ3, cpu is as the maps get larger or have lots of cities and units.

Civ4 is about the video card as much as anything.

Still that is right at the low end of systems for even XP, let alone doing anything. I would not suggest you join any games with a huge maps or even bigger as that will be painful. :D

Dude, I know what I'm talking about! I am really good at computers. I even got to the international RM stage of the computer science olympiad, only 200 people from 28 million inhabitants (28 million and not 22 because it's Romania + Moldavia). Is it possible to take a screenshot from before Windows starts? I'm guessing no, but if I could I would have shown you the memory testing from the beggining.

My graphics card is a GeForce 2 ABIT.

Do you believe me now?

Oh, and I can prove that I can run Civ4. If you want, I can post a Civ4 save with any civ, map type, and any other option you want. Or I can take a screenshot where the human player is called Mirc or Mircea.

I believe you. I'm surprised, but I believe it :D

Lurker:
I believed you, but it is funny as lots of video cards have more memory than that. I have 256MB on my X800. Anyway it must be a bear on some turns.

Yeah, sometimes it's slow, I can't play Large, Huge maps, and late game Standard maps. :(

I remember the first time I heard of 256 Mb of memory for a video card I was... amazed! :D

I am planning on getting an AMD Athlon 3000+ Dual Core, with 1 Gb of RAM, 120 Gb of hard disk space, any motherboard with socket 939, and any video card I can afford after buying the rest... But I have to decide if I do this or go to a guitar contest in France, where I don't have really big chances of prize (as there is only 1, not 3 as in the normal ones). However if I do go there and am finalist or get the prize of the public I will return with 1000 euro, and if I am the winner I get back with 4000 euro and a great brand new guitar. I have to decide whether to risk or not.

people- I think we've spammed this thread enough talking about this stuff. I don't think it needs to be discussed any more.
