ST4 - Emperor Tweak

Hi all,

Thanks for the invite but the free time I thought I had to jump into some SG's has vanished due to other matters (house shopping & stuff), so I won't be able to join this game. Sorry.

By the way, what is RCP? Looks like a fancy name for the ultra-cheese ICS tactic that people used to break the previous Civ titles. Just thought I'd ask. :)

Hi Ozymandous,

Thanks for checking in, although it's too bad you can't play. I understand SG overload - I'm refraining from joining any new ones right now too.

You can find the link to RCP here . It's actually very clever in my opinion, and DaviddesJ did a great job in figuring it out. IT's just a bit exploitative is all.

Hi guys,

Just to let you know that I'm away this weekend from the 1st Aug to the 4th Aug inclusive.

Please autoskip me until the 5th Aug.

regards

Ted

Im sorry to let you down but my PC really isn't up to playing a SG at the moment. It crashed along with my game, my report and dot map. Please consider me skipped until further notice while I try to bash my PC into order.

Good luck to Lord_all_mighty. I won't say anything as I have played future turns, but your turns might be quite interesting.

:(

Hi Snaproll,

Thanks for the link. I would expect this to be frowned upon at the closer distances, much like ICS is for the Epics, so you might want to keep that in mind if you ever compete in any of the RB games. :)

Jmansell: Sorry to hear about your computer problems. That must be frustrating. Hopefully it clears up soon.

TedJackson: Have fun on your vacation. I don't think you'll get skipped as a result, but I guess it depends on how fast the rest of us play.

Ozy: Don't worry - I'm the one who decided not to use it for this game, and I won't use it in any other games. I'm firmly against it as you can see from my other posts. I do think it's more clever than an ICS, but that doesn't mean I think it should be used.

OK here's the current roster:

Current Roster:
Dark Savant
Puzzlinon
TedJackson - Just played
Jmansell - Skipped due to computer failure
Lord_all_Mighty - Up!
Snaproll - On deck

I have an idea that I thought I'd get your comments on - I'm thinking about posting a summary paragraph in the first post that I will update each turn with the current date and a synopsis of th current situation. This isn't so much for those of us playing, but more for lurkers so that they can get a good feeling for the current state of the game. I know I've often wished for this when lurking (which I do a lot). I'll go ahead and try it now and you guys can let me know what you think.

I've just had a look at your "Management Summary" and think it's a very good idea :)

Well I got my turns done. I lost track of what turn I wan on considering the "Always wait at the end of turn" wasn't checked, which I did, but that didn't effect it, so I didn't have the oppurtunity to do much mm.

Anyway here are the things of importence:

We complete Writing, I set for Literature.
We recieve IW which I get from the Mongols for Writing+CB+8g
I found 2 more cities, we are now able to build the Forbidden Palace.

We have no Iron in our territory, but their is one in Chartes' Border expansion. Unfortunately though the Mongols already have founded a city their. I sense a war coming :)

My apologies if these turns seem a bit sloppy.

Ok Lord_all_mighty, I'll take a look at the save and play tonight or tomorrow. I'll make some comments after looking at the save.

Any idea how many turns you played? It's very important we keep track of that. I'm not sure I understand why it wasn't waiting at the end of the turn even after you checked the box. Try to fix that problem/make sure you've got it set right before your next turn. Trading seems good though. :goodjob:

Current Roster:
Dark Savant - On Deck
Puzzlinon
TedJackson
Jmansell - Skipped due to computer failure
Lord_all_Mighty - Just Played
Snaproll - Up!

If anyone else wants to look at the save and make comments feel free - I won't be able to look at it for awhile. Also, I'm still tinkering with my game summary on the front page. Comments are welcome

For the curious:

st-1400.JPG

Red circles are iron.
There's ivory - a bunch of them - on the western peninsula.
There's one mongol city somewhere we can't see.

We're researching Lit, instead of MM, and it's pretty far along - 10 turns to go vs 24 for MM. The western arm is pretty nice territory, so we can probably wait a bit for MM.

Temmy is up the Wheel on us... we don't know what sort of 4-legged beasties might turn up. Histo says we're about twice the power of the Mongols; both cultures are palace-only

Chartres cannot take the iron via border expansion -- the iron is within the first 8 squares of Kazan and will thus always be under Mongol control unless we manage to flip, capture, or raze Kazan. We thus don't have any iron -- not a big deal, since it looks like we can get away with continuing to peacefully expand; just bear in mind we're not going to do a warrior -> sword upgrade.

Paris should be producing workers and settlers nonstop if it isn't working on a wonder, and it can do so without ever dropping below size 4. I know some people don't like micromanagement, but this early in the game and for a city like our capital, it helps enormously.

Turn 0 – Pre-turn – 1400 BC – Change Paris to settler. MM it to produce 5 fpt again – this city should always stay at +5 fpt. Change preference to always wait at end of turn (It was off!!!) Orleans should probably mine, not irrigate its second grass land to get it to +5 food as well. Chartres temple -> rax. We have four workers standing on a forest – I’ll go ahead and cut it down, but there are MUCH more important tasks for them to be doing. Besancon was working a 2 food tile when it had a 2 food + 1 shield tile to work. Settler is heading for Dark Savant’s green dot. Both Chartres and Marseilles switch to barracks in preparation for military buildup. Those four workers weren’t standing on the forest – they were on GOTO orders! That’s against the rules for SG’s, for future note.

Turn 1 – 1375 BC – Orleans completes worker – starting on warrior for MP duty while it grows. Those workers split up, one is moving to improve Tours, one towards Lyons, one towards Paris, and one

Turn 2 – 1350 BC – Workers better distributed now, improving tiles that cities are working or will work soon.

Turn 3 – 1325 BC - By the way, I’m keeping Paris on Settlers. I think we need to grab the land rather than going for a wonder. Avignon switches from settler to a warrior to set up a blockade in our territory to seal off the western peninsula.

Turn 4 – 1300 BC – Rouen founded on green dot. Starts warrior.

BT – Settler complete in Paris. Settler started. This one will go for ivory. Tech pace is unchanged – Mongols still up wheel.

Turn 5 – 1275 BC – Barricade complete.

Turn 6 – 1250 BC - Rheims would require 20% more luxes to keep it happy before it’s MP completes next turn, so for one turn it runs a 3 beaker scientist, cutting off a turn on Lit. This is important – these super scientists will have the most impact in the Ancient age.

Turn 7 – 1225 BC – Rheims completes its 2nd MP, allowing me to drop luxes 20%! Starts building warrior.

Turn 8 – 1200 BC – Marseilles completes its barracks, starts on archers. Lit due next turn, but I can’t lower science rate.

BT – Uh oh – Mongols are connecting iron!! Lit discovered – change research to map making. Tours completes barracks. Starting archers. Workers mine one of the wheat tiles – Orleans is now at +5 food and should be a worker producer.

Turn 9 - 1175 BC – Map making will take 18 turns a 0gpt. Ugh, that’s a long time. We should kick out a worker from Rhiems soon – it’s causing us to have luxes pretty high.

Turn 10 – 1150 BC – Paris completes Settler. Starts settler. Lyons completes a temple. Starts a barracks. Rheims completes worker, starts archer, allows us to lower lux tax.

Notes to next player – I think things are going smoothly. Paris can keep spitting out settler nonstop. You should soon have enough vet archers to take the iron by force, after which the Mongol problem becomes academic. Have fun!

The Save

Important Rules:

Looks like we have some new players in ths SG, so I should make some rules clear. I know that most of you know these rules, but I should've made them explicit from the get-go.

No automation of workers or go-to orders
Wait at end of turn must be on

Both of these rules are out of courtesy to the other players. I don't mean to be harsh - we all had to learn these rules at one time or another. IT's also important to micromanage at this stage in the game, but it's not really a rule...

Current Roster:
Dark Savant - Up!
Puzzlinon - On deck
TedJackson
Jmansell - Skipped due to computer failure
Lord_all_Mighty -
Snaproll - Just Played

Out of curiosity I downloaded my 1750BC save and checked the prefs. Wait at end of turn is checked.

It's possible that there is some anomaly between 1.21 versions, I'm using the UK version. However, I haven't come across this problem in other SGs.

Perhaps others could check the save and see if the prefs are OK.

Solid turn there snaproll :goodjob:

regards

Ted

I have the UK version and so does Ted, I think. Why do you ask?

Ted thought maybe the problems with the "always wait at end of turn" might have something to do with the UK/US version. Just trying to track that down.
