Star Wars Mod

I know there is a way to convert models from the game "Knights of the Old Republic" to a format that can be imported in 3DStudioMAX/GMAX with the use of the "KOTOR tool". I understand there is a plugin with which you can then export it to a model for civ4. This would give you access to a lot of aliens, droids, ships, objects, etc. Not the same period as the movies but a lot looks almost the same.
I haven't read all the posts here (OMG 22 pages), so maybe it was already mentioned. I do not plan to help out on this one but this tip might be useful. Love Star Wars though, good luck and may the force be with you!
 
That's a great idea Effix. I have KOTOR I and II on my computer, so I have access to the models. Maybe someone else could convert them since I can't.

When I try to load this mod, I always get the error message "Failed to load CvEventInterface". This makes the menus disappear, making the mod not playable. What can I do in order to solve this problem?

Make sure there is nothing in your custom assets folder
 
If you could do it with KOTOR then I don't think it could be too much of a problem to do it with Empire at War as well, but then again I know next to nothing about stuff like that.

I don't see why you shouldn't, you just have to have the right tools.
- KOTOR Tool
- Model extractor (MDLOps)
- MAX .mdl import script

I myself only changed some textures (like turning master Vandaar green like he should have been), changing the models is a whole different ballgame. But I did get a model into GMAX or Milkshape (can't remember, I think you can load the .mdl in Milkshape, but that's just for viewing I think). You can get GMAX and MilkShape for free.

In general the steps are as follows:
-Open KOTOR Tool and find the desired model
-Export model
-Find skin/texture that goes with model, export to BMP
-Use model convertor to get .mdl
-Import into 3D program, I think if the BMP is in the right place the texture will show on the model right away, maybe you have to adjust the path to the BMP.
-Use export script to get a model for CIV4 (don't know anything about this, but I've read that there is something)

It might also be possible to do this with Blender, don't know...

It really is not that difficult if you just follow the steps. Just check it out and see how far you'll get... good luck

Rabbit-Alex: It's ok if you are not willing to spend some time exploring this, but I pointed out a possible way to do this without MAX (so for free, as in no money involved), investigate, or not...

So all the text entries say "in italian". Of course we can not blame him for not being as multitalented as Leonardo da Vinci.
Just open any XML file in the mod folder and take a look, you can open them with notepad, it is just text like in a .txt file, but with 'tags' like in HTML. You should see things like: (example from American Revolution mod)

I misunderstood you Effix. When you said that I need to import the model into my 3D program I assumed you meant 3DSMax. I'm gonna try it out now.
 
Does this mod change your whole Civ IV to be Star Wars or is it only when you want it to be that way?
 
Only when you want it to be. That's what mods do unless you specify in one of the configuration files that you want CivIV to always load the mod.
 
Alright people, I've been working on the organizing the tech tree, and I've done so. Thanks to J_Period, I was able to get the mod working again.

I took this tech tree from the .xls file zipped by Civmansam and added to this thread. It was originally by another user (forgive me for not mentioning your name, I don't know it).

This tree needs alot of work, however. To me, a significant portion of these techs, and their positions, do not make sense. For this reason I post it here so that we can get input from the Star Wars fans and know-it-alls as to which techs should be moved, which techs should go, and what should be added.

 
Shqype - what was your problem with the game crashing btw? I'm sure it will happen to others at some point.

edit - those are some wierd techs IMO, all over the place.
 
I just came up with an idea for the tech tree that I found rather interesting. Instead of making the Yuuzhan Vong techs useless so the non-Vong Civs, perhaps researching them could grant anti-Vong promotions, and vice versa.

How many techs are going to be in the mod? Using that number I could come up with names/placements for you:)
 
Hey guys, I found a cool Windows command line trick for anyone who has to convert large numbers of graphics files from one format to the other. I had to use it today to convert all my .PSDs into .DDSs that Civ4 can use. I finished making all of my buttons for the mod.

1. Go to Start -> Run
2. Type in "cmd"
3. type in "cd " + the directory path to the directory where you have all your graphics files
4. type "ren *.old_file_extension *.new_file_extension"
5. You just saved alot of time instead of renaming the files by hand.

The capital ship ones... yeah I tried to space them out by the ship's abilities but I know a lot of early units are left out.
