Star Wars: The Mod Strikes Back

Those look kinda too futuristic to be star wars - i thought sw units had a more weathered feel to them, rather than sparkly clean or whatever...
 
Yeah, those units don't look Star Warsy enough.

The ARC-170 is stronger than the Z-95, but the Z-95 was a cheap craft most militaries could get there hands on.

TIE Crawler way weaker than the AT-AT. My guess it was used post-ROTJ was that Empire was crumbling and lacked the resources to build the big expensive AT-ATs. I think TIE Advanced is stronger than the TIE Interceptor, it was just that the Advanced never was mass produced, probly too expensive. I took out a good chunk of the NJO and New Republic units, because the Rebels and Imperials would have more units than the Republic and Separatists giving them an edge. I don't mind if Geonosian Warrior is in Era 2, I was just trying something different. I still don't think we should have 4 lines of Starfighters.
 
One thing that's been bothering me lately is that we haven't figured out for sure if we're going to make Starfighters & Bombers either sea units or air units. Personally I think it could be done either way. Unfortunately we can't make it 100% accurate as the Civ3 engine won't allow us to do so.

Sea Units

Pros:
*Fighters and Bombers are able to directly attack larger ships.

*The ships are able to move freely through space.

Cons:
*Carriers are not possible as sea units can't load up into other sea units. Even if you check the Foot Unit flag on.

*Fighters and Bombers will only be able to bombard near coastlines. This isn't a problem with 1x1 or 2x2 planets, but it is on maps with larger planets and land masses.

*They can't move onto planets or land masses.


Air Units

Pros:
*Fighters and Bombers can load up into carriers.

*They can be used both on Planets and in Space.

Cons:
*The ******** civ3 engine takes away some of accuracy and fun of using fighters or bombers. As the AI won't move them if they have movement points and if any of your opponent's units occupies the same tile, the ship is automatically destroyed without battle.

*Have to be Immobile.

*Fighters and Bombers can only defend ships that are under siege through bombardment as they can't directly attack/defend from larger ships, but they still can defend from other fighters and bombers by using air superiority missions.


If anyone has any thing to say about this or any new ideas, please speak up.
 
I say the only air units in this mod should be the shuttles - so they can airdrop foot infantry. Mechs should only be able to be carried in bigger ships and not available for airdrop (not even by the imperial lander). This will give another reason to build infantry.

Starfighters should all remain as sea units - using a random example, B-Wings. B-wings are bombers, but to use them as such would be stupid, as they are also pretty able starfighters on their own. Thus keep all fighters as sea units, bombers given 4 square bombing radius or something... we can always change them to air units for scenarios.

My previous unit list has expanded a bit.... i can;t remember the full list, as it is on my other computer, but add Z-95 headhunter, MC-40 cruiser, and a load others....... X-Wing alliance is a great source for starships. Now all i need is someone to do a big heap of infantry (they scare me...all those moving parts).
I don't think i would have even started if it weren't for chris (i found where you got your b-wing model from) and no attack anims would be any good without bjornlo - thanks guys :D

Also have created new erasplash graphics, with better definition than the previous ones available..... will post all soon.

@ sheepmonster- well, to get around that we could make the Y-Wing upgrade to the K-Wing (more powerful, just lacking hyperdrive) and seeing as bombers would be air units it doesn't matter that the K-Wing had a hyperdrive or not. The B-Wing could be experimental, seeing as it was a "heavy assault starfighter" while the K and Y wings were effectively bombers.

I thought we would make the gunboats airdrop foot infantry and have the shuttles/cruisers be something like light transports/light starships.

So it looks like Starfighters for sure are going to be sea units, and Bombers maybe sea or air, probably more likely sea.

Who replaced SheepMonster with a unit maker taking on a bunch of units at once? :lol:

Speaking of unit making, I've really slowed down as of late, due to lack of time. I'm in the process of fixing several older units that were extracted from SW:GB, but I still have a long ways to go before finishing those. :sleep:

@SWC - Maybe I was wrong on those inbalances, I guess we'll find out for sure when we get to test this mod.

@Varlin - Those Imperial cities are ok.

Man, that's alot of units. Are you sure we can't just use some of the older graphics? The E-wing is awesome as-is. The attack is fine. So is the TIE Defender. I mean, this is alot of work for fine units. Your call, though.

wow- lots of units for u to work on- more than i could hope to make in a lifetime.

anyway-
Assault Frigate, Lancer Frigate, Interdictor Cruiser, and Golan Platforms 1,2,+3 aren't in the mod. If you really want to make them, the unit tree can be edited again to work them in.

Hmm . . (thinking) it'd be nice to have the Golan Platforms, but what use would they have- high bombardment or something? Is it possible to allow them to only stay next to planetary terrain as they were orbital defense platforms?

Where are your completed units?
 
Golan Platforms:I just use them as high defense / attack with 1 movement and sink if they leave coastal terrain
E-wing i plan to use the original graphics but make a new attack anim - wiht more star wars-like laser blasts. Otherwise i like the previous model.
Interdictor cruiser i made because it is used so often in expanded universe, and i also like the look of the ship itself.
Lancer frigate and assault friagte are in my unit tree, so i decided that i would make them, as i doubt anyone else will.
I haven't yet posted the completed units, due to several problems that came up. but here they are:
Z-95 is zipped up but also in a .rar file inside the zip, so it would fit as an attachment.

I dont want to interfear with this but would this be sorta waht you r looking 4 for the screen

there are some compresion artifacts that would disapeer at a larger scale

Its not bad..... but it could be made more interesting... am i the only one who thinks a space battle in the background would look good?

I was just glanceing through the forum and was hoping if someone could give me a few answers

1.what r u doing for a map? grphics/style

2. Is there a beta Version yet?

3. Why hasnt it been released yet it was suposed to hapen by april?

4. When should it be finished?

5. What can I do to help?
 
1. We will not be using a map, as this is a mod. I think.
2. Ya. Check out the website, and it's there for download.
3. Because most of the team left, or are no longer actively involved (Pleb, Tpasmall, jobiwan7 etc.) Only Chris85 and sheepmonster are still around. It's harder to finish a mod this size when only about 6 people are working on it.
4. My wish is to have it out by Christmas, :) (like that will ever happen, :lol: )
5. You can help us with pretty much anything. City Graphics, Units, techs, and anything you have to say about improving the mod, :).
BTW, Varlin Saliptor's working on a title screen (Hopefully something in space!)
 
k i might be able to work on some techs stuff but no promises.
