If you hate Terraria you might as well leave the thread now.

I can't wait for this to come out! It's supposed to be released in "early 2013", but I wouldn't be surprised if it were delayed, because the more excited I am about something, the more delayed it becomes.

Basically, it's a bit like Terraria... Except you have a spaceship (which can be upgraded with resources you find, and NPCs), and you can travel and land on infinite procedurally generated planets, with procedurally generated geophysics (gravity, weather, etc.), resources, and (if there are any) inhabitants or ruins. You can build stuff, explore, etc.

As an explorer gamer at heart, it's the sort of game I've been dreaming of, although my hopes were generally for 3D games, this will have to do for now. Hopefully it pulls it off.

It also can be played in multiplayer of course. Can't wait.

As someone with 160 hours in Terraria this looks amazing

Looks interesting - I got Terraria from a friend as a gift. He really wanted me to get into it so we could play some MP games..

In the end I ended up really getting into it and he didn't - he never even ended up playing it.. once! Figures.

I like a lot of the game dynamics in Terraria, but I hated how you needed to do googling/reading before you could figure out what to do "next" in the game. For the first couple weeks/months? I was just doing whatever the hell I wanted - exploring worlds, digging, crafting.. I got bored of this eventually and wasn't coming into contact with anything new in the game, so I decided to start googling. and.. there was a lot of crap I could have been doing but just had no idea about.

So, I hope this game is a bit more user friendly to those who are not fullblown fanboy addicts, which I will never be. I'm just too much of a casual gamer (most of the time) - I like esoteric games in that they are unique, but it would be nice if they made this one a bit more user friendly.

It's not the same guys making this, is it? Cause some of the screenshots look almost identical in terms of terrain/characters/etc.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it as well. Within three days of me buying the original Terraria (during last year's summer sale I believe), I already had 30 hours in it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the people "making" Terraria sort of stopped developing it and abandonned it. I think at least one of the Terraria artists got involved in Starbound, which explains the similarity in look, but the development isn't done by the same people. That's what I understood anyway.

Yes, the Terraria developers were kind of donkeyhats; they stopped production because the game wasn't making enough money anymore, I think it was. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't think it was the money as much as personal change of life interests combined with lowering money-making results maybe. Sometimes this happens, you don't like it anymore, you just stop. Their mistake was in not transferring the game to some other people properly so that it can get developed some more. But yes I do think some people from the Terraria team (namely art department I think) are in Starbound development.

Yeah, I'm not surprised. Terraria could have been a very good game, but it's like they stopped development right before the "polishing it up" stage. As such, it's very usable, but there is very little direction. It's basically still in sandbox mode, to a degree.

It still is a very good game - Red_Spy, Mechaerik, and I had a LOT of fun with hard mode and fighting the expanding Hallow/Corruption (at the time we stopped playing that world a bit more than half of the surface was covered in corruption) and we had a lot of fun trying to clean it up - with dynamite.

Oh it's very fun and I never even tried MP. There is just a total lack of direction for the player - it's more like a sandbox than a game in that sense.

It can be a bit difficult to know where you're going without using the internet, yeah - but once you know what to do, it's fine.

The corruptors that created new corruption with their ranged attack were worse.

And the exploding clowns.

You should probably infer that hard mode is quite difficult when hell becomes the safest place on the map.

We even made a house down there; we had all of our NPCs in hell, and we had rabbits that were spawning (and falling into lava). Our trees didn't grow, sadly.

Looking forward to this one, and enjoying the infrequent development blog, although not sure I'll be interested in playing it when it finally releases.

It does look pretty interesting. I'll definitely be keeping an eye out.

The concept sounds great, and the first screenshot was encouraging as an old-style Master of Orion-type interface shot.

Unfortunately I find the platform game graphics very offputting for this sort of game - a key to exploration games is that they have to feel like real universes to explore (it's one reason I get tired of EVE quickly, with its pretty graphics but implausible planet arrangements in solar systems - cold, barren worlds right next to the sun, ocean planets 12 AU out etc.) I doubt I could get into a game whose environment looks more likely to throw angry birds at me than anything else.

Seems I'm still waiting on Elite: Dangerous to fulfill my interstellar exploration needs...
