stGMNES2: The Middle Ages

you claim the title of Roman was givin to you by god- it was given to chalemagne of the franks, not the germans- you claim it as your mantle yes, but earned it you have not, for your nation often finds great contention with that of the Popes editcs, and more over are no longer of the same nation as that of the franks, whoare the ones who the title was bestowed to- to that end, currentlly the only power regocnizable to venice as Rome would be the holder of the Roman insignia(both eastern and western empire insignia), that of Byzantium

To: Venice

That particular title is inherited by bloodlines to us. Do you deny the power of bloodlines? Then you deny the whole structure of feudal Europe. But I dislike petty quibbling over a mere title. Do you say yes or no to the alliance?

This bickkering is useless, our common enemy is the Muslims!

being the republic that we are (yes, both in the NES, and historuically, Venice was a republic), Venice only looks down upon feudal europ, and its bloodlines- so yes, we fully deny the power of royal bloodlines (national heritages on the otherhand, are adifferent matter)

anyway, despite our disagreement over your kingdoms title, we agree to the allaince

Greatest City in the world, Constantinople...

Byzantium Story

The last place of Roman power, the city of Constantinople was only rivaled by Baghdad, Cordoba, and the far away city of Hanzhou. The streets were paved, the coffers rich, the people content. This was the true destination for the Byzantine Empire, to recapture the lands lost to the Arabs, not for power, wealth, or religon. But to bring back the days of glory... Long ago, when Constantine reunited the Roman Empire, and converted to Christianity, they held the Holy Lands, 2 crusades have already failed... The people were starting to despair, but rose to the throne, the Emperor Alexander, named for the ancient conqueror that conquered the known world. Constantinople will rise again!

To the west, rumours rise of several powerful nomads rising star, they too must be defeated for the Empire to regain it's former power... And another power, the Mongols, they're called, have conquered an great Empire in Qin(China) and everything in their path using superior tactics to anyknown to Europe, in far away Venice and Aachen, disagreements, were starting to blossom...

In the Empire, not all was going as well as planned, the Empire was huge with insufficent numbers to defend all of it. These problems will be solved directly, the army will be increased, the economy strengthened, and the church of Constantinople will once again ring from Asia Minor, to Egypt. One of the problems that plague the Emperor is religon, should the Empire allow freedom of worship? That was just another thing, the Emperor will decide...

VENICE

flag.gif

The Great Flag, and national symbol of Venice, the winged Lion

It was barbarians who caused it all. The Foundation of venice, the fall of the western Roman empire, the decline of the eastern bastion of Roman rule, Byzantium.

Venice was tied to Rome at the hip, once a valued Possesion of the Byzantine empire, venice had gradualy broke away, grante dindipendence on the condition that it help Protect Byzantine domains in the west, yet all the Byzantium possesd in the west was held in the south, and soon those were to pass directlly to Venitian control- a smart mose considering the byzantine empire only attracted the wanderings of many barbarian peoples who wished to posses its wealth, and so far flung from Byzantium main woories, therew as little that old empire coudl do to protect its claims there- but if it passed to venice- it would be in the hands of a firm ally, able to defend that land agaisnt the barbarians, and perhaps claim some glory of Rome for itself...

yes, the old Glory of Rome- it had becoem a driving force for venice, to help rekindle the ancient light in these dark times of glory now passed- Vneice was a stuanch ally of Byzantium, th eonly empire who had a true claim to the mantle of ancient Rome, and was friendlly to the barbarian claimant of the title of Rome as well- though venice itself wanted to be recognized as a newlly born continuation of anceint Rome as well- venice was well on its way, what with the foundation of its republic in 737- and it the current date being 1200, the venitian republic had alredy been around for over 400 years...

Th epeople of venice felt it had a detiny- a destiny to to remake what had long passed in the west, and to help rekindle it in the east- venice was a city like no other, with streets baved not of stone or brick, but of water, in a time of kings, and monarchies, venice alone was a bastion of form of government long past else where, the lone republic in the world, it was a land of shrewed merchants and diplomats, of strong naives and strong spirits- and none that would stand in the was of the new found determination of the Venitian republic would stand in its way- for like the Roman republic of old- Venice had a destiny.

it should, all things considered :p

The Holy Roman Empire. Giant of Northern Europe. Surpassing all except perhaps France in
size or power. Inheritors of the mantle of Charlemagne. Of all the leaders in Europe, only the
Pope and the Byzantine Emperor had more power, more might. The Empire had stood off attacks
from everyone who dared to attack it, had conquered more land than it had begun with. It had no
glory to restore. Its glory was here and now.

There remained troublesome thorns in the side of the Emperor. Poland, France, the Norse, the
Pope, and, of course, the nobles. Irritations, no more. For the Empire would dominate Europe. It
must. For it had the highest population, the highest area, the greatest titles, everything necessary.

Emperor Frederick was implementing a new trading system, with the tariffs lowered, which,
oddly, increased tariff income, as people were more eager to trade. Odd ways, the medieval
system worked. But it did work (Though slowly, as the system would not com into effect soon).
It all worked to his advantage... Or did it?
