"And to think we can't even be sure this'll work" murmured Dr. Watts to himself, unfortunately just loud enough for Dr. Ortega to hear. His response was acidic "It'll work if you shut up and finish getting those damn cables in."
They had been at it for months. The system had in fact been in pretty decent shape other than the hundred and seventy years or so of grit and fallout that had settled into its depths. Decontamination had required work in temperatures soaring up to a hundred and ten degrees in full radioactive hazard suits. Ortega had noted in his journal that he had lost twenty pounds. But it had been done, or at least they thought it had. Most of the work was just tuning up the equipment and gathering the necessary software. Due to fragmentation of the storage devices some of the code had to be rewritten but it seemed to work. Now they just needed to finish putting it all together, and they were just on the precipice of that.
"Are those damn cables connected yet?!" snapped Ortega. He was clearly irritated. The work had taken two months more than he had anticipated, though it would have only been a week if his team were working full time rather than being spread across three projects. "Last cable just went in" responded Dr. Armitage, pushing himself up from behind an antique terminal. "Lets fire it up and see if it works then. Everybody gather 'round! And don't bother phoning the uniforms down in the main control room, they'll know soon enough if we find anything."
The five man team coalesced around the terminal they had rigged up to coordinate software with hardware. They knew if nothing else they should at least be able to obtain local radar information, assuming every other connected piece of equipment had been destroyed. But odds were good it hadn't. "Lets see what's out there," stated Ortega, before keying in the initiation sequence...

Hey Gelion, if I have the cash for an uzi after buying a car we'll spring for it. Might be useful in the heist.
And I'll have it at auto all the time of course, no point in single shot. That way we can take care of guards with too many hit points real quickly.
Nothing to worry about mr. Imperium, it's not inside your territory.

The police officer reached for the hip holster but before he was able to draw arms his upper torso was disconnected with a spray of gore and landed with a sickening thud behind him. The robber had emptied half a clip into him.
"WHO WANT SUMZ OF THIS! HUH!" Two of his men proffered leather bags to the terrified clerks they were aiming their guns at while a few others were covering the exit and patrons. The bags were quickly filled with money and stuffed back out from behind the tellers.
"KAY! LET'S GO GUYS!" *click ca-crotch*
"And no witnesses!" *flump* The lead man deposited a hand grenade into the bank proper while the other men blazed away at the customers and the twitching body of the police-man.
"WOoooohOOOOOOOO!"
The men ran out into the rainy afternoon just as a powerful truck skidded to a halt in front of the establishment and the men poured in, one of them jumped onto the back and steadied a tripod to gun down or spray suppressive fire meant to kill (i.e. lethal fire) at anyone who might rush to the scene as the truck picked up speed and slamming the third gear made for a quick exit from New Reno.
"This was great!!! C'mon Harry, change of plans! Southeast to dodge the tracks so we can make with the innocence and then back to the Imperium by the route."
"Got it boss!"
If they could avoid being caught up with they would most likely succeed. Everything had been planned out, but would the cosy little film-makers have competent law enforcement with the equipment and minds to track a bunch of mad-max bandits across the wastelands?

Although the precise nature of the research this facility will be conducting remains a closely guarded secret, unnamed sources state "we do believe this facility will result in advancements which will assist in surface reclamation and the growth of liberal democracy and security across the wastes."
Given what was shown during the tour of the facility, the sheer size of this new complex indicates that whatever its intended purpose, the government is taking this project very seriously. During our tour we were informed that construction was receiving vigorous funding and its completion was estimated to conclude by the end of the year, an astonishing feat given its cavernous dimensions. Sources inside the government say that cooperation with settlements recently inducted into INVICTUS and the resulting economic benefits greatly accelerated the construction process. Just one more example of how together, people and government can help each other.

The President and Congress of INVICTUS have today announced the creation of the Civil Defense, a civilian arm of local town government whose explicit purpose is cooperation with the INVICTUS military, notably the Army, in the establishment and order of towns and cities. To quote Maj. Gen. George Hammond, one of the senior military commanders responsible for the promotion of this idea: "Although the bulk of any defensive duty will of course be carried out by trained soldiers, it's important to note that each fighting man in the field requires ten-fold as many people operating to support that single fighting soldier. As a result, it seems prudent that individual communities contribute to helping the garrisons which keep them secure. In addition, this serves to build a common bond between our fighting men and women and the people they serve and protect, and allows for the promotion of understanding between both civilians and military personnel."
Establishment of local Civil Defense volunteer forces in most major settlements is expected to begin over the next week with existing INVICTUS recruiting offices taking additional time to seek applicants who wish to join Civil Defense and help their communites become safer.
