stJNES5.2: From the Beginning
Update 13, 1300 B.C.E.

The cold, almost silent, waves smacked against the bows of the Malta, an Antigotian War Galley destined for the island of Cyprus, the most distant island in the Antigotian realm. The island is expected to house the most beautiful women, and is thought as a vacation resort to many Antigotians in the west.

But that astounding ship and its fantasy destination were to never be heard from again. As the ship sailed along its route, a black spec in the horizon grew larger and larger, until it actually became the horizon. A huge flotilla, a combination of Spartan and Lydian ships, soon intercepted the poor galley, and sent it to the bottom of the sea.

The Aegean fleet, a product of the new Aegean League, an alliance between Lydia and Sparta, decided to intervene in the conflict, and support their ally, the Carthaginians.

A message was soon sent to all nearby Antigotian vessels. They were to meet at the island of Cyprus, and destroy the threat sailing towards them. A small fleet of 40 ships soon gathered at the small island, and sailed to their dooms against the 300-strong Aegean fleet. The battle was quick, yet decisive. The Antigotians, while drastically outnumbered, sailed better ships, and were in themselves, better sailors, but could not defeat the huge mass. After inflicting some casualties, they too joined their brethren at the bottom.

The Aegeans landed in the port city of Sardis and marched eastward to meet the Antigotian army. At the same time, the Assyrians gave their final push, and the three armies clashed. The Antigotians were no match for the overwhelming odds, being pressed by one side a raving patriotic and religious army of Assyrians, and on the other by professional Spartan Phalanxes, some of the best fighters in the world. The Battle of Desert Run, as it would soon become known, was over in three days. The Antigotian army was slaughtered.

After the victory at Desert Run, the Assyrians pushed into Judea, where the Jews welcomed the victors, and continued down into the Sinai. This was after, of course, the liberation of Nabatia.

Antigot: -10000 Faalim, -2000 Archers, -500 Horsemen, -4 Catapults
Sparta: - 4,000 Phalanx, -500 Archers, -400 Horsemen
Lydia: -500 Spearmen
Assyria: -10,000 Holy Warriors

Meanwhile, the Great Punic War rages on, with the Carthaginian army finally awakening and fighting back against the invading Antigotians. The Carthaginians, with a numerical superiority, march south along their most populated coast, liberating the locals under the banner of the new king, Hannibal. The Antigotians are pushed back here, out of Tunisia, east across the barren coastline, and the Carthaginians have even been able to liberate the large city of Tripoli.

But as their victory inspires the hearts and minds of the Carthaginian people, the Antigotians push further on other fronts. The army in Algeria continues west, although against strict Carthaginian forces, they still take ground and the valuable iron mines in the Atlas Mountains.

The small contingent of Antigotian forces in Cyrene also push forward, the horsemen are a great asset to the fast moving force. They already threaten the liberated Tripoli from the east.

All in all, the Antigotians have taken harsh losses, but in the end, they still remain slightly more powerful then they were the turn before, with the prosperous Cyrenic coast and the essential iron mines in the south.

Antigot: -3,500 Faalim, -50 Horsemen, -500 Archers
Carthage: -2,000 Swordsmen, -2,000 Spearmen, -1,000 Archers, -200 Numidian Horsemen

Not all of Antigotian history is blood an war. On the more peaceful side, the Antigotians have made great strides in exploration outside of the Mediterranean. Ships that have sailed further then any other ship before have discovered an archepilego of islands, far out in the middle of the sea. The Antigotian people believe it is the last vestige of land before the world ends.

Meanwhile, more exploration goes south, along the Fez coast and beyond, into the unknown desert coastlines of the Sahara. On their way, they come along a civilization that has long been lasting. Tindouf welcomes the Antigotians, and allows a small trading post to be established, to which the Antigotians will definitely profit immensely in the future.

The Muscovite army rallies under Prince Rurik, who has now been dubbed Rurik the Great, and in Tula, they begin their assault. It is a ruthless pathway to Moscow, the Muscovites burn their own villages, murder their own people, and destroy their own roads. Whole towns are siege and starved as the army of Rurik continues their advance to the capital. Small peasant armies rise to stop them, but are no match for the skill of the Rurik Riders, the most skilled mounted soldiers in the world.

But, the campaign is soon to come to a surprising early end. In the north, while most of Muscovy’s attention lie in its heartland, its empire becomes under attack. Finlandic armies, fully equipped and well prepared for war, cross the border in a charge and defeat the dozen or so men that Rurik left here to defend. Immediately he sends more soldiers to the front, but are too late to save the northern region, and instead, they retreat to the old forts of the German frontier. Meanwhile, the peasantry are able to funnel the Finlanders into the circle of forts, so to prevent the Finlanders from surrounding the forts.

So far, the Finlanders have been held at bay. But with such a powerful force, and with a lack of foot soldiers in the Muscovite army, it is unknown how long the divided country can stand at holding the horde of northerners.

Muscovy: -2,000 Archers, -500 Rurik Riders
Finland: -2,000 Spearmen, -2,000 Archers

In the battle for the Adriatic, the Dalmatians are thoroughly and soundly defeated by the Thracians for the last time. The day after the defeat, the King surrenders his country and army to the Thracians. Thrace has won the War of the Adriatic.

Meanwhile, the army then begins on a strict new diet of road building. Roads are built in the conquered province, and canals are constructed. The Thracians are bent on having the Dalmatians realize the culture of the Aegean.

The Buddhist king of Magadha, Gautama I, has much work ahead of him. While the majority of the country is Hindu, a Buddhist King leads it. Even though Gautama stresses religious freedom, it is rarely practiced, and the ruling Buddhist elite are usually extremely oppressive of the Hindu minority.

Meanwhile, Buddhist monks remain peaceful, and even try to fuse the two religions. This is all in vain though. For hundreds of years the Magadhan people have practiced their religion, and while many do in fact leave their faith for Buddhism, this just leaves the more committed, more faithful, people to practice Hindu. The fused religion, Hindubuddhism, does not catch on, and thus is not spread to the surrounding kingdoms as Guatama would have hoped.

But Buddhism is taken past the Magadhan border. Monks and missionaries travel far and wide, some even making it to Hittite, Sionist, and even Sparta. While the converts are small sects, sometimes only dozens in a country, it is a stream of Buddhists that may serve the purpose of the Magadhans in the future.

The King is not all based on religion. Gautama has decided to conquer the world. With an almost infinite amount of money, and a steady stream of soldiers, many do not doubt his power. Thus, the Magadhan army lashes out in three ways, invasion forces are sent to the west against the unfortified Persian border, south into the waiting jaws of the Dravidians, and east against the small, sparsely populated state of Burma.

In the west, General Rakushya, a Buddhist and long time friend of Gautama, commands an army of nearly seventeen thousand men, most Hindus, in the conquest of Persia.

The people, devout Zoroastrians, members of the oldest organized religion on the planet, have long held the ancient lands of Persia holy and sacred. The west, though, is sparsely populated, and lightly guarded since the Magadhans and Persian kings have always been peaceful and friendly. Gautama is the first to breech this sacred friendship, and have turned the peoples of Zoroastrianism and Buddhism into enemies of each other. Back to the war, Rakushya easily diverts the small garrison in the northern cities to the south, where he commences to take the trio of cities in the north, and eventually destroy the Persian guard.

King Darius, probably the last king of Persia, begins to mobilize his force. But because of inactivity for the last few centuries, the army is slow to move and mobilization is just barely completed by the time Rakushya reaches central Persia. The most Darius has done is cut trade with the Magadhans, but it matters little. The Magadhans never really caught on to the mercantile life.

Magadha: -500 Swordsmen
Persia: -1,000 Spearmen

Gautama himself leads an army of twenty thousand in the conquest of Dravidia, long thought to be a rebel province of Magadha, which only time could tell when it was brought under the rule of Patna. The army is mostly Buddhist, which is intentional as they fight a country who is now majority Hindu.

Dark strategy has played a role in this southern campaign. Ahead of the invasion force, small parties of Buddhists and merchants act as spies and the intelligence of the pending Magadhan force. When the invasion did come, the Magadhans were well learned in the ways in which the Dravidians would defend themselves, and so conformed to it. The invasion came by sea at first. Gautama landed with him men outside the Dravidian capital, and easily took the capital, capturing the royal family and a small army. Meanwhile, a land invasion came from the north, in which the Dravidians fought bravely against.

This is the bloodiest of all three campaigns. Both sides are intent on destroying the other, with the Dravidians having the moral edge. But edge or no edge, they are no match for the trained and obedient Magadhans, who continue to advance, despite heavy losses and supply risks.

Also, in light of her ally being attacked, Sinhala has declared war on Magadha.

Magadha: -3,000 Swordsmen, -5,000 Spearmen, -2,000 Archers, -1,000 Kaliyashans
Dravidia: -9,000 Swordsmen, -1,000 Archers

The eastern campaign has the least amount to talk about. The Burmese are little better then barbarians, an have little ability to resist. But what do resist, cause bloodshed, and makes passing through this heavily-wooded area difficult for the regular Magadhan.
-3,000 Swordsmen

Further west, bloodshed does not elude the people. Saba, engaged in a civil war that has seen no peace in hundreds of years, has been risen by a new religion, Aslama Lati. United under a new faith, the Sabanese on the mainland have managed to unite once again, against a common enemy.

But god or no god, the Sabanese are effected by the invasion of a stronger nation. The Arabians continue their advance, but in a merciful attempt to end the war, they have offered peace and current borders.

Saba is still a complete disaster. Many things need to be fixed before a planned senate election can take place peacefully.

Saba: -1,000 Spearmen
Arabia: -500 Swordsmen

In the mountain fortresses that are Helvetican cities, temples rise to the Antigotican Gods, some are the tallest structures in Europe. Meanwwhile, under the shadows of these tall temples, slave labor, from regular slaves, sionist slaves, and Teuton slaves, are put to work on the monumental road structure that serves the country.

Meanwhile, refugees from other wars of neighboring countries are allowed into Helvetia, and, as long as they are not Sionists or Teutons, are granted citizenship. A flood of immigrants from Dalmatia now occupies the southeastern portion of Helvetia, as do Gauls in the west.

Within the Teutonic regime, a coup occurs, replacing the old general with a new one, who has the lives of his troops in his mind other then his own pride. Peace is signed, and the Germans and Helvetians race into the new territory to claim their own land.

In the still, slumbering city of Saba, the businesses and homes belonging to the noble citizens of Saba were pitched in total, pitch-black night. Not a single candle was lit in the entirety of the city, that is except in the large, grandiose house belonging to High Prophet Calibah La'nalil.

The political, military, and religious leaders that met at the house had been discussing the issue of Arabia intently. Most of the membership accepting that they would fight tooth-and-nail for full control of the Holy Land (OCC: Saba).

Yet, there was the small minority that did not believe so, and whether it was a convicing argument or the influence of that minority (most of them were major religious and political leaders, even including the high prophet himself), the discussion went from the early break of day in the heavens, to the dark ominosity that now dominated the skies.

"Alilat does not wish for the destruction of our people and the loss of the Most Holy Lands (Saba proper or the four cities region), why risk all this just to gain some backland country and a handful of desolate port cities?" Stated Prophet Ali-Ablil the Ethiopian immediately after the midnight hour's break from discussion.

Though he raised a good points, Biltani, a great and charismatic orator whose speeches had been invaluable in quelling the rebellion in the four cities, raised a heretical, but better one.

"Does Alilat wish for us to break her own laws? For it seems not matter how much we debate it there is no getting around to it, her words no longer even concide with one another. Why must she contradict herself?"

Shocked at first, the unruly troupe was then outraged. The great throng before Biltani teared and clawed to rip the supposed heretic to shreds, but the high prophet raised his hand to stop this process. The people stood confounded. Had he not just soiled the name of Alilat? Tarnished her honor? Disrespected the holy scion herself?

Praying in the back of his mind about this matter, Calibah thought, "Why? Holy Goddess, I ask of you advice that we may lead your people with grace and under your careful correction."

"It is obvious that all of us have been worn out exceedingly much, so much that it has weakend our minds to the ministrations of 'Lah." Glancing at the terrified speaker. "Go to your rooms, friends, and we shall continue our talks tomorrow."

Relieved, the great mob of people each found his or her respective rooms. While directing his servants in cleaning up the mess created by the people, Calibah first heard a buzzing and then a painful sting came to his temples, and after, total and complete emptiness. People ran to his collapsed body, attempting fervently to revive him, but the mind of the Prophet were not in the earthly domain now, but in the dwelling place of Alilat.

Waking up, the Prophet found himself in a blank, brightly-lighted, white room. While in the shock out of his surroundings, he found the three-faced Goddess, each of her faces young, middle-aged, and old, respectively. Seeing the pure, unadulterated form of Her, he turned back in a sense of unworthiness.Manat had given him visions of things to come before, but a personal audience between him and her two other egos? A meeting with him and the desert trinity?

Seeing his guilt she told him this, all three faces speaking in unison, "Calibah, my child, turn around I have something brief, but utmost importance to say to you."

Darying not offend his god, he did a 180 in stance straight away, though not looking Holiness directly in her eyes.

"My child, I have seen how my people argue on my behalf, and it pleases me greatly, but I have seen how wicked the western cities and people are, they pay not their dues to me. So therefore, I have decided that their punishment will to never again join the covenant between my people and I. Let them be, and have the pagan Arabs have their way."

Then all went white again, and Calibah was lying on a bed, a sizeable crowd gathering around him to see what had happened. He then told those standing around him what Alilat the Holy had said to him, how he had seen heaven and the faces of the Holy One. He also told them what she had said.

The next day, perhaps mostly unhappily, the council sent an envoy to deliver this message to the Arabs:

To the Heathen country of Arabia
From Saba:

You may keep that land and its people, for the sins they have committed have exiled them from our covenant. Those who wish to come back to the Most Holy Lands shall be denied entry, we also ask that you keep your part in keeping back those that wish to enter. Other than that, the accursed place is Arabian land and soil, forever under Arabia's grasp. At least until another power comes and snatches it away.

Nice update, though I don't see why Hindubuddhism wouldn't work. Remember - the two are fairly compatible. One could both worship the gods AND seek enlightenment. I do believe it wasn't unlike it in OTL Buddhism? And this one is even more Hindu-like.

And what do you mean "not only based on religion"? Our planned world conquest is entirely based on religion - we intend to make all people of the world enlightened and peaceful, whether they like it or not! ;)

Also, we were friends with Persia? I was under impression I ignored it altogether until now. Anyway, great update.
