ROME
The triarii heavy infantry- the infallibel sign of the Roman army, ever vigillilent, never failing
*crunch*crunch*crunch*
the order march of heavy infantry filled the air- as the march of many feet upon fine stone roads wandered up the hills towards Rome- a sound that it had grown accustomed to- the constant trainign and exercise of its fine armed forces- the Triarii...
over the past few years the Triarii legionary had not only dominated the ranks- but had completelly userped any other type of heavy infantry in Romes army- it was infact the
only type of troop used by Rome- not that the Romans minded it- the wolrd was basedon heavy infantry- and the Triarii- or even anyother type of heavy infantry had never failed Rome, for th eonly time when Roman armies had been pushed back wer ein the beginning of Romes rise- when what comprised heavy then comprised absurdley light infantry now- a lesson Rome had not forgotten- ever since the Camillian reforms the army had been taking on a growing signifiancance in the Roman conscience- boys dremed of joining the legions, to go off to the distant corners of the world, wethe rit be on foot with the rela legions, or on the ships as a marine, gurding the trade vessals which connect Rome to the exoctic east of Egypt and the familliarity, and welcomness of Macedonia- and not only to travel- but to gainhonour fame, and spoils gurading Rome agaisnt the ravanous packs of barbarians- weak as they were, even in great numbers, they had never managed to out gusto Rome on the battle fueld, primarilly through military tact- the barbarians just werent a match for Roman martial prowess- however, Rome, despite always being the victor by a long margin- hardley ever suffering casualties in battle, and those that it did suffer were soon replaced with eager recruits, the generals had been observing- the conclusion they came to was simple- Rome needed a new arm of the military- the Triarii heavey infantry was supreb, never before had an enemy broken through the legions straight colums of well trianed infantry, but it was slow- it could take hours to finish up a battle agianst a barbarian amry that out number you by huge odds- nt hard to defeat mind you- Roman trianeg in stregth and tact made sure of that- but the simple numbers were what did it- so the generals had made thier idea, ad voiced it to each other, and set on to Rome to make th proposal- an expansion of the Roman military- but instead of Triarii- it would be a complmentary force- of light infantry- at first, the noble council, remmbering the historical records on what had happend saud no flat out- but the generals made it known what differences thier would be- the "light infantry" would actually be very well protected- almost as well as th triarii, but no greaves (shin plates),a lighter sheild, and a smaller chest and back plate to lighten th eload, so that they could run and manuver faster then the Triarii- in addition, in stead of being armed with the 9-12 foot spears of the triarii- they would be armed with many javlins to cast at the enemy- giving Roman a ranged compliement to its armed forces- not as long ranged as bow and aroow would offer- the javiln was assured to be far more effective then any bow or arrow-
The Triarii are the heavy infantry og the Roman army- the real legionaries of the legions, armed with a large spear, swoard, and dagger- and armoud with a breast and back plat, greives, a helmet, and large sheild, they are th perfect fighting machine for the medditerraenian basin
The new javlin men of the Roman army are stylised after the heavy infantry-while being called light infantry, to most other antions they are at least medium- armed with an array of javlins, a short sword and dagger- and amroud with with a lighter itallian style sheild of the same fashio of the triarii, a helmet, and a smaller brest plate (the lack grieves ot make them even more speedy) they are to compliemtn the already formidable Roman military machine
but not all of recent years were dedicatedto war, and preperation for it if the northern tribes eve rinvaded- no, Rome had been incomign with great prosperity- trade was floruishing and offical trade contacts with egypt with its exoctic good, and macedon with its fine raw materials, and both in demand of fine roman craftsman work was making the world seem liek a jollyerplace to be- if bigger then imagined, as opertunites for adventure seemed endless accross the great sea, but the real pride and joy of Rome was the ever nearing completion, the mightyest temple in all the world- the great temple to Jupiter- Rome was already a beutiful city- filled with graceful arches, mighty colomes, pristine white marbel, marve, lous stone street, and mighty walls, no merchant had ever claimed to have seen a greater city- and no forigne merchant even brought up the subject-
but the staute was astounding- to be mostlly open air, atop the the greta Capitoline hill in Rome, it was to over look the entire city- an dwhat more, th ebuilding was huge- the great coloums were nearlly 5 stories high, and only around halfway to being completed- there was no need to worry about a roof- most of the great santuary was to be open air, except where the sotires tall statue of Jupiter himself was to be- it was to be covered by a great arch arc and hal dome, and the staue was to be made of Ivory importand from egypt, gold from mines both in italy, and form gold got in trade to macedon, and of native fine Itallian marble- even if Rome was not already greatest city in the world, at least in terms of beauty, this monument would assure it forever.
in terms of poltics, thing were going smoothlly- the bariabrian tribes had stopped trade with Rome- but that hardley effect rome- but did to its Etruscan brethren- the council was considering offering yet again an extension of combing the two nations, and on terms favoribel to Etrusca as well...
the peopkes of the sea wer emysterious, they still ocupied italy, but what was Rome to do, at the moment at least, it had not the sea capiblites, and besides- despite occupying italy, they seemd peaceful enough... though many in Rome still felt thier presence was unwanted... to say the least...
Rome relation with macedon and and egypt were, as they always were great, and therew as an erver incresing demand for Roman artistic crafts- primarilly stautues- and some agricultural products - wine to egypt, and wheat and other foodstuffs to macedon
and in domestic poltics- the trend for the great poltician general contending for the now completelyl cerimonial title of "King" contiuned, ever prompting them to win victories in battle to increse thier popularity, and increse thier generalsip besides, and the council men still contiuned the trend of goign to the forums and baths and listneign to what the people had to say on issues, even though as nobles, and the government being an oligarchy they did not have to... who knows what reforms this might one day bring...
