stJNES9 - Changing Times

Darn. My nation was going to change radically in the next story, but I guess you can update this first. ;)

OOC: Oh well. I'm bored. ;)

Oh, his back. His aching back.... It hurt like nothing else. His spine throbbed painfully and the heart weakly tried to continue onward.

Juba awoke suddenly. His back hurt.

Curses, but it would always hurt. Ever since his life had been twisted irreparably. Ever since he had been injured so terribly... Of course, if he hadn’t received the injury, what would’ve happened? He would never have risen above the status of a common warrior. That was high, but he would never have become chief. Have become king.

First of Germa, then of the entire Garamantes civilization.

With a start, he realized he was dying. It was not unexpected. He had thought he would die, long ago. But now? It’s not fair. It’s just not fair.

He tried feebly to call out. Nothing. His fingers began to go numb. His heart rate slowed.

He was a young boy again, loosing an arrow to down an antelope. He saw a glorious sunrise. His encampment sprawled before him, timelessly going onward. The trees burst into leaf, highlighting a huge grove around the wadi. The rivers were streaks of green across the plains.

A thousand memories flew by. Of his wife. His dear and beloved wife. Dead so long ago from the influence of the moon that had killed her.

Of the building of Germa. Into a real city. It was stone. Stone, like so few others had come to be.

His succession to rulership. Countless raids, then conquering campaigns. An empire ever growing. Attempts to breed the horses of the plains. The year when the lake nearly dried up.

A woman appeared by his side, and this was no dream. His daughter.

“Father.”

Louder this time.

“Father.”

“My girl,” he looked directly into her eyes. “I want you to be the heir.”

“What!?”

“You will be the heir. You are the smartest, the wisest, the bravest of all my children. Let it be known...” His voice grew fainter, “...That succession will not be determined by gender, but by ability. This goes for the whole empire. And if any should doubt you, let it be known that you swear this upon your father’s honor. And you can take...” he gasped for breath, “my seal. Take it! The other thing you should know... Is that... You must... Pledge to... Extend my kingdom unto the ends of the earth. Try to hook up the horses to the carts. Tell our great minds to think on that. Use these for war. Use your knowledge, your strength, your skills.

“Make it so that the sun never sets on the empire of the Garamantes. Make it so that no one forgets our nation.

“Make an empire to last the tests of time.”

@North king- evne fi the sahara is lush now (I htough it was essentially desertified by about 4,000 BCE), wont your naiton still undergo teh ravages of future desertifcation?

Yes, Xen. I am setting myself up to be slaughtered. ;)

I can stem the tide, I'm sure, somehow. The steady transition to desert people is all planned out. Or nearly so. ;) .

It was not truly desertified until 1000, IIRC.

Besides, I like the challenge of a dying empire. ;)

*ahem8 "dyeing", and "dead at birth" are two different things ;)

but all luck to you, and your merry band of desert gypsie nomads!

stJNES9 – Changing Times

Update I

Numerous tribes around the world have fought their way to become the powers of their regions. Uniting their people, the tribes have set up capital cities in which they have deposited all their power into. Well the cities forever stand as a testament to time itself? Or will they crumble under the inexhaustible weight of history? It is up to you to decide the fate of millions. Welcome to stJNES9: Changing Times.

---

Within the midst of high peaks and fertile valleys dwell the people of the Yamato tribe, isolated upon the island. They are Japanese. However, they are not the only Japanese, as there are many different tribes and Yamato is but one example of them. To the north reside first Chubu tribe, and then the Kingdom of Tohoku. Then to the south there is the weaker Republic of Kyushu. The problem lies only in the fact that in order to expand, Yamato would need a strong army.

---

The people of the island of Ceylon have fought for countless generations, the first wars dating back to the armies of Gods fighting for celestial existence. However, it was soon time that a superior people should rise to dominance. The people of the tribe Sri Lanka did not waste time when had the chance, and soon conquered the tribes of the island and have created a political Empire based upon the God who is supreme King. The people of the defeated tribes were expelled from the island to the mainland, where they themselves have formed an empire of the Sinhalese.

---

A completely forested nation, actually a dominion, is formed in the heart of the northern jungles of South America. The aggressive Trikk people have conquered their surrounding neighbors, and have created a strict hierarchy within the social order. Because of the aggressive nature of the Dominion, most of the surrounding tribes are hostile and ready to attack the Dominion at any chance they get. On the other hand, the extensive use of slave labor has led to an economically-prosperous nation.

---

The Siamese construct the magnificent city of Bangkok as a way to guard and live around the precious grain that is extracted from the limited fertile land surrounding the city. It is the first major city in the world, and is completely made of stone and wood. However, two other kingdoms arise to challenge the might that is Bangkok: the Mekong to the east and the Thai in the north.

---

The Prussians rise amidst heavy competition for the resources of the land. Highly unified and disciplined, the Prussian army has triumphed, despite the odds, against the Germans who vie for power in the region. However, other peoples rise around, such as the Bavarians, Austrians, and the Slavs who establish a kingdom of Slavia in the northeast.

---

Amidst the soft grass and flat lands of the Saharan savannahs rise the hunting peoples of Garamantes. These people are superb at what they do: run and chase the thousands of antelope that graze the lands. As a result, the swift warriors are the quickest in the land, and most skilled with bows then any other peoples in Africa. The people readily trade excess antelope meet and the horns to the northern Libyans of Tripoli, striking up a friendly relationship with the traders of the north.

---

The Sumerians rise in the Fertile Crescent, as well as the Djibouti on the small strip of fertile land running parallel with the Persian Gulf coast. All this in response is to the rising power of the Persians of Persipolis. However, a growing power in the north threatens the balance of power in the Middle East; the King of Medes grows in power unparalleled to anybody else.

---

The Georgians, not necessarily known for their military power, are quite the builders. The people have already built the arch, dome, and aqueducts in their mountainous home, and built magnificent cities rivaled by no one but the Siamese. However, the barbarous Scythians in the north threaten to ruin all that the Georgians have accomplished.

---

Along the silent shores of the lazy coast of the Pacific Northwest, the people of Salish Coast arise through their power of influence with the religion of the natural world. To the north, the mighty armies of the Chinook dominate, and the south the pacifist, trading-oriented Clatsop launch trade convoys to both of its northern neighbors, and reaps the benefits of shell-fur trade.

---

The city of Gold in which the Palenque occupies is among the most beautiful cities in the world, but stresses little architectural intellect, and so is regarded as substandard compared to those of Siam and Georgia. However, that is not to say that its beauty is any less prominent, or its influence any less strong. Most of the Palenque regard the other nations, the Aztecs and the Toltecs as subhuman, and though they are tough builders, they are even tougher warriors.

---

The Seminole are among the most powerful North American tribes, as they are situated among fertile lands and trade routes between the Cherokee of the north and the tribes of the Caribbean in the south. However, the country is politically unstable, as the different tribes that make up the nation are all powerful, and hold much influence.

---

The Romans are technologically behind most of the civilizations of the east, but are known for their ruthlessness in battle, and have proven this by destroying the antique civilization of the Etruscans and enslaving most of the men, while slaughtering the women and children.

---

The three Chinese dynasties arise in Asia, both of equal strength and both faced with problems. The Chin Dynasty of the north is constantly threatened by northern steppe barbarians, the Ming Dynasty of the east is ravaged by pirate raiders, and the Qin Dynasty of the west is constantly going through severe droughts.

---

Escaping the harsh realities of life in the Middle East, the Akkadians have escaped to the sea and sought refuge elsewhere, away from wars and strife. Finally they came upon the mouth of a river, in which they decided to stress their cultural value and built a city right on top of the water, symbolizing their connection to the sea. The Celtics that lived in the area soon gave them their name, Entira, or “People Who Come From Nowhere.” However, what the Entirans sought, peace and trade, soon became fiction as surrounding Celtic tribes began to war against the Entirans, and rival states emerged in the north.

---

The people of England originally established their kingdom as a defense from the Welsh raiders in the western slopes, but as it turned out the English were much more powerful then they once thought. Under the rule of King Henry, the English armies were led to triumph over the Welsh barbarians, and soon the English attention turned to the rumored Kingdom of the North.

---

The Thracians have a long and mystifying history intertwined with the battlegrounds of gods. The windswept forested lands are prime for the taking, and that the Thracians did, building the city of Bosporata, the first city in Europe. However, since the construction the city has hardly grown, and has become known as the old town of Europe. But the people live on, a simple, plain life that they are content with. After all, they did go through a lot, what with the supernatural battle of the cosmos going on over their heads.

---

Atlantis, City of the Sea, springs from the small island that is one of a chain that stretches across the Atlantic Ocean. The people, specialized sea farers, came from the flat fields of Iberia to the rugged landscape of the Azores. However, they were not united in their journey. Hundreds of small tribes made up the archipelago, it was only when Ferris the Brave become ruler of Atlantis was the chain united under one King…all but one island, which remained defiant to the laws of the City of the Sea.

---

A nation of horse riders develops a culture worthy of recognition on the plains, among the barbarians of the steppe. The Mongolians are true horsemen, doing everything but marrying a horse. Farming is quite fertile as well, but the Mongolians prefer meat, which they hunt for usually in the south where there are more herds.

---

The twin kingdoms of Israel and Mitanni arise on the Eastern Mediteranean coast, where both vie for the small amount of fertile land available here. Off the bat, these people are rivals, realizing that the land available has only enough resources for one major power, able to compete with the Egyptians and Spartan League. War may be on the horizon.

---

The Atlantic Northeast is quite packed with many different nations; the people of this world are constantly fighting and conquering. It was when the leaders of twelve tribes got together, and formed an alliance; the first blocks of Confederation were laid for the formation of the Iroquois. Now, Hodinoshone, as it is called, reigns as a loose confederation of Iroquois states.

---

Meanwhile, along the Chesapeake Bay, two more American peoples rise to dominance, and are quick rivals for who controls the trading hub of the Chesapeake Bay. The people whose name comes from the bay arise on the west shore, while the Pocomoke dominate the eastern shore.

OOC

I did not include North King’s last story in this, as I am trying to finish! This took me nearly 4 hours!

I dunno- the egyptians have always painted a fairlly harse picture of the sahara area, and they were around since 3000 BCE :p

That's OK, Jason. I don't mind. :) Though the strong neighbors provide an interesting challenge.

Yep, typical and yet brilliant jason. I have a question though, how come on the stats, it shows that the Japanese are in bronze, and most of the other nations dun have a age stat?

@jason

where the hell did the name ferris come from? (preferbaly, i'd liek to jkeep the same greco-roman-minoan theme of culture that the Atlantian legend has, for future reference)

also, if ne island in sidipendent of Atlantis, then what is its name? the entire are alooks to be under my control

You make up the name, xen, lol. I left it wide open for why the island is not under your rule.

alex, its because i started out puting ages, but then i forgot towards the end cus of so many distractions. Everyone is in bronze.

OCC: Darnit! I didn't finish the story I was hoping too post before the update. I'll post it anyway. :(

By the way, next update should be Thursday or Friday. If I have suffecient orders, possibly even tomorrow.

Also, don't expect updates like this, where each nation is recognized. This was just the first and special update. Normally it will have anything in it that is worth being recognized.

OCC: Kudos to North King for his help in this story ;)

The honor of battle can never be ignored, yet these honors do not feed the hungry. Hungry people do not make good warriors, nor do they make good farmers. The Yamato regions rains give the warriors there plenty of food, and that in itself makes the Yamato region a vauble provience to hold for both Chiefs and Kings.

The dead on the field were innumerable. The stench, intolerable. The circling ravens above did nothing to help the despicable sight. Out of all the bodies laying on the field, one body on the field was not yet dead. Piles of bodies layered the field. A single raven swooped down, landing on a particular body on the middle of the field. The body seemed to wobble, almost as if controlled by puppet strings. The body began from side to side, until the body fell off the pile it was part of. Kimmei had finally kicked his way out.

Kimmei was free from the prison of the dead. He was free from the pickings of the carrion birds. Free to return and lead his people. He looked quickly around the place of his burial. Finding his bow, Kimmei ran off the battlefield, like the ghost his people believed him to be.

Running through the rolling plains Kimmei thanked the Gods for his safe passing. His live was spared by their will, his life granted so that his people would be led to victory. Truely the Gods must be looking out for him, for his people.

Coming upon the dirt road that led into the city, Kimmei attempted to look somewhat presentable for his triumpant return. Walking slowly into the city, Kimmei was met with gasps, and men and women both ducking into their homes. 'Should they not be overjoyed at my return?' Kimmei thought. Catching sight of a man he recognized coming into the city, Kimmei called out to him, "Ryoushin, why do you all turn from your King?"

"King!" Ryoushin spat. "You betrayed us for the northern tribes. Akira told us all about it. Leave now, before I kill you myself." Kimmei was speechless. 'Akira did this?' he thought. 'There is no honor in this. No honor what-so ever.'

"Death will be his reward then," Kimmei spoke as he drew his bow. "Do you wish the same for you?" Ryoushin did not speak, but stared difiently at the wayward Warrior King. "You will live, for your knowleadge. But remember this, the Gods spared me once, they will not abandon me now."

Kimmei ran off, running away into the alleyways of the city. He disappeared into them, becoming one with the shadows. He ran like the hounds of hell had been loosed upon, and in a way, they had. Using his knowleadge of the city, he soon reached the palace walls. Slinging his bow upon his neck, Kimmei scaled the walls till he topled over into the courtyard garden. Akira, kneeling next to the peach blossom pond, looked up at the Warrior king, suprised. Knotching an arrow to his bow, Kimmei stared into Akira's eyes. "Betrayers never prosper." The bow twanged once, and only once.

Updated the military list on the first page.

btw, stalin, I didnt accept orders for the first turn...want me to just keep the ones you sent for this turn?

NAVY:
INFRASTRUCTURE: None

OOC: I choose a command economy, if that wasn't obvious from my government type.
Also, you never added training stats. And does a command economy mean we can grow it at will?

The Emperor stood on the hill and surveyed his people. Finally, the Empire, as was its God-given right, had conquered all of the holy island. Finally, the devilish Sinhalese had been expelled, fleeing in their devilish crafts which carried them over the water. Finally, his people were free.

But now he had come to a decision. The Empire would not simply stay on the Island. It would spread the holy faith. The true rulers of the universe would expand their dominion until it encompassed all, and all was holy.

"We shall build a great fleet. Greater than any the world has ever seen. And by learning the crafts of the enemy, we shall defeat them."

Orders
*secret*
-Spend 1 Credit on getting galleys (the Sri Lankan UU, The Emperor's Hand, which can carry more men per galley and have slits for fire arrows to be fired out of, but are bad at close combat)
-Start Project: Great Timber Camp. It will increase the economy because of the extra production (and taxes from it) and should also cause more ships/credit.
-With 3/8 of the navy, 500 infantry, 500 archers, and settlers, settle the islands to the southwest.
-With 3/8 of the navy, 500 infantry, 500 archers, and settlers, settle the islands to the east.
-Halve the taxes on the newly settled islands, in order to encourage settlement and growth.
-1000 infantry and 500 archers guard the capital, Colombo.
-The remaining 1/4 of the navy, with 300 archers in it, guards the straits between Sri Lanka and the peninsula, and if the Sinhalese navy invades, attempt to defeat them. Focus on the troop transports.
-The remaining 1000 infantry and 1200 archers defend the coastline. If the Sinhalese land, then the archers should fire volleys down upon the enemy on the beaches, then retreat as they approach. Have the infantry, with archers covering them, then engage the Sinhalese.
