The Ghost of SS
An outline of the hierarchy in the Church:
Arch Bishop (Chosen unanimously by all of the Bishops. Is the most direct link to Jeremia, although not the exclusive. Acts as conductor of ceremonies and rituals for inauguration and national festivals. The Arch Bishop sits for ten years.)
Bishops (Chosen locally by a council of monastic Masters. These have the function of nearly the same as the Arch Bishop. They each represent their region, and balance eachother. There are no limits to the number of Bishops. New regions are made as the religion spreads and Furria expands. Bishops sit for a period of ten years. After the fifth year, a new Arch Bishop is elected.)
Bishops elected - 5 years - Arch Bishop elected among the Bishops - 5 years - New Bishops elected and so on.
Monastic Masters (these are the headmasters and principals of the monasteries. Although they do not have much power by themselves, they are the only candidates for being Bishops in their region. When a new Bishop needs to be elected, they meet in a council and vote for one among their ranks. Monastic Masters may sit indifferently, as long as his health allows it, and as long as he wishes.)
Monastic Council of Twelve (Despite the majestic title, this is only a council of the twelve oldest scholars (priests/teachers) in the monastery. This council settles any matters concerning only the monastery and its immediate vicinity. The Council also manages the day-to-day activity of the monastery. Council members sit until they die or must resign. New ones are always the oldest scholar who is not yet in the Council.)
A special note must be taken to the warrior templars.
Warrior templars have their own hierarchy not based on monasteries, since they are often on the move. They are ranked as follows: Soldier, Sergeant, Major, Lieutenant, Commander and General. Any officer below Lieutenant are ranked below Monastic Masters. All above Lieutenant only answer to the Bishops. Lieutenants are in a kind of test phase to see if their are fit and worthy of a higher rank. Thusly, they are most often chosen for difficult tasks or as leaders of strike teams to prove their worth. Officers sit until they resign.
Note that Bishops and Monastic Masters can have offices outside their ordinary if the Bishops agree on it. Such duties are most often Emissaries or supervisor for special projects, or even as generals. The warrior templars are most often chosen for this, but more often are they accompanied by a scholar general to sort out diplomacy and give advice in strategy and planning...
