Drusus Ganjastonius, and the Invention of Reggae
Now, the Kingdom of Aquilon is a dandy little place, well respected, and to some extent, even liked by its neighbors. While the occasional border dispute dose, on occasion, result in conflicts in which the mighty Aquilon soldires rapidlly smack down with the proficincy of Titans, not all Aquilon is so martially disposed; no, that wouldnt be a very fare account of the damned randy little nation of Aquilon at all...
And while the general culture of the area tended to revolve around men bashing the hell out of each other in a warrior society, out little story dosetn concern them, or thier rather huge importance to the culture of the land;
chances are thier will be more then enough time for blood shed stories and the might of Aquillian armies later no our story centers on the wondery character of "Drusus Ganja Stonius", and his rather wonderful assortment of musical instruments, of all things.
It all started, as one might have actually suspected, with a small stint in the army; our dear Drusus served as an Archer upon the mighty pallisade that surrounded the capital; however, more important, for our current purposes at least, isnt what he achieved, but what he discovered; the "twangyness" of a pulled bowstring had long been known, and soem had even attempted to take advatage of it for musical purposes; though, for all intents and purposes, aside from a few rather bawdy soldire songs about strong wine, loose women, and some of the more decadent gods out in the world, all songs to be sung around a soldires camp fire, they had all failed.
But our dear Drusus; he wasnt quite satisified with the situation; he
knew there was more potential in the little stringed bow then what had been made for it thus far.
His big break, came when he was in the barracks, the he was strumming on a bow; not for its musical wuality, but to see how taught its string was, to see if it woudl be a worthy bow to bring on patrol with him on that day- moving along, he picked up another; and checked it, then another, and then another- and, as if the god of enlightenment gave him a firm kick to the back of the head, he had it!
One bow string made a particuler noise; somtimes other strings, of a different sized bow, or pulled to a different tightness, created a different sound! He soon sat to work, after every patrol, we worked to fashion the first of what woudl be his great legacy of musical instruments- his efforts soon payed off; after a week of craftsmanship, of hard tuneing, tweaking, testing, and fixing, he had the firs tof his amazing instruments;
the Mandolin
He was more then overjoyed at the delight people toomk from listenign to his new invention, and he was delighted to perform, but, very soon, he became... board, one might say, with his dear mandolinl sure he loved it, but he longed for different sounds, somthing deeper, and more... basic... experimentic with his dear strings a bit more, he very soon, surprisinglly soon, one might say, stumbled upon to what he called
"a bass" (for those who dont know, its pronounced, when tis reffering tot he instrument, as "base")
a wonderfully low pitched, and moody sounding piece of musical equipment, nortiorius for how much it made people want to go off and fornicate. An interesting after effect, thought Drusus, but he wasnt about to complain over it; soon finding a good friend of his, interest in accompanying him, they soon sat down and perfected thier sound, though, while awesome, and more then acrowd pleasure, they both realized thier was still a few things missing; yet another stringed isntrument, this time a bridge between the Base, and Mandolin- easilly contrsucted, from all his prior experience, Drusus called it a
"Guitar",
and it soon bacame amoung his favorites; his partnet, Flavius, an infantryman by profession, soon brought along the final peice of equipment; drum, and, more importantlly,
symbols; in a similer vein to Drusus finding out the musical qualties of bows, Flavius, tapping on some bronze sheilds one day, stumbled upon thier own qualties for musical purposes; attaching these to a set of several different types of drums, he, sensiblly enough named the entire appratus a
"drum set".
By this time, they had already searched thier own souls for what thier music woudl sound like, utilizing a base sound of, well, the bass, and being well supplimented byt he drums, guitar, and Mandolin, it s was an amazing, realxing, and addicitive little sound, well loved by the people of Aquilion, and the surrounding peoples- the realxing melodies were soon even further supplimented by the sound of the human voice, and the addictive power of the music truelly took off
